Aqueous extracts of biogenic secondary organic aerosols (BSOAs) have been found to exhibit fluorescence that may interfere with the laser/light-induced fluorescence (LIF) detection of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs). In this study, we quantified the interference of BSOAs to PBAPs by directly measuring airborne BSOA particles, rather than aqueous extracts. BSOAs were generated by the reaction of d-limonene (LIM) or α-pinene (PIN) and ozone (O3) with or without ammonia in a chamber under controlled conditions. Mechanistic aspects of oxalic acid oxidation by photocatalysis and ozonation

Oxalic acid has been oxidised in acidic aqueous solutions (pH 3) using photocatalysis and ozonation alone or coupled. The simultaneous presence of ozone, titanium dioxide and near UV irradiation increases the oxidation rate of oxalic acid to values greater than those deriving from the single contributions of photocatalysis and ozonation. In particular in the present paper ozonation alone, heterogeneous photocatalysis and also combined ozonation with heterogeneous photocatalysis have been used for the oxidation of oxalic acid at acidic pH in the presence of TiO2 Degussa P25. A likely mechanism, able to explain both the homogeneous and heterogeneous processes, is discussed.

Ozone enhanced activity of aqueous titanium dioxide suspensions for photocatalytic oxidation of free cyanide ions

The ozonization and the heterogeneous photocatalytic method are contemporarily applied for the oxidation of free cyanide ions. A batch photoreactor with immersed lamp was used for treating aqueous suspensions containing polycrystalline TiO2 powders irradiated in the near-UV region. Air or ozone–air mixtures were used as oxidation reactants. At the used experimental conditions, the photoreaction proceeds at a measurable rate until low values of cyanide concentration. Strong influence of lowermost stratospheric ozone on lower tropospheric background ozone changes over Europe

[1] Using ozone measurements from two sounding sites and two high-altitude stations in Central Europe, we show evidence for a dominant influence of changes in lowermost stratospheric ozone on the variability and overall upward trend of background ozone in the lower troposphere (3000–3500 m asl) during the 1992–2004 period. Numerical simulations with a stratospheric chemistry transport model suggest that changes in lower stratospheric ozone were driven by dynamics rather than by changes in stratospheric chlorine loading. Tropospheric O3 has a negative impact on growth, development, and productivity of crops. Effects of O3 have been observed in a wide range of physiological characteristics, such as accelerated senescence, decreased photosynthetic assimilation, decreased productivity, and reduced carbon allocation to roots. Different responses to O3 have been observed in related species and, hence, it is thought that the initial mechanism of O3-induced stress on crops is uniform. A better understanding of the effect of O3 and O3-generated reactive oxygen species is necessary for an insight into the impact of O3 in crops. Depletion of ozone and reservoir species of chlorine and nitrogen oxide in the lower Antarctic polar vortex measured from aircraft

Novel airborne in situ measurements of inorganic chlorine, nitrogen oxide species, and ozone were performed inside the lower Antarctic polar vortex and at its edge in September 2012. We focus on one flight during the Transport and Composition of the LMS/Earth System Model Validation (TACTS/ESMVal) campaign with the German research aircraft HALO (High-Altitude LOng range research aircraft), reaching latitudes of 65°S and potential temperatures up to 405 K. Diffusion and Reactions of Photoinduced Interstitial Oxygen Atoms in Amorphous SiO2 Impregnated with 18O-Labeled Interstitial Oxygen Molecules

Both diffusion and reactions of interstitial oxygen atoms (O0) in amorphous SiO2 (a-SiO2) were examined using oxygen-excess a-SiO2 containing 18O-labeled interstitial oxygen molecules (O2) and exposed to F2 laser light (hν = 7.9 eV). Both the F2 laser photolysis of interstitial O2 at 77 K and subsequent heat treatment at ≳200 °C give rise to oxygen exchange between residual interstitial O2 and oxygen atoms in the a-SiO2 network, and these temperatures are far lower than the temperature at which conventional thermal network-interstitial oxygen exchange in unirradiated a-SiO2 occurs (≳700 °C). Aging of biogenic secondary organic aerosol via gas-phase OH radical reactions

The Multiple Chamber Aerosol Chemical Aging Study (MUCHACHAS) tested the hypothesis that hydroxyl radical (OH) aging significantly increases the concentration of first-generation biogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA). OH is the dominant atmospheric oxidant, and MUCHACHAS employed environmental chambers of very different designs, using multiple OH sources to explore a range of chemical conditions and potential sources of systematic error. Long-term ozone exposure of potato: Free radical content and leaf injury analysed by Q-band ESR spectroscopy and image analysis

This paper presents Q-band electron spin resonance (ESR) studies on free radicals (FR) generated in potato leaves exposed to different O(3) levels in open-top chambers (OTC), together with a quantitative study of the relationship between FR signal intensity and area of potato leaf damage.
