Abstract In a prospective study we evaluated the concentration of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and creatine kinase activities (CK) in shed mediastinal blood in the early postoperative period after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Forty seven patients who underwent first time elective CABG were studied. CTnI levels and CK activities in arterial blood and shed mediastinal blood were measured after admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) and 6 h after unclamping the aorta. Abstract Objective: To investigate the free radicals (FR) generation after ischaemic preconditioning and cardiopulmonary bypass and during reperfusion in CABG patients, and the role of ischaemic preconditioning. Methods: Forty-three CABG patients were randomised into an ischaemic preconditioning and a control group. Background: Conversion to a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) has been advocated after the failure of vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG). The aim of this study was to analyze the differences in anthropometric and nutritional parameters between patients with VBG and those converted to RYGBP. Twelve patients with a new complete bundle branch block after coronary artery bypass grafting underwent transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE). The results of TEE were compared with the pre-operative ventriculography, CK-MB isoenzyme time-release curves and clinical course. We investigated whether cold water immersion (CWI) after intensive training sessions can enhance recovery in elite Olympic weightlifters, taking into account each athlete's individual response pattern. The entire German male Olympic weightlifting national team participated in the study (n = 7), ensuring collection of data from elite athletes only. Passive muscle heating has been shown to reduce the drop in post-warm-up muscle temperature (T m) by about 25 % over 30 min, with concomitant sprint/power performance improvements. We sought to determine the role of leg blood flow in this cooling and whether optimising the heating procedure would further benefit post-warm-up T m maintenance.
