Extraordinary nonlinear transmission modulation in a doubly resonant acousto-optical structure

2017

International audience; Acousto-optical modulators usually rely on coherent diffraction of light by a moving acoustic wave, leading to bulky devices with a long interaction length. We propose a subwavelength acousto-optical structure that instead relies on a double resonance to achieve strong modulation at near-infrared wavelengths. A periodic array of metal ridges on a piezoelectric substrate defines cavities that create a resonant dip in the optical transmission spectrum. The ridges simultaneously support large flexural vibrations when resonantly excited by a radio-frequency signal, effectively deforming the cavities and leading to strongly nonlinear acousto-optical modulation. The nano-o…

Characterization of opal photonic hetero-crystals by light scattering

2006

Spectra of the light scattered in the heterogeneous photonic crystal based on the thin triple-film opal, which was prepared by successive, convective force-assisted crystallisation of colloidal suspensions containing spheres of 374, 474 and again 374 nm in diameter, have been studied in the wavelength range of low order photonic bandgaps. If the ballistic regime of light propagation is preserved, the forward scattered light becomes the subject of the diffraction attenuation, whereas the backscattered light experiences both the diffraction enhancement and attenuation. A variety of possible configurations of scattered light measurements have been examined and corresponding spectra of scattere…

Light Propagation in Heterogeneous Opal-Based Photonic Crystals

2006

Ballistic light propagation in the heterogeneous photonic crystals based on the thin triple-film opal have been studied in the wavelength range of low order photonic bandgaps. Since the scattered light experiences the diffraction attenuation, the spectra and the angle diagrams of the transmitted and forward scattered light have been used to identify the effect of heterostructuring.

<title>Mechanisms of holographic recording in amorphous semiconductor films</title>

1998

The mechanisms of holographic recording in (mainly chalcogenide) amorphous semiconductor films are reviewed including photoinduced structural changes, relaxational structural changes, recharging of localized states in the band gap, and photoinduced anisotropy. The holographic properties in these cases are compared. Different effects of hologram self-enhancement are also considered.© (1998) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. <title>Holographic recording in amorphous chalcogenide semiconductor photoresists</title>

1998

The properties and mechanism of relaxation processes of holographic gratings in amorphous chalcogenide semiconductor films have been studied. The possibilities of the practical applications of these materials as the photoresists for the production of the relief holograms and holographic optical elements are discussed. It is shown that the self- enhancement phenomenon of holographic recording in amorphous chalcogenide semiconductor films by light or thermal treatment can be used to increase the diffraction efficiency of the holograms.© (1998) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Enhanced diffraction of light in GaAs microcavities

1995

We theoretically analyze the diffraction of light by gratings that are photogenerated in Fabry–Perot microcavities. The coupled-wave theory of volume gratings is combined with appropriate boundary conditions to yield expressions for the diffraction efficiency. Multiple round trips within the cavity are seen to increase the effective grating thickness and therefore the efficiency. Numerical calculations specific to GaAs microcavities show that the diffraction efficiency can be enhanced by more than 2 orders of magnitude at the resonant wavelengths.

Preparation and Characterization of Tin Tungstate Thin Films

2015

Tin tungstate thin films were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering method and studied by x-ray diffraction, confocal microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. It is shown that the films are composed mainly of nanocrystalline α-SnWO4 phase. The possibility to use these films as write-once optical recording media is demonstrated.

Thermal conductivity of half-Heusler superlattices

2014

Thin films and superlattices (SLs) of TiNiSn and ZrHfNiSn layers have been grown by dc magnetron sputtering on MgO (100) substrates to reduce the thermal conductivity, aiming for improvement of the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT. The thermal conductivity of 1 Wm−1K−1 was measured by the differential 3ω method for an SL with a periodicity of 8.8 nm. In addition to x-ray diffraction analysis of the SL crystal structure, smooth interfaces were confirmed by scanning/transmission electron microscopy.

Acoustically tunable photonic band gap structures

2005

We discuss the formation of a tunable one-dimensional photonic band gap structure through the modulation of the resonance frequency of an optical microcavity by a surface acoustic wave (SAW). The microcavity consists of a λ/2 GaAs layer bounded by AlAs/GaAs Bragg mirrors. The SAW periodically modulates the optical thickness of the cavity layer, leading to a light dispersion relation folded within a mini-Brillouin zone (MBZ) defined by |k x |≤ π/λ SAW (k x denotes the photon wave vector component along the SAW propagation direction x-with-caret). In reflection and diffraction experiments, we observe photon modes bounding the gaps in the center and at the boundary of the MBZ as well as a reno…
