Robust control of stochastic systems against bounded disturbances with application to flight control
2014
This paper investigates the problems of state observer design and observer-based integral sliding-mode control (SMC) for a class of Itô stochastic systems subject to simultaneous input and output disturbances. A new type of sliding-mode-based descriptor observer method is developed to approximate the system state and disturbance vectors. An integral-type SMC scheme is proposed based on the state estimation to stabilize the overall system. The main contributions of this approach are as follows: 1) The desired estimations of state and disturbance vectors can be obtained simultaneously, and 2) in the designed sliding-mode observer, the integral term of the Itô stochastic noise is eliminated …
Photovoltaic plant array reconfiguration: Design of a new device
2014
An efficient strategy to improve unequally irradiated PV plants performances is based on the reconfiguration of the connections between the modules. In this paper, an algorithm, for this purpose conceived, is presented. Moreover, the design, realization and finally also the set up of a new reconfiguration system device is fully shown and discussed. The algorithm conceived simulates several possible series-parallel connections under varying irradiation conditions, and determines the optimal modules connection in order to get the maximum output power. In this way, the reconfiguration system may set up the reconfiguration strategy. The reconfiguration system prototype set up, basically consist…
Vibration control for adjacent structures using local state information
2014
In this paper, a novel strategy for structural vibration control of multi-structure systems is presented. This strategy pays particular attention to mitigating negative interstructure interactions. Moreover, it is based on recent advances in static output–feedback control, which make possible the efficient computation of decentralized velocity-feedback controllers by solving a single-step optimization problem with Linear Matrix Inequality constraints. To illustrate the main ideas, a local velocity-feedback energy-to-peak controller is designed for the seismic protection of a two-building system. This controller is remarkably effective and extremely simple. Moreover, it can also be implement…
Measuring Female Entrepreneurs’ Happiness from Online Feedback
2019
Entrepreneurship provides an important solution to the unemployment problem. This is also very important in economic growth. It has financial, psychological and social risks while taking the situation into consideration. In addition, women’s participation in the work force has a vital importance in Turkey’s national income. Nearly 8.5% of women are in management, or in decision-making positions. It is important to measure happiness of these female workforce in order to understand and manage their feelings. Our previous study investigated successful women happiness and ideas about being entrepreneurial women in Turkey to discover the factors of the happy women entrepreneurs’ success in busin…
Evaluation of Female Entrepreneurs’ Emotional Feedback
2018
Female unemployment rates are very high in Turkey. Women’s participation in the work force will not only increase the national income but also increase the number of female entrepreneurs in business life to join what is traditionally considered a man’s world. Although there are few (only about 8.5%) women in management, there are women in top and decision-making positions. To encourage Turkish women into entrepreneurship, there are third-party online organizations which share and publicize online success stories of Turkish female entrepreneurs. This research aims to discover the factors related to female entrepreneurs’ success in business life. The aim of the research is to evaluate female …
Application of the IO Methodology to the Energy and Environmental Analysis of a Regional Context
2009
Performing an energy and environmental analysis, researchers have to face many problems regarding the data quality and availability. Data are often out-of-date, not representative and consistent or, frequently, referred to faraway geographic and productive contexts. The Input-Output (IO) model, due to its simplicity, allows to acquire information regarding the energy and environmental performances of productive sectors.
Constructing Antidictionaries in Output-Sensitive Space
2021
A word $x$ that is absent from a word $y$ is called minimal if all its proper factors occur in $y$. Given a collection of $k$ words $y_1,y_2,\ldots,y_k$ over an alphabet $\Sigma$, we are asked to compute the set $\mathrm{M}^{\ell}_{y_{1}\#\ldots\#y_{k}}$ of minimal absent words of length at most $\ell$ of word $y=y_1\#y_2\#\ldots\#y_k$, $\#\notin\Sigma$. In data compression, this corresponds to computing the antidictionary of $k$ documents. In bioinformatics, it corresponds to computing words that are absent from a genome of $k$ chromosomes. This computation generally requires $\Omega(n)$ space for $n=|y|$ using any of the plenty available $\mathcal{O}(n)$-time algorithms. This is because a…
On the Fallacy of Forward Linkages: A Note in the Light of Recent Results
2009
Following on from de Mesnard’s (2009) radical criticism of the Ghosh supply-driven model, this paper draws the dramatic consequences for the widespread use of forward linkages in input-output analysis applied to regional science: the practice must be abandoned. The arguments are based on three points: (i) it is impossible simultaneously to choose the Leontief model for the backward effects and the Ghosh model for the forward effects; (ii) it is impossible simultaneously to consider a production function of complementary inputs (Leontief) and a production function of perfectly substitutable inputs (Ghosh); and most importantly (iii) price effects and output effects remain inextricably mixed …
EVALUATION OF EFFICIENCY IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR
2016
The paper is focused on the efficiency of government activities and possibilities of evaluating it. Nowadays an appropriate use of public finances is an urgent problem of financial management of the state. Therefore, a special emphasis is put on the necessity to evaluate the results of activities of the public sector. These results have become an important element of the public financial system oriented towards results, as they form a stable base for planning and evaluating government budget resources. Being unaware of results, it is impossible to estimate if the aims and tasks set by the government financial policy are real and appropriate to the current situation and financial resources. …
Fiscal Rules and Macroeconomic Stability
2005
In this paper we analyze the impact of fiscal rules on the effectiveness of fiscal policy as a macroeconomic stabilizing instrument. First, we review the available evidence on the effects of fiscal policy to affect output in the short run and real interest rates and investment and growth in the long run, and we show how the use of fiscal rules has proved useful in restraining debt and deficits. Secondly, we discuss if debt consolidation rules trade off higher output instability in exchange for lower deficits, using three alternative representations of the intertemporal substitution mechanism in a SDGE framework. Our main conclusion is that both the impact of discretionary fiscal policy and …
