Learners’ identifies at stake: Digital identity texts in the ELF classroom

2018

Author/s María Dolores García-Pastor GIEL – Universitat de València, Spain   ABSTRACT This paper focuses on the study of identity in digital identity texts produced by English as a foreign language (EFL) learners within a specific subject of the Teacher in Primary Education (English) degree at a Spanish university. To this end, 51 digital identity texts were analysed following a “positioning perspective”, which views identity in terms of “reflexive” and “interactive” positions (Davies & Harré 1990). Results show that learners constructed non-unitary identities whose subject positions were often contradictory. They also associated certain positions with silencing identities, transition ident…

Encapsulació i estructura informativa en el debat parlamentari. Una anàlisi contrastiva (català – espanyol – anglès)

2016

Parliamentary debate (PD) as a specific genre of parliamentary discourse exhibits a hybrid nature: part oral and part written discourse. It is performed orally, but planned ahead and formal. From the point of view of lexical cohesion, encapsulation by means of abstract and unspecific nouns (e.g. factor reason) is an indicator of the informative density and the underlying written natureof PD.With the tools provided by Discourse Analysis and Cognitive Linguistics, this paper aims at describing and characterizing cross-linguistically lexical encapsulation’s potential to define the information struc-ture of PD. In this regard, encapsulation is analyzed in relation to the notions of topic and fo…

Edición anotada / The burlesque Danae by Pedro Silvestre. An annotated edition

2017

Abstract:We offer in this paper…

Perseo en la Comedia tardobarroca: Ignacio Ferrera y Pasqual

2015

Perseus in the late baroque comedy: Ignacio Ferrera y PasqualAbstract: Among the genres that recreated the m…

2017

After a brief presentation describing the main traits of the literary Romanian exile, this article aims to reveal some aspects of Matei Vişniec’s poetical originality, a Romanian francophone writer who defines himself as a «lucky exiled man». The poem we’ve chosen, «At the table with Marx» («La masă cu Marx»), involves the main line of the book with the same title that was published in Romania in 2011. His explicitly political regard relates him to another text that circulated as an anti-communist manifesto during the previous years of the communist dictature fall: the well-known poem entitled «The sailing ship» («Corabia»). A parable of complicity and colective guiltiness, «At the table wi…

Departing from some texts by Jesús Moncada, Quim Mon…

In 2019 Michele Mari publishes a second edition of th…

2012

This article focuses on two non-fiction works by Native American author N. Scott Momaday: his 1969 historical memoir The Way to Rainy Mountain and his essay collection The Man Made of Words. It specifically tackles performative conceptions of language in the Kiowa storytelling tradition, where words are experienced as speech acts that have the power to intervene in surrounding realities. Taking into account 20th century ethno-cultural and linguistic policies in the United States, the article also reflects on the role indigenous languages may play in contemporary Native American Literature, which has most often been written in English.

2019

This paper analyzes the semantic properties of the Spanish adverb más o menos 'about, more or less'. This adverb has been conceived as an approximative adverb, similarly to other, more prototypical forms, like almost or barely. Nevertheless, the propositional implications of almost and barely do not arise in más o menos, due to its particulary vague status. While almost and barely present a proximity-polarity pattern, más o menos implies an inconsistency of presuppositions, yielding differing readings. For this reason, I classify adverbs like más o menos as approximators, in opposition to adverbs like almost and barely, which have been classified as approximatives. Semantically, both types …
