Reconstitution of Light-Harvesting Complexes from Chlorella fusca (Chlorophyceae) and Mantoniella squamata (Prasinophyceae)

Abstract Reconstitution experiments of light-harvesting complexes were performed with the green alga Chlorella fusca and the chlorophyll c-containing prasinophyte Mantoniella squamata using a modified method according to Plumley and Schmidt [Proc. N atl. Acad. Sei. U .S.A . 84, 146 -150 (1987)]. Changing the pigment supply quantitatively or qualitatively in the reconsti­tution mixture homologous and heterologous reconstitutes were obtained. In contrast to higher plants, light-harvesting polypeptides from green algae are able to bind the chlorophylls as well as the xanthophylls in different stoichiometries. Changes in physicochemical parameters, proximate composition, amino acid and taste profiles of turkey burgers enriched at 1% with soy (control), pulses, Chlorella and Spirulina proteins were studied. Results: Color parameters, pH, ash content, total, essential and non-essential amino acids were significantly different among the different type of turkey burgers prepared. In this regard, turkey burgers made with pea protein presented the highest values for pH and lightness, whereas the samples prepared with broad bean showed the highest redness. Pulsed electric field (PEF) recovery of biomolecules from Chlorella: Extract efficiency, nutrient relative value, and algae morphology analysis

This study investigated the effects of pulsed electric field (PEF) (3 kV/cm, 44 pulses, 99 kJ/kg), solvent (H2O or 50 % DMSO) and time (0, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 min) on the extraction of Chlorella antioxidant biomolecules and minerals. The results showed that PEF treatment increased the biomolecules recovery. For the extraction time of 120 min, more proteins and polyphenols were obtained using water, while more chlorophyll a and b, and carotenoids were obtained using 50 % DMSO as the extraction solvent. The effect of sublethal levels of methylparathion (0,1, 3, 5, 7 mg 1−1) on the freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus, during their entire life cycle was studied. Rotifers were fed on two species of unicellular algae: Nannochloris oculata and Chlorella pyrenoidosa; both algal concentrations were 5 × 105 cell ml−1.

Morphological determination of the phototrophic community composition of biological soil crusts in coastal sand dunes in northern Germany

This dataset comprises the microbial community composition of biological soil crusts in north-German sand dunes. For this we obtained enrichment cultures of phototrophic microorganisms, by placing fragments of biocrusts of the same Petri dishes as used for sequencing, in Petri dishes with Bold Basal (1N BBM) agarized medium (Bischoff and Bold 1963). Cultures were grown under standard laboratory conditions: with a 12-hour alteration of light and dark phases and irradiation of 25 μmol photons m-2 s-1 at a temperature 20 ± 5 ºС. L’estudiant de teologia pren distància respecte dels predicadors medievals, però s’inspira en els clàssics llatins per a desenvolupar la seua creativitat literària i orientar-la cap a lliçons morals, amb un estil que crea escola. The impact of Spirulina, Chlorella and Phaeodactylum tricornutum (P. tricornutum) microalgal extracts obtained by pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) on antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, microbial growth and in vitro gut microbiota composition was evaluated. PLE, compared to conventional extraction, led to a significant (p < 0.05) increase in proteins, carbohydrates, polyphenols, and antioxidant capacities of the three microalgal extracts. Moreover, Spirulina and P. tricornutum extracts significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the in vitro activation of the inflammatory NF-κB pathway.
