A measurement of the neutron to 199Hg magnetic moment ratio

The neutron gyromagnetic ratio has been measured relative to that of the 199Hg atom with an uncertainty of 0.8 ppm. We employed an apparatus where ultracold neutrons and mercury atoms are stored in the same volume and report the result γn/γHg=3.8424574(30).
Investigation of the dynamics of bacteriorhodopsin

Bacteriorhodopsin (bR) converted to the blue form by deionization has been reconstituted to the active purple membrane by addition of57Fe ions. Mossbauer spectra measured in a wide temperature range reveal Fe3+ binding places with oxygen atoms in the neighbourhood. No evidence for a well defined functional binding place of the iron has been found. On a timescale faster 100 ns the purple membrane shows increasing flexibility above 200 K. In order to analyse the influence of the lipids, a bacteriorhodopsin sample where the lipid content has been increased artificially by the incorporation of DMPC as well as a sample consisting of lipid bilayer have been investigated.
Mössbauer and TEM studies of the perovskite system (1-y)La2/3 $$A$$ 1/3TiO3·yLaFeO3

The microscopic nature of the Mossbauer phase analysis has been found as being particularly valuable in testing assumptions suggested by TEM results regarding the microdomain structure and the population of different lattice sites by iron ions in the perovskite system (1-y)La2/3\(A\)1/3TiO3·yLaFeO3 with 0.04<y < 0.25 (\(A\) is an A-site vacancy). This system was found to contain only Fe3+-phases which are stable under normal conditions, but moderate heating in vacuo causes a partial reduction of ferric ions to ferrous ions.
Low-Intensity Neutron Emission from TiDx Samples Under Nonequilibrium Conditions

Several experiments were performed that loaded titanium samples with deuterium from the gas phase, changed the temperature of the samples over a wide range, and monitored the neutron emission. Neutron emissions in very low intensity bursts, still significantly above the background, were recorded, revealing that low-energy nuclear reactions in condensed matter can be produced at a very low rate, which occasionally can be high enough to become detectable.

Arsenic, cadmium, chromium, and nickel are classified by IARC as human carcinogens (Group 1), while lead as a probable/possible carcinogen to humans (Group 2A). We explored associations between occupational exposure to metals and breast, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), colorectal, prostate, and stomach cancer in the MCC-Spain population based case-control study. Methods The analyses were based on 3047 controls, and 1499 breast, 1539 colorectal, 332 CLL, 1070 prostate, and 382 stomach cancer cases. Abstract Glycolic acid butyl ester as well as lactic acid ethyl ester react with butadiene in the presence of palladium(II) acetylacetonate and triphenylphosphine as catalyst. The main product is the 2-trans, 7-octadienyl ether of the hydroxy acid ester, which is formed in yields from 65 to 80% at room temperature.
Reversible inhibition of CO2fixation by ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase through the synergic effect of arsenite and a monothiol

The activity of the photosynthetic carbon-fixing enzyme, ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), is partially inhibited by arsenite in the millimolar concentration range. However, micromolar arsenite can fully inhibit Rubisco in the presence of a potentiating monothiol such as cysteine, cysteamine, 2-mercaptoethanol or N-acetylcysteine, but not glutathione. Arsenite reacts specifically with the vicinal Cys172-Cys192 from the large subunit of Rubisco and with the monothiol to establish a ternary complex, which is suggested to be a trithioarsenical. Sol-gel entrapped chromium(VI): a new selective, efficient and recyclable oxidizing system

Abstract The sol-gel entrapment of chromium(VI) within a silica matrix, obtained by oxidation with ozone of the corresponding entrapped chromium(III), was found to be an efficient and recyclable oxidizing system (at least up to 16 times) for benzylic alcohols. No leaching of chromium in solution was observed, which prevented any environmental pollution.
