In this paper, a newly developed controller for active heave compensated offshore cranes is compared with state-of-the-art control methods. The comparison is divided into a numerical part on stability margins as well as operational windows and an experimental validation of the expected performance improvement based on a full-scale testing on site with a crane rated to 250 metric tons. Such a crane represents the typical target for the new control method using a combination of active and passive hydraulic actuation on the main winch. This paper concerns the stability issue of pump-controlled single-rod cylinders, known as mode switching. First, a review of the topic is provided. Thereafter, the most recently proposed solution for the elimination of mode switching is investigated and shown to result in unstable behavior under certain operating conditions. A theoretical analysis is provided demonstrating the underlying mechanisms of this behavior. Based on the analysis, a novel control strategy is proposed and investigated numerically. Abstract A numerical and an experimental campaign were carried out with varying oscillation frequency and interface pressure. The local values of the main field variables at the contact interface between the specimens were predicted by a Lagrangian, implicit, thermo-mechanical FEM model and used as input of a dedicated Neural Network (NN). This paper presents the results of an experimental and numerical campaign on Linear Friction Welding of dissimilar AA2011-T8 and AA6082-T6 aluminum alloys. Experimental tests were carried out with constant oscillation amplitude and process time. Varying oscillation frequency, interface pressure, specimen geometry and mutual position were used. Grain size measurements, HV tests and EDX analysis were considered to characterize the microstructure of the joints as a function of the input process parameters. A hybrid state observer design is presented herein to estimate sway-angle and angular velocity in trolley systems with pendulum. In general, anti-sway control for trolley systems with pendulum such as overhead cranes are designed based on sway-angle signals detected by angular sensors. Opposed to that, a state observer without those sensors is proposed to estimate the sway-angle of the pendulum. A standard linear continuous feedback observer causes estimation error owing to the system nonlinearity and modeling error. Electro-hydraulic compact drives (ECDs) are an emerging technology for linear actuation in a wide range of applications. Especially within the low power range of 5–10 kW, the plug-and-play capability, good energy efficiency and small space requirements of ECDs render this technology a promising alternative to replace conventional valve-controlled linear drive solutions. In this power range, ECDs generally rely on passive cooling to keep oil and system temperatures within the tolerated range. In less prescriptive environments where individuals are told ‘what to do’\ud but not ‘how to do’, synchronization can be a byproduct of strategic thinking,\ud prediction, and local interactions. We prove this in the context of multipopulation\ud robust mean-field games. The model sheds light on a multi-scale\ud phenomenon involving fast synchronization within the same population and\ud slow inter-cluster oscillation between different populations.
Differential contributions of the two human cerebral hemispheres to action timing

Rhythmic actions benefit from synchronization with external events. Auditory-paced finger tapping studies indicate the two cerebral hemispheres preferentially control different rhythms. It is unclear whether left-lateralized processing of faster rhythms and right-lateralized processing of slower rhythms bases upon hemispheric timing differences that arise in the motor or sensory system or whether asymmetry results from lateralized sensorimotor interactions. Motor inhibitory control implemented as response inhibition is an essential cognitive function required to dynamically adapt to rapidly changing environments. Despite over a decade of research on the neural mechanisms of response inhibition, it remains unclear, how exactly response inhibition is initiated and implemented.
