Linking air–sea energy fluxes and European anchovy potential spawning ground.
2008
The physical and chemical processes of the sea greatly affect the reproductive biology of fishes, mainly influencing both the numbers of spawned eggs and the survivorship of early stages up to the recruitment period. In the central Mediterranean, the European anchovy constitutes one of the most important fishery resource. Because of its short living nature and of its recruitment variability, associated to high environmental variability, this small pelagic species undergo high interannual fluctuation in the biomass levels. Despite several efforts were addressed to characterize fishes spawning habitat from the oceanographic point of view, very few studies analyze the air-sea exchanges effects…
Advanced C++11 Multithreading
2018
Abstract The previous chapter introduced the basic concepts of multithreading using the C++11 threading API starting with basic spawn and join approaches, while finishing with non-trivial synchronization based on mutexes and condition variables. However, the major bottleneck of application performance is usually caused by contention for a shared resource. In case of mutex-based programming all participating threads usually try to acquire the same lock in parallel which effectively serializes the program for lightweight operations such as increment/decrement or updates of a single scalar value. Fortunately, modern CPUs provide dedicated commands that allow for the efficient execution of unin…
Ocean acidification affects fish spawning but not paternity at CO2 seeps
2016
Fish exhibit impaired sensory function and altered behaviour at levels of ocean acidification expected to occur owing to anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions during this century. We provide the first evidence of the effects of ocean acidification on reproductive behaviour of fish in the wild. Satellite and sneaker male ocellated wrasse (Symphodus ocellatus) compete to fertilize eggs guarded by dominant nesting males. Key mating behaviours such as dominant male courtship and nest defence did not differ between sites with ambient versus elevated CO2 concentrations. Dominant males did, however, experience significantly lower rates of pair spawning at elevated CO2 levels. Despite the higher r…
Debating Europe: Effects of the “Eurovision Debate” on EU Attitudes of Young German Voters and the Moderating Role Played by Political Involvement
2016
In the run-up to the elections to the European Parliament in 2014, EU citizens had the unprecedented opportunity to watch televised debates between the candidates running for president of the European Commission. The most important debate was the so-called "Eurovision debate", which was broadcasted in almost all EU member states. In this study we explore the responses of a sample of 110 young German voters, who watched this debate, to the candidates' messages and whether exposure to the debate caused a shift in the respondents' attitudes towards the EU. Combining data from a quasi-experiment, real-time response data, and data from a content analysis of the debate, we find that respondents' …
Embryonic development in corkwing wrasse, Symphodus melops
2019
Corkwing wrasse, Symphodus melops, is one of the main species used as cleaner fish to combat sea lice infestation in salmon aquaculture; however, there is little knowledge about its biology. Here, we describe the embryonic development of this species and examine the viability of the eggs under three temperature regimes. The experiments were conducted at three water temperature regimes, 12, 15, and 18°C, which resemble common sea water temperatures registered during the spawning season of corkwing wrasse at different latitudes along the Norwegian coast. Corkwing wrasse spawn small spherical eggs of 0.75–0.80 mm in diameter (mean 0.78, CV = 3.6%) with several oil droplets and go through eight…
Jan Karol Chodkiewicz (1686–1712) – szkic biograficzny młodego magnata
2021
Regulation of the proapoptotic functions of prostate apoptosis response-4 (Par-4) by casein kinase 2 in prostate cancer cells
2013
International audience; The proapoptotic protein, prostate apoptosis response-4 (Par-4), acts as a tumor suppressor in prostate cancer cells. The serine/threonine kinase casein kinase 2 (CK2) has a well-reported role in prostate cancer resistance to apoptotic agents or anticancer drugs. However, the mechanistic understanding on how CK2 supports survival is far from complete. In this work, we demonstrate both in rat and humans that (i) Par-4 is a new substrate of the survival kinase CK2 and (ii) phosphorylation by CK2 impairs Par-4 proapoptotic functions. We also unravel different levels of CK2-dependent regulation of Par-4 between species. In rats, the phosphorylation by CK2 at the major si…
2-sulfonyliminodihydropyrimidines: a novel class of analgesic compounds.
2008
A series of 2-sulfonyliminodihydropyrimidine derivatives have been synthesized and evaluated in vivo for their antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities. The results were compared with that of acetyl salicylic acid. Compounds 6Ab-d and 6Be displayed an interesting analgesic profile in the acetic acid-induced abdominal contractions test. Based on the results of the carrageenan-hind paw edema test, compound 6Af showed potential anti-inflammatory activity.
Historyczny rozwój katolickiego obrazu Marcina Lutra
2018
Współczesne kierunki rzymskokatolickiego myślenia o Lutrze dobrze streszczają historycznie wyważone i dogmatycznie pogłębione opinie ostatnich papieży: Jana Pawła II, Benedykta XVI i Franciszka. Idąc za tekstami uzgodnień Komisji luterańsko-katolickiej na forum światowym, ekumenicznie otwarci papieże potrafią dostrzec w Marcinie Lutrze człowieka głęboko religijnego, świadka Ewangelii, którego myśl t…
