Not Entirely Reliable: Private Scientific Organizations and Risk Regulation – The Case of Electromagnetic Fields

2013

Private scientific organizations exert a great deal of influence in the regulation of some technological risks. The high level of expertise of their members is arguably a good reason for them to participate in making and monitoring risk regulations, in order to adjust these to scientific progress. Nevertheless, there are also sound reasons why governments shouldn’t uncritically follow the views expressed by such organizations. Taking the role played by the International Commission on Non–Ionizing Radiation Protection in the regulation of electromagnetic fields as an illustrative example, this paper shows that private scientific organizations such as these are structurally less well suited t…

MUNICIPAL FINANCE EQUALIZATION PROCESS IN LATVIA

2012

The municipal finance equalization calculations in Latvia presently take into account the demographic indicators, but they do not depict accurately the municipal finance requirements; in order to precisely determine these numbers, other consequential criteria should be accounted for as well, such as infrastructure or other aspects characterising the peculiarities or needs of a certain territory. Inclusion of these new criteria in the process of determining the need for financing could serve as the basis for improvements to the existing system. The purpose of this article is to analyze the municipal finance situation in Latvia, starting with 1998, to show the differences in their income and …

Initial Enlargement in a Markov chain market model

2011

Enlargement of filtrations is a classical topic in the general theory of stochastic processes. This theory has been applied to stochastic finance in order to analyze models with insider information. In this paper we study initial enlargement in a Markov chain market model, introduced by Norberg. In the enlarged filtration, several things can happen: some of the jumps times can be accessible or predictable, but in the original filtration all the jumps times are totally inaccessible. But even if the jumps times change to accessible or predictable, the insider does not necessarily have arbitrage possibilities.

Combining Benford's Law and machine learning to detect money laundering. An actual Spanish court case.

2017

Abstract Objectives This paper is based on the analysis of the database of operations from a macro-case on money laundering orchestrated between a core company and a group of its suppliers, 26 of which had already been identified by the police as fraudulent companies. In the face of a well-founded suspicion that more companies have perpetrated criminal acts and in order to make better use of what are very limited police resources, we aim to construct a tool to detect money laundering criminals. Methods We combine Benford’s Law and machine learning algorithms (logistic regression, decision trees, neural networks, and random forests) to find patterns of money laundering criminals in the conte…

Family Structure and Subjective Economic Well-Being: Some New Evidence

2013

The paper investigates the main socio-demographic and economic determinants of subjective economic well-being in different typologies of households. Previous studies have used dummy variables to explore the effect of family structure. In this paper, however four different models—one for each family typology—have been estimated to test if each selected explanatory variable is significant and how it acts in determining the level of subjective economic well-being. To achieve this, we apply an under-used logit model—the partial proportional ordered model. Our analysis, based on data from the 2005 Italian Survey on Income and Living Conditions highlights the main variables affecting the subjecti…

The determinants of subjective economic well-being: an analysis on Italian-Silc data

2011

Using Italian data on Income and living conditions for the year 2005, the paper investigates the main determinants of households’ subjective economic well-being by means of a Partial Proportional Ordered Logit Model. According to a joint subjective and objective perspective of analysis, we use as dependent variable the perceived ability of households to make ends meet. Whereas, we use as explanatory variables some objective aspects of living conditions relating to housing, financial equilibrium, possession of durables and quality of residence place and some socio-demographic characteristics. The empirical results show that the financial strain is the most relevant dimension of living condit…

Ethical Behaviour and Operating Performance of Insurance Broker Firms

2015

In this research we investigate whether there is a relationship between the ethical behaviour of insurance brokers and their operating performance. Specifically, we focus on the practice of deferring the premiums charged to clients in order to invest them in short–term financial products and, as a result, gain an additional financial return to their traditional sources of income. We consider this practice to be an unethical behaviour since uninformed clients, that is, those who are not aware of the legal process of brokerage, expect the broker to immediately process the policy with the insurance company once the premium has been paid. We find that the better the performance and the larger t…

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm: genomics mark epigenetic dysregulation as a primary therapeutic target

2018

Blastic Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell Neoplasm is a rare and aggressive hematological malignancy currently lacking an effective therapy. To possibly identify genetic alterations useful for a new treatment design, we analyzed by whole-exome sequencing fourteen Blastic Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell Neoplasm patients and the patient-derived CAL-1 cell line. The functional enrichment analysis of mutational data reported the epigenetic regulatory program as the most significantly undermined (P<.0001). In particular, twenty-five epigenetic-modifiers were found mutated (e.g., ASXL1, TET2, SUZ12, ARID1A, PHF2, CHD8); ASXL1 was the most frequently affected (28.6% of cases). To evaluate the impact of …

Prognosis Impact of Diabetes in Elderly Women and Men with Non-ST Elevation Acute Coronary Syndrome

2021

Few studies have addressed to date the interaction between sex and diabetes mellitus (DM) in the prognosis of elderly patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTEACS). Our aim was to address the role of DM in the prognosis of non-selected elderly patients with NSTEACS according to sex. A retrospective analysis from 11 Spanish NSTEACS registries was conducted, including patients aged ≥70 years. The primary end point was one-year all-cause mortality. A total of 7211 patients were included, 2,770 (38.4%) were women, and 39.9% had DM. Compared with the men, the women were older (79.95 ± 5.75 vs. 78.45 ± 5.43 years, p &lt
