Application of beetroot's nitrates juice in team sports
2023
News. - Beet juice has recently become the focus of interest of many research entities. This is due to its positive effects on many aspects of exercise in various sports disciplines. Supplementation with nitrate-rich beet juice can both reduce muscle soreness and accelerate the recovery process, reduce the aerobic cost of exercise, and improve the physical performance of athletes. Nitrate supplementation increases plasma nitrite concentrations and lowers resting blood pressure. Furthermore, nitrate supplementation also lowers the aerobic cost during submaximal exercise and may, under certain circumstances, increase exercise tolerance and performance. This is due to the increased bioavailabi…
Extraction of Antioxidant Compounds and Pigments from Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) Assisted by Pulsed Electric Fields and the Binary Mixture of …
2021
The application of pulsed electric fields (PEF) is an innovative extraction technology promoting cell membrane electroporation, thus allowing for an efficient recovery, from an energy point of view, of antioxidant compounds (chlorophylls, carotenoids, total phenolic compounds, etc.) from microalgae. Due to its selectivity and high extraction yield, the effects of PEF pre-treatment (3 kV/cm, 100 kJ/kg) combined with supplementary extraction at different times (5–180 min) and with different solvents (ethanol (EtOH)/H2O, 50:50, v/v
Agricultural Residue Management for Sustainable Power Generation: The Poland Case Study
2021
The European Union has set targets for renewable energy utilization. Poland is a member of the EU, and its authorities support an increase in renewable energy use. The background of this study is based on the role of renewable energy sources in improving energy security and mitigation of climate change. Agricultural waste is of a significant role in bioenergy. However, there is a lack of integrated methodology for the measurement of its potential. The possibility of developing an integrated evaluation methodology for renewable energy potential and its spatial distribution was assumed as the hypothesis. The novelty of this study is the integration of two renewable energy sources: crop residu…

2021
This research was funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 768789 as well as by the Polish National Centre of Science under grant no 2017/26/D/ST8/00508. The Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia, as a center of excellence, has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Framework Programme H2020-WIDESPREAD-01-2016-2017-TeamingPhase2 under grant agreement no. 739508, project CAMART2.
Ni/Zn Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) Micro/Nanosystems and Their Azorubine Adsorption Performance
2021
A membranous shaped Ni/Zn layered double hydroxide based nanohybrid was obtained using a low-cost template-free hydrothermal process at optimized growth conditions of 180 °C for 6 h. The synthesized nanohybrid was structurally, texturally and morphologically characterized using different techniques such as X-ray diffraction, FTIR, XPS spectroscopy, BET analysis and FESEM microscopy. The adsorption performance of our product was estimated through the Azorubine dye removal from synthetic wastewater. We therefore studied the synergic effects of Ni/Zn adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH, adsorbate concentration, stirring speed and temperature on the Azorubine adsorption efficiency. In this inves…
Study of High-Temperature Behaviour of ZnO by Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy
2021
Wurtzite-type zinc oxide (w-ZnO) is a widely used material with a pronounced structural anisotropy along the c axis, which affects its lattice dynamics and represents a difficulty for its accurate description using classical models of interatomic interactions. In this study, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) was employed to simulate a bulk w-ZnO phase in the NpT ensemble in the high-temperature range from 300 K to 1200 K. The results of the simulations were validated by comparison with the experimental Zn K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra and known diffraction data. AIMD NpT simulations reproduced well the thermal expansion of the lattice, and the pronounced …
Interfacial Self-Assembly to Spatially Organize Graphene Oxide Into Hierarchical and Bioactive Structures
2020
Multicomponent self-assembly holds great promise for the generation of complex and functional biomaterials with hierarchical microstructure. Here, we describe the use of supramolecular co-assembly between an elastin-like recombinamer (ELR5) and a peptide amphiphile (PA) to organize graphene oxide (GO) flakes into bioactive structures across multiple scales. The process takes advantage of a reaction—diffusion mechanism to enable the incorporation and spatial organization of GO within multiple ELR5/PA layers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and ImageJ software were used to demonstrate the hierarchical organization of GO flakes within the ELR5/PA lay…
Graphene Field-Effect Transistors Employing Different Thin Oxide Films: A Comparative Study
2019
In this work, we report on a comparison among graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs) employing different dielectrics as gate layers to evaluate their microwave response. In particular, aluminum oxide (Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$), titanium oxide (TiO$_{2}$), and hafnium oxide (HfO$_{2}$) have been tested. GFETs have been fabricated on a single chip and a statistical analysis has been performed on a set of 24 devices for each type of oxide. Direct current and microwave measurements have been carried out on such GFETs and short circuit current gain and maximum available gain have been chosen as quality factors to evaluate their microwave performance. Our results show that all of the devices belonging …
Grafting of (3-chloropropyl)-trimethoxy silane on halloysite nanotubes surface
2021
Modified halloysite nanotubes (HNTs-Cl) were synthesized by a coupling reaction with (3-chloropropyl) trimethoxysilane (CPTMS). The incorporation of chloro-silane onto HNTs surface creates HNTs-Cl, which has great chemical activity and is considered a good candidate as an active site that reacts with other active molecules in order to create new materials with great applications in chemical engineering and nanotechnology. The value of this work lies in the fact that improving the degree of grafting of chloro-silane onto the HNT’s surface has been accomplished by incorporation of HNTs with CPTMS under different experimental conditions. Many parameters, such as the dispersing media, the molar…
