Co-simulation of bio-inspired multi-agent algorithms

2020

This paper reports on the co-simulation of a team of robots deployed in an exploration task, coordinated by a bio-inspired exploration algorithm. The co-simulation integrates the high-level exploration algorithm with detailed implementations of the robot controllers and kinematic models. Co-simulation results are used to find and correct mismatches between submodels.

RNA Transfer by Electroporation into Mature Dendritic Cells Leading to Reactivation of Effector-Memory Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes: A Quantitative Analys…

2005

Previous studies have analyzed transfer of RNA-encoded tumor-associated antigens (TAAs) into immature dendritic cells (DCs) because of their exceptional ability to internalize antigens. Concerns have been raised regarding the use of immature DCs in clinical studies because of their capacity to tolerize T cells. Therefore, we focused on optimizing RNA transfer into mature DCs using the method of electroporation and obtained high protein expression in 90% of mature DCs. Particular emphasis was placed on quantifying RNA transfer. Reconstitution of peptide-MHC (pMHC) ligands on RNA-pulsed DCs was measured with the help of effector-memory cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) specific for the melanoma-…

Meeting the Challenges of Generational Change in the Teaching Profession : Towards a European Model for Intergenerational Teacher Collaboration

2013

In a European-wide effort to improve the professional development of teachers, the 2AgePro project was conducted from November 2008 to October 2010. One of its goals was to develop and test different forms of intergenerational teacher collaboration among junior and senior teachers in primary and secondary schools. Another aim was to utilise the results from these pilots, which were conducted in the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden, to create a model for intergenerational collaboration that could be used in any national or cultural setting. This article reports on the national pilots and proposes a European model for intergenerational collaboration for teachers. …

An improved protocol for electroporation ofOenococcus oeniATCC BAA-1163 using ethanol as immediate membrane fluidizing agent

2008

Aims:  To finalize an effective and reproducible electroporation procedure to transform Oenococcus oeni ATCC BAA-1163 strain. Methods and Results:  The vector pGID052 was selected to optimize the electroporation procedure. Transformation efficiency was 5·8 × 103 per μg of DNA. Transformation was improved when competent cells were prepared with exponential phase cultures; optimum electroporation parameters were an electric pulse of 12·5 kV cm−1, under a resistance of 200 Ω and the presence of 10% (v/v) ethanol in the electroporation buffer (EPB). Conclusions:  An effective protocol to transform O. oeni ATCC BAA-1163 strain by electroporation has been obtained by addition of ethanol to the EP…

Heterotrophic microorganisms in deteriorated medieval wall paintings in southern Italian churches

2008

The Campania region in southern Italy is noted for its large number of churches that harbour invaluable frescoes, dated from the beginnings of the 4th up to the 13th century. The wall paintings represent an integral part of the monuments, and their deterioration constitutes a potentially significant loss for the world's cultural heritage. Heterotrophic microorganisms such as bacteria and mould can grow on the surface of paintings that contain a wide range of organic and inorganic constituents, and provide different ecological. niches that are exploited by a large variety of microbial. species. We isolated and identified the heterotrophic microorganisms found in the biodegraded medieval wall…

Vulnerability of a Damaged Bridge Abutment in a Seismic Area

2018

The case of the abutment of a motorway urban viaduct damaged by human intervention is presented. Built in the 1960s, it lies in a critical seismic area and the human-induced damage involved the elements of the abutment foundation. The structure is geometrically complex and the evaluations of its structural safety were carried out by applying Italian codes from different times: those concerning the time of construction, those of a recent past (1996), and those of the present (2008), inspired by Eurocodes. A comparison between the safety checks performed and the requirements of all these codes is presented and discussed, especially regarding safety coefficients after the damage was done. Two …

Interprofessional collaboration during an emergency ward’s rounds

2015

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore interprofessional collaboration during ward rounds on a Finnish emergency and infection ward from the viewpoint of three central professional groups: physicians, nurses and secretaries. Design/methodology/approach – The authors utilise an ethnographically informed approach, with observations and interviews as the data collection devices. The data comprise ten interviews with staff members and ten hours of observations. The data were analysed using qualitative thematic analysis. Findings – The ward rounds were found to be rather physician- and medicine-centred, and mostly not interprofessional. Nurses and secretaries in particular expressed …

Narrow-diameter implants: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

2018

OBJECTIVES Narrow-diameter implants (NDI) are claimed to be a reasonable alternative to bone augmentation procedures. The aim of this comprehensive literature review was to conduct a meta-analysis comparing the implant survival of NDI and standard diameter implants (SDI) and to provide recommendations and guidelines for application of NDI. MATERIAL AND METHODS An extensive systematic literature search was performed in the PubMed/MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library databases. NDI were classified into Category 1 (implant diameter <3.0 mm, "mini-implants"), Category 2 (implant diameter 3-3.25 mm) and Category 3 (implant diameters 3.3-3.5 mm). Clinical studies at all levels of evidence with at lea…

Optical calibration of a multispectral imaging system based on interference filters

2005

We present a new approach to optically calibrate a multispectral imaging system based on interference filters. Such a system typically suffers from some blurring of its channel images. Because the effectiveness of spectrum reconstruction depends heavily on the quality of the acquired channel images, and because this blurring negatively affects them, a method for deblurring and denoising them is required. The blur is modeled as a uniform intensity distribution within a circular disk. It allows us to characterize, quantitatively, the degradation for each channel image. In terms of global reduction of the blur, it consists of the choice of the best channel for the focus adjustment according to…
