Advantage of rare infanticide strategies in an invasion experiment of behavioural polymorphism

2012

Killing conspecific infants (infanticide) is among the most puzzling phenomena in nature. Stable polymorphism in such behaviour could be maintained by negative frequency-dependent selection (benefit of rare types). However, it is currently unknown whether there is genetic polymorphism in infanticidal behaviour or whether infanticide may have any fitness advantages when rare. Here we show genetic polymorphism in non-parental infanticide. Our novel invasion experiment confirms negative frequency-dependent selection in wild bank vole populations, where resource benefits allow an infanticidal strategy to invade a population of non-infanticidal individuals. The results show that infanticidal beh…

Paradigm of tunable clustering using Binarization of Consensus Partition Matrices (Bi-CoPaM) for gene discovery

2013

Clustering analysis has a growing role in the study of co-expressed genes for gene discovery. Conventional binary and fuzzy clustering do not embrace the biological reality that some genes may be irrelevant for a problem and not be assigned to a cluster, while other genes may participate in several biological functions and should simultaneously belong to multiple clusters. Also, these algorithms cannot generate tight cluster…

The GABAergic effect of low doses of lorazepam on social behavior

2002

The aim of this work was to test the antiaggressive effects of lorazepam and to determine whether these effects were mediated by benzodiazepine receptors. In a first experiment, male mice were injected with lorazepam in a range of low doses (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.6 mg/kg) or saline solution. In a second experiment, 1 mg/kg of Ro 15-1788, a benzodiazepine receptor antagonist, and a saline solution were injected before the behavioral test. Results showed that 0.6 mg/kg of lorazepam was the only dose that decreased the total duration of threat ( P < .01) and social investigation ( P < .05) and that 1 mg/kg of Ro 15-1788 had no effects. In the third experiment, animals received two injec- tions…

G protein biased signaling by non-catechol dopamine D1 receptor agonists

2020

Dopamine is a catecholamine neurotransmitter with essential roles in voluntary movement, working memory, attention, and reward. Dopamine acts through five G protein coupled receptors with the D1 and D5 receptors (D1R) stimulating Galphas/olf activation and increasing neuronal excitability. Deficits in D1R signaling are implicated in Parkinson’s disease motor deficits as well as cognitive deficits in schizophrenia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. For more than 40 years, academic and industry scientists have been searching for a drug-like D1R agonist, but this has remained elusive. The challenge in developing D1R selective agonists is that all previous agonists possess a common p…

Pašvadīta koučinga ietekme uz darba pašefektivitāti

2018

Populetum pamiricae ass. nova – an endemic forest association to Pamir in Tajikistan (Middle Asia)

2015

Abstract The floristic structure, distribution and habitat requirements of a forest syntaxon, Populetum pamiricae ass. nova is described. The potential range of the Populetum pamiricae association comprises the mountains of eastern Tajikistan (Pamir Alai Mts), Kashgaria in western China (Kunlun Shan Mts) and north-eastern Afghanistan (Hindu Kush Mts) in Middle Asia. The biotope of this community comprises of high mountain river valleys situated at elevations between 2,500 and 3,200 m above sea level. Phytocoenoses of the Populetum pamiricae association are characterized by the apparent domination in the tree layer of a diagnostic species, Populus pamirica. The tree stand has a mean cover ar…

Genetic polymorphism in dopamine receptor D4 is associated with early body condition in a large population of greater flamingos,Phoenicopterus roseus

2012

Body condition is an important determinant of fitness in many natural populations. However, as for many fitness traits, the underlying genes that regulate body condition remain elusive. The dopamine receptor D4 gene (DRD4) is a promising candidate as dopamine is known to play an important role in the regulation of food intake and the metabolism of both glucose and lipids in vertebrates. In this study, we take advantage of a large data set of greater flamingos, Phoenicopterus roseus, to test whether DRD4 polymorphism predicts early body condition (EBC) while controlling for whole-genome effects of inbreeding and outbreeding using microsatellite multilocus heterozygosity (MLH). We typed 670 o…
