Freedom from Hate: Solidarity and Non-violent Political Struggle in Poland

2002

Thirty-first August 2001 marked the 21st anniversary of the end of prolonged strikes in Poland that resulted in the forming of the trade union Solidarity. The struggle of Solidarity remains a powerful lesson in political non-violence. In spite of the wide support it enjoyed in Polish society, Solidarity was outlawed in December 1981 and its leaders were imprisoned. If one is suppressed by force, one can answer with force. But Solidarity did not. Was it an ethical standpoint that Solidarity used only peaceful means in its defence or a utilitarian or pragmatic strategy? The paper argues that it was both. The struggle of Solidarity was not only guided by pragmatic considerations on how to achi…

Multimodal accomplishment of alignment and affiliation in the local space of distant meetings

2017

Technology-mediated (i.e. distant) meetings are complex settings that involve distributed participation frameworks and the coordination of actions in multiple interactional spaces. This paper examines how problems with hearing, speaking, or understanding in the overall meeting space enable the negotiation of alignment and affiliation by co-present participants in the same local meeting space. Conversation analysis is used to investigate the local accomplishment of alignment and affiliation achieved through the sequential and temporal organization of verbal, embodied, and material resources of interaction in three types of situations: during technological trouble, silences, and disagreements…

Do networks matter? Network involvement and policy learning in Nordic regions

2017

ABSTRACTThe capacities of regions to form networks are an important feature of regional cooperation. This article assesses why Nordic regions engage in network activities and what new organizational patterns of collaboration emerge. It draws on historical data from a 2006–2008 survey of elected regional politicians from the Nordic countries. The article argues that through this process, participation in cross-border networks matters for regional learning as measured by the policy-choices of regions.

Be congruent and I will be loyal: the case of sport services

2019

This research analyzes the relationship between brand perception of users of a sports service and their levels of loyalty. Data were treated with both SPSS 23 and EQS 6.3, using CFA to confirm reliability and validity and creating a model to be tested. Credibility and trust can explain up to 73% of the attitudes, while attitudes would explain up to 50% of loyalty. In the case of sports services, brand perception and its relationship with loyalty remain largely unaddressed. For this reason, it is interesting to carry out research on this subject, bringing new evidence to business reality to help ma…
