The effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on total plant nitrogen uptake and nitrogen recovery from soil organic material
2013
SUMMARYArbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi increase nitrogen (N) uptake by their host plants, but their role in plant N capture from soil organic material is still unclear. In particular, it is not clear if AM fungi compete with the host plant for the N coming from the decomposing organic matter (OM), especially when the AM extraradical mycelium (ERM) and plant roots share the same soil volume. The goal of the present research was to study the effects of AM fungi on wheat N capture after the addition of 15N-labelled OM to soil. Durum wheat (Triticum durum) was grown under controlled conditions in a sand:soil mix and the following treatments were applied: (1) AM inoculation with Glomus mosseae…

Heads or Tails? Sandwich-Type Metallocomplexes of Hexakis(2,3-di-O-methyl)-α-cyclodextrin
2020
Native and synthetically modified cyclodextrins (CDs) are useful building blocks in construction of large coordination complexes and porous materials with various applications. Sandwich-type complexes (STCs) are one of the important groups in this area. Usually, coordination of secondary hydroxyls or the “head” portal of native CD molecules to a notional multinuclear ring of metal cations leads to formation of head-to-head STCs. Our study introduces a new CD-ligand, hexakis(2,3-di-O-methyl)-α-cyclodextrin, which enables formation of intriguing head-to-head, but also novel tail-to-tail STCs. Homometallic silver-based head-to-head STCs, AgPF6-STC and AgClO4-STC, were obtained by coordination …
Blue Emitting Organic Light Emitting Diodes
2019
Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) [1] can be fabricated on a range of materials such as glass, silicon or flexible plastic substrates. This can be exploited for the realization of integrated OLED-based fluorescence chemical sensors [2] and microfluidic systems [3] for application in areas such as biotechnology, life sciences, pharmaceuticals, public health and defense. These devices hold promises to be cost effective, ultra-compact (including the possibility to be fabricated into large bidimensional arrays), and capable to handle smaller sample volumes in order to achieve high throughput. Blue light is advantageous because it is strongly absorbed by most sensing molecules attached to bi…

Recent Advances in the Chemistry of 1,2,4-Oxadiazoles
2015
1,2,4-Oxadiazoles experienced an almost 80-year long period of scientific lethargy before they tickled the curiosity of chemists. The study of chemical and photochemical reactivity of 1,2,4-oxadiazoles opened the way to a series of applications in heterocyclic synthesis. Today, 1,2,4-oxadiazoles are known in medicinal chemistry for their use as bioisosters of esters and amides. Furthermore, fluorinated 1,2,4-oxadiazoles have been applied in materials science either by themselves or for the targeted modification of polymers and macromolecules. Overall, the synthesis of 1,2,4-oxadiazoles can be planned to fine-tune their properties for featured applications. Their versatility, either as start…
Review article: recommended reading list of early publications on atomic layer deposition - outcome of the "virtual Project on the History of ALD"
2017
Atomic layer deposition (ALD), a gas-phase thin film deposition technique based on repeated, self-terminating gas-solid reactions, has become the method of choice in semiconductor manufacturing and many other technological areas for depositing thin conformal inorganic material layers for various applications. ALD has been discovered and developed independently, at least twice, under different names: atomic layer epitaxy (ALE) and molecular layering. ALE, dating back to 1974 in Finland, has been commonly known as the origin of ALD, while work done since the 1960s in the Soviet Union under the name "molecular layering" (and sometimes other names) has remained much less known. The virtual proj…
