Selective chemisorption of carbon monoxide by organic-inorganic hybrid materials incorporating cobalt(III) corroles as sensing components.

2007

Twenty-one hybrid materials incorporating cobalt(III) corrole complexes were synthesized by a sol–gel process or by grafting the metallocorrole onto a mesostructured silica of the SBA-15 type. All the materials show an almost infinite selectivity for carbon monoxide with respect to dinitrogen and dioxygen in the low-pressure domain where the chemisorption phenomenon is predominant. This peculiar property is of prime importance for an application as a CO sensor. The selectivity slightly decreases at high pressures where nonselective physisorption phenomena mainly occur. The percentage of active sites for CO chemisorption ranges from 22 to 64 %. This low percentage may be attributable to inte…

Determination of the hydrophobicity of organic compounds measured as logPo/w through a new chromatographic method

2009

A new chromatographic method to determine the octanol-water partition coefficient (logP(o/w)) of organic substances is proposed in this paper. This method is based on a previously reported model that relates the retention factor in reversed-phase liquid chromatography with solute (p), mobile phase (P(m)(N)) and stationary phase (P(s)(N)) polarity parameters: logk=(logk)(0)+p(P(m)(N)-P(s)(N)). P(m)(N) values are calculated through expressions that depend only on the organic solvent fraction in the mobile phase. (logk)(0) and P(s)(N) parameters are characteristic of the chromatographic system and are determined from the retention of a selected set of 12 compounds. Then, the p value of a solut…

Residential Exposure to Outdoor Air Pollution during Pregnancy and Anthropometric Measures at Birth in a Multicenter Cohort in Spain

2011

Background: A growing body of research suggests that prenatal exposure to air pollution may be harmful to fetal development. We assessed the association between exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and anthropometric measures at birth in four areas within the Spanish Children’s Health and Environment (INMA) mother and child cohort study. Methods: Exposure to ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and benzene was estimated for the residence of each woman (n = 2,337) for each trimester and for the entire pregnancy. Outcomes included birth weight, length, and head circumference. The association between residential outdoor air pollution exposure and birth outcomes was assessed with linear regress…

Synthesis of [18F]-Fluoroethylfenoterol for imaging β2 receptor status in lung in vivo

2001

5-(-{2-[4-(2-[18F]Fluoroethoxy)-phenyl]-l-methyl-ethylamino}-l-hydroxy-ethyl)-benzene-1, 3-diol ([18F]fluoroethylfenoterol) was synthesised from 4-(2-{benzyl-[2-(3,5-bis-benzyloxy-phenyl)-2-hydroxy-ethyl]-amino}-propyl)-phenol using 2-[18F]fluoroethyltosylate (92% RCY) followed by reductive cleavage of the benzyl protecting groups. Preliminary in vitro tests showed [19F]fluoroethylfenoterol to be as potent in relaxation of lung tissue as fenoterol itself.

On-line extraction coupled to liquid chromatographic analysis of hydrophobic organic compounds from complex solid samples-Application to the analysis…

2019

This work investigates the applicability of on-line extraction (OLE) directly coupled to liquid chromatography (LC) for the dynamic extraction of hydrophobic organic compounds from complex solid samples. The method operates within the existing apparatus of the LC by replacing the valve loop with an extraction vessel comprised of an empty guard column loaded with the sample. In this manner, extraction is accomplished by the mobile phase as it flows through the extraction vessel under high pressure without the need for additional apparatus other than those comprising the LC system or additional sample pretreatment steps. The experimental parameters affecting the extraction efficiency of the m…

Expanding the chemical scope of RNA:methyltransferases to site-specific alkynylation of RNA for click labeling.

2010

This work identifies the combination of enzymatic transfer and click labeling as an efficient method for the site-specific tagging of RNA molecules for biophysical studies. A double-activated analog of the ubiquitous co-substrate S-adenosyl-l-methionine was employed to enzymatically transfer a five carbon chain containing a terminal alkynyl moiety onto RNA. The tRNA:methyltransferase Trm1 transferred the extended alkynyl moiety to its natural target, the N2 of guanosine 26 in tRNA(Phe). LC/MS and LC/MS/MS techniques were used to detect and characterize the modified nucleoside as well as its cycloaddition product with a fluorescent azide. The latter resulted from a labeling reaction via Cu(I…

Partial purification and characterization of succinyl-CoA synthetase from Saccharomyces cerevisiae

1983

Succinyl-CoA synthetase from Saccharomyces cerevisiae was partially purified (20-fold) with a yield of 44%. The Michaelis-Menten constants were determined: Km (succinate) = 17 mM; Km (ATP) = 0.13 mM; Km (CoA) = 0.03 mM. The succinyl-CoA synthetase has a molecular weight of about 80000 dalton (as determined by polyacrylamide gradient gel electrophoresis). The pH optimum is at 6.0. During fermentation the activity of succinyl-CoA synthetase is lower than in aerobically grown yeast cells. The presence of succinyl-CoA synthetase in fermenting yeasts may be regarded as an indication for the oxidative formation of succinate. In fermenting yeast cells succinyl-CoA synthetase is repressed by glucos…

Fucus vesiculosus extracts as natural antioxidants for improvement of physicochemical properties and shelf life of pork patties formulated with oleog…

2018

There is limited information in the literature concerning the feasibility of using algal extracts as natural additives for improvement of the quality and shelf-life ofmeat products. Hence, a Fucus vesiculosus extract (FVE) at the concentrations of 250mg kg-1 (FVE-250), 500mg kg-1 (FVE-500) and 1000mg kg-1 (FVE-1000) were added to pork patties with linseed oil oleogel as a fat replacer. RESULTS: Total polyphenol content of FVE was determined to be 20 g phloroglucinol equivalents 100 g-1 extract. Antioxidant values ranged from 37.5 𝛍mol of Trolox equivalents (TE) g-1 (FRAP assay) to 2111 𝛍mol TE g-1 extract (ABTS assay). Regarding oxidation stability, FVE-1000 showed the lowest values of th…

Novel bioactive bromopyrrole alkaloids from the Mediterranean sponge Axinella verrucosa

2005

The Mediterranean sponge Axinella verrucosa has been investigated for its alkaloid composition and has been found to produce a complex mixture of bromopyrrole alkaloids. Along with the previously isolated compounds 5-18, four novel alkaloids of this class, compounds 1-4, have been isolated, and their structures established through spectroscopic methods. Compounds 1-4 were found to display neuroprotective activity against the agonists serotonin and glutamate in vitro.

Nematode community response to fish-farm impact in the western Mediterranean.

2002

A previous investigation on fish-farm biodeposition effects on benthos, carried out in the Gaeta Gulf (northwestern Mediterranean Sea), revealed a strong impact on meiofaunal assemblages. This study implements these findings by examining in detail the nematode assemblage and its response to organic enrichment from the start of a fish farm activity to the conclusion of the fish rearing cycle. Density, community structure and individual size were utilised for univariate (genus, trophic diversity and abundance patterns) and multivariate analyses (MDS) in order to identify the best descriptors of impact and the response of the nematode assemblages. Nematodes displayed significantly reduced dens…
