A global model for the estimation of transport costs

2019

This paper presents a model of transport cost determinants that corrects the specification problems observed in the transport cost equations in previous literature. The model includes freight transport supply and demand, as well as infrastructure quality and non-time-varying fixed effects related to the route, the exporting company, its strategy and the product. In addition, when defining the origin-destination routes, the model more appropriately accounts for economies of network and economies of scale. In order to build the database, 583 personal interviews were conducted over the course of 2011 with producing companies that ship goods and with the logistics operators. As a result, 305 ro…

A New Dynamic Model for Anticipatory Adaptive Control of Airline Seat Reservation via Order Statistics of Cumulative Customer Demand

2017

This paper deals with dynamic anticipatory adaptive control of airline seat reservation for the stochastic customer demand that occurs over time T before the flight is scheduled to depart. It is assumed that time T is divided into m periods, namely a full fare period and m−1 discounted fare periods. The fare structure is given. An airplane has a seat capacity of U. For the sake of simplicity, but without loss of generality, we consider (for illustration) the case of nonstop flight with two fare classes (business and economy). The proposed policies of the airline seat inventory control are based on the use of order statistics of cumulative customer demand, which have such properties as bivar…

Adaptive Stochastic Airline Seat Inventory Control under Parametric Uncertainty

2013

Airline seat inventory control is a very profitable tool in the airline industry. The problem of adaptive stochastic airline seat inventory control lies at the heart of airline revenue management. This problem concerns the allocation of the finite seat inventory to the stochastic customer demand that occurs over time before the flight is scheduled to depart. The objective is to find the right combination of customers of various fare classes on the flight such that revenue is maximized. In this paper, the static and dynamic policies of stochastic airline seat inventory control (airline booking) are developed under parametric uncertainty of underlying models, which are not necessarily alterna…

Monitahoisten vaatimusten keskellä: Yksinhuoltajaäitien epätyypilliset työajat ja työn ja perhe-elämän yhteensovittaminen

2020

Customer Relationships Management in Organizations

2013

Abstract In recent years, the market for on-demand CRM applications suffered especially in the segment of small and medium companies because of the concerns about the cost and the complexity of on request implementations. CRM on demand is a good choice for companies that want to implement standard processes that can use data structures “out of box” with little or not at all internal IT support and does not require complex or real-time integration with back office systems. However, on-demand CRM software is not always as simple as vendors want us to believe. Customizing can be problematic and interface tools of CRM vendors can not provide desired levels of integration. Implementing a hosted …

Method to Define User Interfaces in the Requirements Analysis Phase

2018

Many requirements for quality in use are elicited in the late development phase. However, if requirements are elicited in the late development phase, the development may return to the previous phase or some requirements cannot be realized due to costs and schedules. To reduce these cases, we propose a method to elicit the requirements in the requirements analysis phase. First, software developers analyze the user characteristics (UCs) of the target users and specify important quality characteristics (QCs) for quality in use and UI design items based on the relationships among UC, QC, and UI design items. Because UI design items are considerations to develop UIs, the specified UI design item…

Cardiovascular response to psychosocial repeated stress in caregivers of offspring with schizophrenia.

2013

AbstractTaking care of offspring suffering a long-term illness such as schizophrenia is one of the more stressful life experiences. Care conditions may act as a protective factor in the health of the caregiver. The present study assesses heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and mood responses to psychosocial stress in 16 mothers receiving specialised support for the care of their offspring (CARE+) and in 11 mothers caring for their offspring without support (CARE−). The CARE− group take care of less functional and more symptomatic offspring; and display higher basal, but lower HR, responses after stress than the CARE+ group. No significant group effects were found for BP. For mood states, …

“In States Unborn and Accents Yet Unknown”: Spectral Shakespeare in Paolo and Vittorio Taviani’s Cesare deve morire (Caesar Must Die).

2014

The paper focuses on Paolo and Vittorio Taviani’s Cesare deve morire (Caesar Must Die) (2012), an Italian adaptation of Julius Caesar set in a high security prison in Rome with a cast entirely made of convicts or former convicts. It explores how this adaptation "deconstructs" and "rewrites" Shakespeare (from an "Interview" with the film directors), especially by setting Julius Caesar in the "unborn state" of a prison, and through the use of a number of "accents yet unknown"–the inclusion of "dialects" from the South of Italy that not only displace the English "original" but also "standard" Italian translations of the play. The paper argues that the "Shakespeare" that emerges from this film …

Silicon Nanowire Sensors Enable Diagnosis of Patients via Exhaled Breath

2016

Two of the biggest challenges in medicine today are the need to detect diseases in a noninvasive manner and to differentiate between patients using a single diagnostic tool. The current study targets these two challenges by developing a molecularly modified silicon nanowire field effect transistor (SiNW FET) and showing its use in the detection and classification of many disease breathprints (lung cancer, gastric cancer, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). The fabricated SiNW FETs are characterized and optimized based on a training set that correlate their sensitivity and selectivity toward volatile organic compounds (VOCs) linked with the various disease breathprints. The b…

Mammary odor cues and pheromones: mammalian infant-directed communication about maternal state, mammae, and milk

2010

International audience; Neonatal mammals are exposed to an outstandingly powerful selective pressure at birth, and any mean to alleviate their localization effort and accelerate acceptance to orally grasp a nipple and ingest milk should have had advantageous consequences over evolutionary time. Thus, it is essential for females to display a biological interface structure that is sensorily conspicuous and executively easy for their newborns. Females' strategy to increase the conspicuousness of nipples could only exploit the newborns' most advanced and conserved sensory systems, touch and olfaction, and selection has accordingly shaped tactilely and olfactorily conspicuous mammary structures.…
