Structure-Dependent Dissolution and Restructuring of Calcite Surfaces by Organophosphonates

Organophosphonates are well-known to strongly interact with the surfaces of various minerals, such as brucite, gypsum, and barite. In this work, we study the influence of six systematically varied organophosphonate molecules (tetraphosphonates and diphosphonates) on the dissolution process of the (10.4) surface of calcite. In order to pursue a systematic study, we have selected organophosphonates that exhibit similar structural features, but also systematic architectural differences. EcFLO, a FLORICAULA-like gene from Eschscholzia californica is expressed during organogenesis at the vegetative shoot apex.

FLORICAULA/ LEAFY-like genes were initially characterized as flower meristem identity genes. In a range of angiosperms, expression occurs also in vegetative shoot apices and developing leaves, and in some species with dissected leaves expression is perpetuated during organogenesis at the leaf marginal blastozone. The evolution of these expression patterns and associated functions is not well understood. Lower rim arylation of calix[n]arenes with extended perfluorinated domains

Abstract Exhaustive O-arylation of p-tert -butylcalix[ n ]arenes 2 ( n  = 4–8) with an excess of 3-pentadecafluoroheptyl-5-pentafluorophenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole 3 and K 2 CO 3 in refluxing acetonitrile provides an easy entry to a new family of perfluorinated calix[ n ]arenes 1 . The cyclic tetramer furnishes a mixture of cone , partial cone , and 1,2-alternate conformers, while the larger macrocycles afford single products. The structures of all new compounds are substantiated by NMR techniques and MALDI-TOF mass spectral data. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies on the pentamer derivative 1b reveal a distorted cone-in conformation of the calixarene cup.

Plant regeneration from isolated cells ofLavandula latifolia medicus

Single cells were obtained from hypocotyl-derived callus ofLavandula latifolia Medicus. Cells were plated in Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with indoleacetic acid (IAA), benzyladenine (BA), and several IAA-BA combinations. Cell division required the simultaneous presence of IAA and BA in the culture medium, but callus formation was only achieved with 0.1 or 1 mg/liter IAA and 2 mg/liter BA. To induce organogenesis, calli were transferred to various regeneration media. Magnetic functionalities in MOFs: from the framework to the pore

In this review, we show the different approaches so far developed to prepare Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) presenting electronic functionalities, with particular attention to magnetic properties. We will cover the chemical design of the framework necessary for the incorporation of different magnetic phenomena, as well as the encapsulation of functional species in the pores leading to hybrid multifunctional MOFs combining an extended lattice with a molecular lattice.

Malignant melanoma is well known for its primary unresponsiveness to chemotherapy. The mechanisms conferring this intrinsic resistance are unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of genes involved in DNA repair in a panel of human melanoma cell variants exhibiting low and high levels of resistance to 4 commonly used drugs in melanoma treatment, i.e., vindesine, etoposide, fotemustine and cisplatin. We show that in melanoma cells exhibiting resistance to cisplatin, etoposide and vindesine, the nuclear content of each of the DNA mismatch repair (MMR) proteins hMLH1, hMSH2 and hMSH6 was reduced by 30–70%. Abstract Introduction Imaging of somatostatin receptor expressing tumours has been greatly enhanced by the use of 68 Ga-DOTATOC and PET/CT. Methods In this work, a purification method for the 68 Ge/ 68 Ga generator eluate and a method to produce 68 Ga-DOTATOC suitable for clinical use were evaluated. The generator eluate was purified and concentrated on a cation-exchange cartridge in HCl/acetone media. The efficacy of this procedure in eliminating metal impurities from the 68 Ga solution was investigated by ICP-MS. The radiotracer quality was evaluated by radio-TLC, GC and γ-ray spectrometry. Acquired resistance to antineoplastic agents is a frequent obstacle in tumor therapy. Malignant melanoma cells are particularly well known for their unresponsiveness to chemotherapy; only about 30% of tumors exhibit a transient clinical response to treatment. In our study, we investigated the molecular mechanism of acquired resistance of melanoma cells (MeWo) to the chloroethylating drug fotemustine. Determination of O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) activity showed that MeWo cells that acquired resistance to fotemustine upon repeated treatment with the drug display high MGMT activity, whereas the parental cell line had no detectable MGMT. Dysfunction of Oskyddad causes Harlequin-type ichthyosis-like defects in Drosophila melanogaster.

Prevention of desiccation is a constant challenge for terrestrial organisms. Land insects have an extracellular coat, the cuticle, that plays a major role in protection against exaggerated water loss. Here, we report that the ABC transporter Oskyddad (Osy)—a human ABCA12 paralog—contributes to the waterproof barrier function of the cuticle in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. We show that the reduction or elimination of Osy function provokes rapid desiccation. Osy is also involved in defining the inward barrier against xenobiotics penetration. Consistently, the amounts of cuticular hydrocarbons that are involved in cuticle impermeability decrease markedly when Osy activity is reduced. …

Diorganotin(IV) and triorganotin(IV) complexes of meso-tetra(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphine induce apoptosis in A375 human melanoma cells

The cytotoxic effect of several diorganotin(IV) and triorganotin(IV)-meso-tetra(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphine derivatives was tested and only the (Bu(2)Sn)(2)TPPS and the (Bu(3)Sn)(4)TPPS showed cytotoxicity on A375 human melanoma cells. To examine the pathway of (Bu(2)Sn)(2)TPPS or (Bu(3)Sn)(4)TPPS induced A375 cell death, DNA fragmentation analysis, Annexin V binding and PI uptake as well as caspases activation analysis by Western blot were carried out. A375 cells treated exhibited several typical characteristics of apoptosis.
