All-trans retinoic acid restores gap junctional intercellular communication between oral cancer cells with upregulation of Cx32 and Cx43 expressions …

2012

Objective: All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) has been demonstrated to inhibit tumor growth by restoration of gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) via upregulation of connexin (Cx) expression in some solid tumors. However, the relationship between ATRA and GJIC remains unclear in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ATRA on the GJIC function of OSCC. Study design: We measured the effects of ATRA on the viability and cell cycle distribution of SCC9 and Tca8113 OSCC cells. The GJIC function was observed using the scrape-loading dye transfer technique, and the mRNA and protein levels of Cx32 and Cx43 were detected by qRT-PCR, West…

Dimethylsulfoxide as carrier in enzyme cytochemistry.

1971

Addition of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) to the incubation medium of succinate dehydrogenase in a concentration of 10% enhances the staining reaction in the hyphae of the fungus Cercosporella herpotrichoides after an incubation period of 15 min. Controls without DMSO remain unstained. DMSO causes a rapid penetration of the components of the medium through the mucilage that covers the hyphae.

Penetration enhancer containing vesicles as carriers for dermal delivery of tretinoin.

2011

The ability of a recently developed novel class of liposomes to promote dermal delivery of tretinoin (TRA) was evaluated. New penetration enhancer-containing vesicles (PEVs) were prepared adding to conventional phosphatidylcholine vesicles (control liposomes) different hydrophilic penetration enhancers: Oramix® NS10 (OrNS10), Labrasol® (Lab), Transcutol® P (Trc), and propylene glycol (PG). Vesicles were characterized by morphology, size distribution, zeta potential, incorporation efficiency, stability, rheological behaviour, and deformability. Small, negatively charged, non-deformable, multilamellar vesicles were obtained. Rheological studies showed that PEVs had fluidity higher than conven…

Using theozymes for designing transition-state analogs for the intramolecular aldol reaction of δ-diketones

2001

Two theozymes for the intramolecular aldol reaction of δ-diketones have been studied using ab initio methods. The presence of both acid/base residues favors several steps of the aldol reaction. The appropriate positioning of these residues can accelerate one of two diastereromeric reaction pathways, the catalyzed aldol reaction being highly stereoselective. Analysis of the geometrical parameters, charge distribution, and the shape of molecular electrostatic potential for the corresponding acid/base catalyzed transition structure allows us to design adequate transition-state analogs to favor a reactive channel of this intramolecular aldol reaction. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. An overview of the analytical methods for the determination of organic ultraviolet filters in biological fluids and tissues.

2012

Organic UV filters are chemical compounds added to cosmetic sunscreen products in order to protect users from UV solar radiation. The need of broad-spectrum protection to avoid the deleterious effects of solar radiation has triggered a trend in the cosmetic market of including these compounds not only in those exclusively designed for sun protection but also in all types of cosmetic products. Different studies have shown that organic UV filters can be absorbed through the skin after topical application, further metabolized in the body and eventually excreted or bioaccumulated. These percutaneous absorption processes may result in various adverse health effects, such as genotoxicity caused b…

Stereoselective synthesis of 2-amino-1-hydroxy-3-phenylpropylphosphonic acid

1996

Abstract A highly stereoselective synthesis of 2-amino-1-hydroxy-3-phenylpropylphosphonic acid was achieved by simple addition of diethyl phosphite to enantiomeric N-blocked phenylalaninals. These compouds exhibit significant herbicidal activity.

Enantioselective Synthesis of Unsymmetrical Benzoins from (S)-Mandelic Acid Enolate and Aromatic Aldehydes.

2004

The reaction of the lithium enolate of the 1,3-dioxolan-4-one derived from optically active (S)-mandelic acid and pivalaldehyde with aromatic aldehydes proceeds readily to give the corresponding aldol products in good yields and diastereoselectivities. Subsequent hydroxyl protection, basic hydrolysis of the dioxolanone, oxidative decarboxylation of the α-hydroxyacid moiety, and hydroxyl deprotection provides chiral unsymmetrical benzoins with high enantiomeric excesses.
