Design and Implementation of Acoustic Source Localization on a Low-Cost IoT Edge Platform
2020
The implementation of algorithms for acoustic source localization on edge platforms for the Internet of Things (IoT) is gaining momentum. Applications based on acoustic monitoring can greatly benefit from efficient implementations of such algorithms, enabling novel services for smart homes and buildings or ambient-assisted living. In this context, this brief proposes extreme low-cost sound source localization system composed of two microphones and the low power microcontroller module ESP32. A Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) algorithm has been implemented taking into account the specific features of this board, showing excellent performance despite the memory constraints imposed by the platform. …
Non-negative matrix factorization Vs. FastICA on mismatch negativity of children
2009
In this presentation two event-related potentials, mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a, are extracted from EEG by non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) simultaneously. Typically MMN recordings show a mixture of MMN, P3a, and responses to repeated standard stimuli. NMF may release the source independence assumption and data length limitations required by Fast independent component analysis (FastICA). Thus, in theory NMF could reach better separation of the responses. In the current experiment MMN was elicited by auditory duration deviations in 102 children. NMF was performed on the time-frequency representation of the raw data to estimate sources. Support to Absence Ratio (SAR) of the MMN co…
Computer-assisted preparation in conference interpreting
2017
Preparation has been proposed in the literature as one of the most important phases of an interpreting assignment, especially if the subject is highly specialised. Preparing an assignment in advance aims at bridging the linguistic and extra-linguistic gap between conference participants and interpreters and at reducing the cognitive load during interpretation. For these reasons it is considered crucial in ensuring higher interpreting quality. Yet, preparation is generally time-consuming and interpreters may often experience the feeling of not knowing exactly how to perform this task efficiently. Information technology could change this. Even though the first computer-assisted interpreting s…

Thioflavin T Promotes Aβ(1−40) Amyloid Fibrils Formation
2015
Fibrillogenesis of the small peptide Aβ(1-40) is considered to be the hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. Some evidence indicates small oligomers, rather than mature fibrils, as the key cytotoxic agents. The fluorescent dye Thioflavin T (ThT) is often used to detect amyloid deposits in both in vivo and in vitro experiments, and it is used to study kinetic measurements, under the fundamental hypothesis that this probe does not influence the aggregation processes. We report experimental data showing that ThT may promote the Aβ(1-40) peptide amyloid aggregation changing solvent-peptide interactions and stabilizing more ordered β-like conformation. This finding has a two-fold importance: It is a f…
Photo-inhibition of Ab fibrillation mediated by a newly designed fluorinated oxadiazole
2015
Uncontrolled aggregation of amyloid beta peptide (A?) is the main cause of Alzheimer's Disease. Therapeutic approaches of intervention in amyloid diseases include the use of small molecules able to stabilize the soluble A? conformation, or to redirect the amyloidogenic pathway towards non-toxic and non-fibrillar states. Fluorometric measurements revealed that the 3-(4'-trifluoromethylphenyl)-5-(4'-methoxyphenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole, when irradiated, is able to interact with monomeric A? peptide readdressing the aggregation pathway toward the formation of amorphous aggregates as evidenced by means of CD, AFM, and SAXS measurements. We hypothesize that this compound, under radiation, forms a rea…
Nickel‐Catalyzed C(sp2)−C(sp3) Kumada Cross‐Coupling of Aryl Tosylates with Alkyl Grignard Reagents
2019
Aryl tosylates are an attractive class of electrophiles for cross‐coupling reactions due to ease of synthesis, low price, and the employment of C−O electrophiles, however, the reactivity of aryl tosylates is low. Herein, we report the Ni‐catalyzed C(sp2)−C(sp3) Kumada cross‐coupling of aryl tosylates with primary and secondary alkyl Grignard reagents. The method delivers valuable alkyl arenes by cross‐coupling with challenging alkyl organometallics possessing β‐hydrogens that are prone to β‐hydride elimination and homo‐coupling. The reaction is catalyzed by an air‐ and moisture stable‐Ni(II) precatalyst. A broad range of electronically‐varied aryl tosylates, including bis‐tosylates, underwe…
Luminometric sub-nanoliter droplet-to-droplet array (LUMDA) and its application to drug screening by phase I metabolism enzymes.
2012
Here we show the fabrication of the Luminometric Sub-nanoliter Droplet-to-droplet Array (LUMDA chip) by inkjet printing. The chip is easy to be implemented and allows for a multiplexed multi-step biochemical assay in sub-nanoliter liquid spots. This concept is here applied to the integral membrane enzyme CYP3A4, i.e. the most relevant enzymatic target for phase I drug metabolism, and to some structurally-related inhibitors.
p38 MAPK: A dual role in hepatocyte proliferation through reactive oxygen species
2013
p38 MAPKs are important mediators of signal transduction that respond to a wide range of extracellular stressors such as UV radiation, osmotic shock, hypoxia, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and oxidative stress. The most abundant family member is p38α, which helps to couple cell proliferation and growth in response to certain damaging stimuli. In fact, increased proliferation and impaired differentiation are hallmarks of p38α-deficient cells. It has been reported that reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a critical role in cytokine-induced p38α activation. Under physiological conditions, p38α can function as a mediator of ROS signaling and either activate or suppress cell cycle progression depen…
