The fast photon detection system of COMPASS RICH-1

2007

Abstract A fast photon detection system has been built for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1, the large size gaseous RICH detector in use at the COMPASS Experiment at the CERN SPS since 2001. The photon detectors of the central region have been replaced by a new system based on multi-anode photomultipliers coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes and a fast readout electronics system, while in the outer region the existing MWPCs with CsI photocathodes have been equipped with a new readout system, based on the APV chip. RICH-1 has been successfully operated in its upgraded version during the 2006 run. We report on the upgrade design and construction, and on the preliminary characteriza…

A laser-based system for a fast and accurate measurement of gain and linearity of photomultipliers

2018

This paper describes a method for the measurement of gain and linearity of photomultipliers (PMTs). Gain and linearity are two fundamental parameters to use properly a PMT in several physics experiments. In the developed system light is laser generated and adressed to the PMT through a set of optical fibers. The data acquisition system consists in a commercial 16 channel digitizer coupled to a custom front-end board. With the chosen digitizer the system is scalable to test up to 16 PMTs, with the aid of a light distribution system and a multi-channel version of the front-end board. Data analysis is performed by a custom acquisition software. A 1.5» Hamamatsu PMT is used to validate the syst…

The PANDA DIRC Detectors at FAIR

2017

The PANDA detector at the international accelerator Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe (FAIR) addresses fundamental questions of hadron physics. An excellent hadronic particle identification (PID) will be accomplished by two DIRC (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light) counters in the target spectrometer. The design for the barrel region covering polar angles between 22 deg. to 140 deg. is based on the successful BABAR DIRC with several key improvements, such as fast photon timing and a compact imaging region. The novel Endcap Disc DIRC will cover the smaller forward angles between 5 deg. (10 deg.) to 22 deg. in the vertical (horizontal) direction. Both DIRC coun…

Lowering the radioactivity of the photomultiplier tubes for the XENON1T dark matter experiment

2015

The low-background, VUV-sensitive 3-inch diameter photomultiplier tube R11410 has been developed by Hamamatsu for dark matter direct detection experiments using liquid xenon as the target material. We present the results from the joint effort between the XENON collaboration and the Hamamatsu company to produce a highly radio-pure photosensor (version R11410-21) for the XENON1T dark matter experiment. After introducing the photosensor and its components, we show the methods and results of the radioactive contamination measurements of the individual materials employed in the photomultiplier production. We then discuss the adopted strategies to reduce the radioactivity of the various PMT versi…

The liquid-argon scintillation pulseshape in DEAP-3600

2020

AbstractDEAP-3600 is a liquid-argon scintillation detector looking for dark matter. Scintillation events in the liquid argon (LAr) are registered by 255 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), and pulseshape discrimination (PSD) is used to suppress electromagnetic background events. The excellent PSD performance of LAr makes it a viable target for dark matter searches, and the LAr scintillation pulseshape discussed here is the basis of PSD. The observed pulseshape is a combination of LAr scintillation physics with detector effects. We present a model for the pulseshape of electromagnetic background events in the energy region of interest for dark matter searches. The model is composed of (a) LAr scin…

Time imaging reconstruction for the PANDA Barrel DIRC

2020

The innovative Barrel DIRC (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light) counter will provide hadronic particle identification (PID) in the central region of the PANDA experiment at the new Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), Darmstadt, Germany. This detector is designed to separate charged pions and kaons with at least 3 standard deviations for momenta up to 3.5 GeV/c, covering the polar angle range of 22$^{\circ}$-140$^{\circ}$. An array of microchannel plate photomultiplier tubes is used to detect the location and arrival time of the Cherenkov photons with a position resolution of 2 mm and time precision of about 100 ps. The time imaging reconstruction has been develop…

Measurement of the atmospheric muon flux with a 4 GeV threshold in the ANTARES neutrino telescope

2010

A new method for the measurement of the muon flux in the deep-sea ANTARES neutrino telescope and its dependence on the depth is presented. The method is based on the observation of coincidence signals in adjacent storeys of the detector. This yields an energy threshold of about 4 GeV. The main sources of optical background are the decay of 40K and the bioluminescence in the sea water. The 40K background is used to calibrate the efficiency of the photo-multiplier tubes.

Transmission of light in deep sea water at the site of the Antares neutrino telescope

2005

The ANTARES neutrino telescope is a large photomultiplier array designed to detect neutrino-induced upward-going muons by their Cherenkov radiation. Understanding the absorption and scattering of light in the deep Mediterranean is fundamental to optimising the design and performance of the detector. This paper presents measurements of blue and UV light transmission at the ANTARES site taken between 1997 and 2000. The derived values for the scattering length and the angular distribution of particulate scattering were found to be highly correlated, and results are therefore presented in terms of an absorption length lambda_abs and an effective scattering length lambda_sct^eff. The values for …

Comments on 'SPICE Model of Photomultiplier Tube Under Different Bias Conditions'

2021

[EN] The paper ¿SPICE Model of Photomultiplier Tube Under Different Bias Conditions¿ is commented. We revisit the mathematical formulation to compensate for some ambiguities in the original manuscript, and point out some inconsistencies in the results and reproducibility of the simulations, as well as in the optimized parameters originally obtained with the PSPICE simulation engine. All simulations are recalculated with the NGSPICE software using the corrected parameters and compared against the original figures. The reproducibility of our simulations is independently verified with PSPICE, as well as by numerically solving the analytical system of non-linear equations using Newton¿s method …

Operation of silicon photomultipliers as photosensors of liquid xenon detectors

2016

Silicon Photomultipliers as photosensors for liquid xenon detectors are an attractive alternative to photomultiplier tubes: liquid xenon detectors employed in low background experiments or compact Compton cameras can take advantage of the small sensor mass and dimensions, the larger light collection coming from a more packed tiling of the readout plane, and possibly a smaller cost per area. We investigate the operation in liquid xenon of samples developed by Ketek GmbH. To provide sensitivity to the liquid xenon scintillation light wavelength, 178 nm, the inactive entrance layer of the device has been thinned. The operation of such devices at temperatures as low as −100°C has been verified,…
