Design and implementation of a portable fNIRS embedded system

2015

We report on the design, development and operation of a portable, low cost, battery-operated, multi-channel, functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy embedded system, hosting up to 64 optical sources and 128 Silicon PhotoMultiplier optical detectors. The system is realized as a scalable architecture, whose elementary leaf consists of a probe board provided with 16 SiPMs, 4 couples of bi-color LED, and a temperature sensor, built on a flexible stand. The hardware structure is very versatile because it is possible to handle both the switching time of the LED and the acquisition of the photodetectors, via an ARM based microcontroller.

Time calibration of the ANTARES neutrino telescope

2011

The ANTARES deep-sea neutrino telescope comprises a three-dimensional array of photomultipliers to detect the Cherenkov light induced by upgoing relativistic charged particles originating from neutrino interactions in the vicinity of the detector. The large scattering length of light in the deep sea facilitates an angular resolution of a few tenths of a degree for neutrino energies exceeding 10 TeV. In order to achieve this optimal performance, the time calibration procedures should ensure a relative time calibration between the photomultipliers at the level of ~1 ns. The methods developed to attain this level of precision are described.

ANTARES: The first undersea neutrino telescope

2011

The ANTARES Neutrino Telescope was completed in May 2008 and is the first operational Neutrino Telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. The main purpose of the detector is to perform neutrino astronomy and the apparatus also offers facilities for marine and Earth sciences. This paper describes the design, the construction and the installation of the telescope in the deep sea, offshore from Toulon in France. An illustration of the detector performance is given. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Time Calibration System of KM3NeT: The Laser Beacon and the Nanobeacon

2015

The KM3NeT collaboration has started the construction of a deep sea neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean with an instrumented volume of several cubic kilometers. The objective of the KM3NeT telescope is to observe cosmic neutrinos. For this, the detector will consist of a tri-dimensional array of optical modules, each one composed of a pressure resistant glass sphere housing 31 small area photomultipliers. An important element of the KM3NeT detector is the system for the relative time calibration between optical modules with a precision of about 1 ns. The system comprises two independent devices: a nanobeacon inside each optical module for calibration of optical modules in the same verti…

Time of flight measurements based on FPGA using a breast dedicated PET

2014

In this work the implementation of a Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) using a Nutt delay line FPGA-based and applied on a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) device is going to be presented in order to check the system’s suitability for Time of Flight (TOF) measurements. In recent years, FPGAs have shown great advantages for precise time measurements in PET. The architecture employed for these measurements is described in detail. The system developed was tested on a dedicated breast PET prototype, composed of LYSO crystals and Positive Sensitive Photomultipliers (PSPMTs). Two distinct experiments were carried out for this purpose. In the first test, system linearity was evaluated in order to …

Charge reconstruction in large-area photomultipliers

2018

Large-area PhotoMultiplier Tubes (PMT) allow to efficiently instrument Liquid Scintillator (LS) neutrino detectors, where large target masses are pivotal to compensate for neutrinos' extremely elusive nature. Depending on the detector light yield, several scintillation photons stemming from the same neutrino interaction are likely to hit a single PMT in a few tens/hundreds of nanoseconds, resulting in several photoelectrons (PEs) to pile-up at the PMT anode. In such scenario, the signal generated by each PE is entangled to the others, and an accurate PMT charge reconstruction becomes challenging. This manuscript describes an experimental method able to address the PMT charge reconstruction …

Operation and first results of the NEXT-DEMO prototype using a silicon photomultiplier tracking array

2013

NEXT-DEMO is a high-pressure xenon gas TPC which acts as a technological test-bed and demonstrator for the NEXT-100 neutrinoless double beta decay experiment. In its current configuration the apparatus fully implements the NEXT-100 design concept. This is an asymmetric TPC, with an energy plane made of photomultipliers and a tracking plane made of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) coated with TPB. The detector in this new configuration has been used to reconstruct the characteristic signature of electrons in dense gas, demonstrating the ability to identify the MIP and "blob" regions. Moreover, the SiPM tracking plane allows for the definition of a large fiducial region in which an excellent e…

Silicon Photomultipliers Signal-to-Noise Ratio in the Continuous Wave Regime

2014

 Abstract— We report on Signal-to-Noise Ratio measurements carried out, in the continuous wave regime, at different bias voltages, frequencies and temperatures, on a class of silicon photomultipliers fabricated in planar technology on silicon p- type substrate. Signal-to-Noise Ratio has been measured as the ratio of the photogenerated current, filtered and averaged by a lock-in amplifier, and the Root Mean Square deviation of the same current. The measured noise takes into account the shot noise, resulting from the photocurrent and the dark current. We have also performed a comparison between our SiPMs and a photomultiplier tube in terms of Signal-to-Noise Ratio, as a function of the tempe…

Responsivity measurements of N-on-P and P-on-N silicon photomultipliers in the continuous wave regime

2013

We report the electrical and optical comparison, in continuous wave regime, of two novel classes of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) fabricated in planar technology on silicon P-type and N-type substrate respectively. Responsivity measurements have been performed with an incident optical power from tenths of picowatts to hundreds of nanowatts and on a broad spectrum, ranging from ultraviolet to near infrared (340-820 nm). For both classes of investigated SiPMs, responsivity shows flat response versus the optical incident power, when a preset overvoltage and wavelength is applied . More in detail, this linear behavior extends up to about 10 nW for lower overvoltages, while a shrink is observ…

Advanced Hardware and Software for the Upgrade of Mirror/Prisma Monochromator SPM-2 (Carl Zeiss Jena) for the Measurements of Basic Spectroscopic Pro…

2021

Today's digital electronics and fast computers allow the efficiently processing of large volumes of spectroscopic information, which means the opportunity to reuse and upgrade monochromator with sophisticated optical and mechanical systems being designed and used in the middle of the last century. Particular interest is towards high-resolution prism monochromator. We used such an approach to computerize manual operations of universal mirror monochromator SPM-2, which has changeable quartz, glass, NaCl and KBr crystal prisms. SPM-2 was produced by VEB Carl Zeiss JENA in the early sixties of the last century (in former GDR), and its advanced features were widely used [1]. The current interest…
