Anodic growth of passive layers on steel rebars in an alkaline medium simulating the concrete pores

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques have been used to study passive layers anodically grown on steel rebars in an aqueous alkaline solution simulating the electrolyte of the concrete pores. Nyquist diagrams recorded by EIS at the different stabilization potentials show a diffusional tail at low frequencies. The analysis of the impedance measurements has been made by means of an equivalent circuit with a Warburg component and within the framework of the point defect model (PDM) theory. It is observed that the calculated concentration of vacancies is a function of the potential in accordance with the theoretical prediction of the PDM.

Improvement of the electrochemical behaviour of Zn-electroplated steel using regenerated Cr(III) passivation baths

[EN] Conversion coatings based on trivalent chromium are more sensitive to the presence of zinc and iron impurities than the chromate formulations. This fact contributes to a decrease in the quality of passivation and to the generation of a significant amount of hazardous liquid waste. Recently, a new eco-innovative process based on Emulsion Pertraction Technology (EPT) is being implemented at industrial scale for selectively removing Zn and Fe from spent passivation baths in order to enhance the lifetime of the Cr (III) baths. Transmission properties at microwave frequencies of two-dimensional metallic lattices

The transmission properties of different metallic photonic lattices (square and rectangular) have been experimentally studied. A numerical algorithm based on time domain finite differences has been used for simulating these photonic structures. The introduction of defects in the two-dimensional metallic lattice modifies its transmission spectrum. If metal rods are eliminated from (or added to) the lattice, extremely narrow peaks are observed at some particular frequencies below (or above) the band pass edge. Thermogalvanic corrosion of Alloy 31 in different heavy brine LiBr solutions

Thermogalvanic corrosion generated between two electrodes of Alloy 31, a highly-alloyed austenitic stainless steel (UNS N08031), has been investigated imposing different temperature gradients in three deaerated LiBr solutions, under open circuit conditions by using a zero-resistance ammeter (ZRA). Besides EIS spectra were acquired in order to explain the obtained results. On the whole, cold Alloy 31 electrodes were anodic to hot Alloy 31 electrodes, since an increase in temperature favoured the cathodic behaviour of the hot electrode. Thermogalvanic corrosion of Alloy 31 in the LiBr solutions studied was not severe, although it negatively affects the corrosion resistance of the cold anode. …

Corrosion resistance of passive films on different stainless steel grades in food and beverage industry

Abstract Passive films were grown on 304 L, 316 L and Duplex stainless steels by immersion at open circuit potential in solutions mimicking food and beverage industry environments. In acidic food stainless steel surfaces are covered by Cr rich passive films, and generalized dissolution occurs on their surface with consequent ions release into the electrolyte. In fatty food the concentration of released ions is significantly lower since generalized corrosion does not occur, but the loss on MnS inclusions strongly reduces the polarization resistance in this environment especially for 304 L due to its higher localized corrosion susceptibility with respect to the other grades.

Analogy between the effects of a mechanical and chemical perturbation on the conductivity of passive films

Abstract In order to study the passivity breakdown of a type 316L stainless steel, the electrochemical impedance and surface stresses were measured under straining conditions. The Mott–Schottky analysis, performed at high frequency, appears as very useful method to study, below the apparent yield strength, the effects of a mechanical stress on the capacitance values. The results obtained in sodium chloride media indicate that the semiconducting properties of passive films formed in a tensile stress field reflect a higher vacancies concentration than those formed in a stress-free state, suggesting that the passive film conductivity is increased. Electrochemical behaviour of copper-nickel alloys as immobilisation matrices for the storage of fission products in CO2-enriched synthetic groundwater

International audience; The surface properties of nickel and copper alloys exposed to simulated French Callovo-Oxfordien ground-water (aerated and CO2-saturated solutions) have been evaluated from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in conjunction with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The kinetic reactions and physical properties of the layers grown on the alloy's surfaces, change versus the Ni content in the alloys and the presence of CO2 in the solution. Improved All-Fiber Acousto-Optic Tunable Bandpass Filter

An all-fiber acousto-optic tunable bandpass filter based on a 1.185-mm long coreless core mode blocker is reported. Experimental results demonstrate a minimal insertion loss of 1.2 dB at the optical resonant wavelength of 1527.7 nm with 3-dB optical bandwidth of 0.83 nm. The optimization of the device takes into account the attenuation of the acoustic wave and leads to an asymmetric configuration in which the coupling section is shorter than the recoupling part. Under the effect of a standing flexural wave the device can be operated as a bandpass modulator. The device exhibits a maximum modulation depth of 28%, 4 dB of insertion loss and 0.97 nm of optical bandwidth at 4.774 MHz.

Actively mode-locked all-fiber laser by 5 MHz transmittance modulation of an acousto-optic tunable bandpass filter

Active mode-locking of an all-fiber ring laser by transmittance modulation of an in-fiber acousto-optic tunable bandpass filter (AOTBF) is reported. Cavity loss modulation is achieved by full acousto-optic mode re-coupling cycle induced by standing flexural acoustic waves. The modulator permits the implementation of 28 dB of nonresonant light suppression, 1.4 nm of modulation bandwidth, 74% of modulation depth and 4.11 dB of optical loss in a 72.5 cm-long all-fiber configuration. The effects of the modulated AOTBF on the laser performance are investigated. Transform-limited optical pulses of 8.8 ps temporal width and 6.0 W peak power were obtained at 4.87 MHz repetition rate.

Optical modeling of nickel-base alloys oxidized in pressurized water reactor

International audience; The knowledge of the aging process involved in the primary water of pressurized water reactor entails investigating a mixed growth mechanism in the corrosion of nickel-base alloys. A mixed growth induces an anionic inner oxide and a cationic diffusion parallel to a dissolution-precipitation process forms the outer zone.
