Internal Public Audit in the Financial Crisis Context

2013

Abstract The financial crisis effects have left their mark on the area of internal audit, but the attention on the responsibility that internal auditors could have in preventing the onset of such a crisis is quite low. Audit plays a vital role in the entities functioning by contributing to economic credibility. In this paper we have presented the role and objectives of internal audit, the organization and activity of internal audit in local government in Romania, the outsourced system and how it helped in preventing and/or managing the economic downturn.

Addressing informality, gender and ethnicity in domestic labour

2014

The legal framework concerning household employment has undergone a number of changes worldwide. The 100th International Labour Conference in June 2011 was highly significant as it adopted the first international labour standards specifically for domestic workers: Convention No. 189 and the supplementing Recommendation No. 201. This article analyses recent Spanish reforms (2011–2013) in order to assess the effects of these changes, taking into account the characteristics of domestic work: feminized, informal, ethnicized and vulnerable. Although aimed at improving employment and working conditions, the new Spanish legislation has resulted in a number of setbacks as well as some progress. The…

IS PUTTING USERS FIRST AN ORGANISATIONAL KEY TO SUCCESS IN CROSS-PROFESSIONAL COOPERATION? An interview study about cooperation between service units…

2019

Cooperation among professionals in health, social and educational sectors is much needed to let the patient/client/pupil experience an entirety of services provided. However, cooperation is not easy in general. It seems even more challenging when it comes to service provisions to people affected by dual diagnoses. Our research question is influenced by this challenge and reads: What promotes cross-units’ cooperation between professionals involved in service provisions for people affected by both intellectual disability and mental illness? The knowledge is constructed by means of interviewing municipality-employed professionals (N = 21) about their experiences with successful cases. The stud…

KEY FACTORS FOR SUCCESS IN AGRIFOOD FIRMS: THE CASE OF SPANISH FRUIT & VEGETABLES COOPERATIVES

2015

Interaction among employees: how does learning take place in the social communities of the workplace and how might such learning be supervised?

2005

The purpose of the present study is to look at the senses in which everyday workplace interactions can be considered manifestations of learning at work and the ways in which such activity could be supervised. Our data consist of discussions between employees taped in two technology enterprises and three municipal youth centres, analysed from an ethnographical and an ethnomethodological perspective. The paper concludes with a discussion of how learning at work—seen as a contextual activity bound up with the work process itself and with the communities that operate within the work process—could be taken into account in the practices of fostering and supervising such learning.

Opening the gates or coping with the flow? Governing access to higher education in Northern and Central Europe

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Higher Education. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10734-014-9830-1 Access to higher education has become a key policy issue in most European countries in since the last half of the last century. We trace the historical development of the ways in which governments in two countries within the region, Norway and Poland, have attempted to steer developments. Three access waves or phases are identified and contextualized, by illuminating dominant policy logics and tensions. Our analysis suggests that “coping with the flow” reflects a continuous attempt to instrumentalize higher education and make it serve different …

Individual, co-active and collective coping and organizational stress: A longitudinal study

2019

This study aims to identify the association between changes in three types of problem-focused coping (individual, organizational co-active and collective) and the change in the appraisal of different facets of employees' stress and the organizational stress climate. These relationships are tested by means of Bayesian Multilevel Structural Equation Modeling and a two-wave panel design. The sample is composed of 525 teachers in 100 schools. Stress experiences and coping behaviors are assessed during the first and third terms of the academic year. The results show that an increase in the use of individual problem-focused coping has little to no effect on the decrease in individual stress appra…

Managing Trust and Risk in New Biotechnologies: The Case of Population Genome Project and Organ Transplantation in Latvia

2011

The paper analyses the application of the two biotechnologies – organ transplantation and population genome project in Latvian society. The case is based on 16 interviews with doctors, scientists, patients and donors and media texts discourse analysis. The notions of trust and risk emerge as a counterpart of coping with the challenges the technologies pose to the “traditional” relations between actors and concepts involved – organs, genes, illness, patients, doctors, hospital units and science. New biotechnologies erode previously stable categories and relationships between the notions and experiences of illness/ health, individual/collective, science/society, nature/culture, gift/market an…

Pairwise DNA Sequence Alignment Optimization

2015

This chapter presents a parallel implementation of the Smith-Waterman algorithm to accelerate the pairwise alignment of DNA sequences. This algorithm is especially computationally demanding for long DNA sequences. Parallelization approaches are examined in order to deeply explore the inherent parallelism within Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors. This chapter looks at exploiting instruction-level parallelism within 512-bit single instruction multiple data instructions (vectorization) as well as thread-level parallelism over the many cores (multithreading using OpenMP). Between coprocessors, device-level parallelism through the compute power of clusters including Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors using M…
