Optical Gating of Photosensitive Synthetic Ion Channels

2011

4-oxo-4-(pyren-4-ylmethoxy) butanoic acid is used as a photolabile protecting group to show the optical gating of nanofluidic devices based on synthetic ion channels. The inner surface of the channels is decorated with monolayers of photolabile hydrophobic molecules that can be removed by irradiation, which leads to the generation of hydrophilic groups. This process can be exploited in the UV-light-triggered permselective transport of ionic species in aqueous solution through the channels. The optical gating of a single conical nanochannel and multichannel polymeric membranes is characterised experimentally and theoretically by means of current-voltage and selective permeation measurements,…

Photosensitivity and second harmonic generation in chalcogenide arsenic sulfide poled glasses

2011

International audience; The present work investigates the photoinduced Second Harmonic Generation processes in thermally poled arsenic sulfide glasses. SHG Maker fringes patterns associated to SHG kinetic measurements about illumination and Raman spectroscopy have been conducted in order to bring new information which confirm the combined influence of charge carriers and mid-range glass structural modification on the poling and the photodarkening mechanisms.

Ultraviolet-induced paramagnetic centers and absorption changes in singlemode Ge-doped optical fibers

2009

We investigated the laser-energy-density dependence of absorption changes and paramagnetic centers induced by a cw Ar+ laser operating at 5.1 eV, in both unloaded and H-2-loaded single mode Ge-doped optical fibers. The induced absorption is measured in the blue and near ultraviolet spectral range by using the 3.1 eV photoluminescence, ascribed to Ge lone pair center (GLPC), as an in situ probe source. We find that the Ge (1) center (GeO4-) is induced upon UV exposure by electron trapping on GeO4 precursors, where the free electrons are most likely produced by ionization of GLPC. Ge (1) is responsible of optical transmission loss of the fiber in the investigated range. Hydrogen loading stron…

Genetic 3’UTR variation is associated with human pigmentation characteristics and sensitivity to sunlight

2017

Sunlight exposure induces signalling pathways leading to the activation of melanin synthesis and tanning response. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) can regulate the expression of genes involved in pigmentation pathways by binding to the complementary sequence in their 3'untranslated regions (3'UTRs). Therefore, 3'UTR SNPs are predicted to modify the ability of miRNAs to target genes, resulting in differential gene expression. In this study, we investigated the role in pigmentation and sun-sensitivity traits, as well as in melanoma susceptibility, of 38 different 3'UTR SNPs from 38 pigmentation-related genes. A total of 869 individuals of Spanish origin (526 melanoma cases and 343 controls) were analysed.…

Enzymatically catalyzed synthesis of photocrosslinkable oligophenols

2000

The HRP-catalyzed oligomerization of cinnamoyl-hydroquinone-ester and cinnamoyl-4-hydroxyanilide led to the formation of soluble polyphenols. The oligomers were synthexized in water/1,4-dioxane and in water/acetone mixtures and characterized by NMR, FTIR and SEC. Upon UV treatment of the homogenoes films the polyphenols were crosslinked due to [2+2]-cycloadditions of the cinnamoyl functions.

Photosensitive properties of composite films based on copper chloride in polymer matrix

2013

The composite films based on PMMA and CuCl2 were prepared. Transmission spectra of the films before and after illumination by different laser lines (405, 448, 456 nm) were measured. The reversible character of the composite photosensitivity was fixed. The phenomenon of direct surface relief formation after laser beam illumination of composite films was described. The holographic gratings were recorded by different exposure (200 – 500 J/cm2) in the films with different concentration (8 and 20 wt. %) of copper salt. The film sensitivity dependence on polymer molecular weight was studied. Surface relief of the gratings was measured by AFM.

Synthesis and radical polymerization of novel methacrylates with mesoionic 6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyrimidin-3-ium-4-olates as photosensitive components

2001

New polymerizable mesoionic 6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyrimidin-3-ium-4-olates 5a-f have been synthesized using tosylated 2-hydroxymethyl methacrylate and various thioureas and malonic acids. Radical polymerization of the mesoionic derivatives 5a, c, d, e with AIBN as initiator resulted in soluble polymers, which were used for the preparation of photosensitive films.

Photosensitivity of SiO2–Al and SiO2–Na glasses under ArF (193 nm) laser

2009

Abstract Photosensitivity of SiO 2 –Al and SiO 2 –Na glass samples was probed by means of the induced optical absorption and luminescence as well as by electron spin-resonance (ESR) after irradiation with excimer-laser photons (ArF, 193 nm). Permanent visible darkening in the case of SiO 2 –Al and transient, life time about one hour, visible darkening in the case of SiO 2 –Na was found under irradiation at 290 K. No darkening was observed at 80 K for either kind of material. This investigation is dedicated to revealing the electronic processes responsible for photosensitivity at 290 and 80 K. The photosensitivity of both materials is related to impurity defects excited directly in the case …

Radiation effects on silica-based preforms and optical fibers-I: Experimental study with canonical samples

2008

International audience; Prototype samples of preforms and associated fibers have been designed and fabricated through MCVD process to investigate the role of fluorine (F) and germanium (Ge) doping elements on the radiation sensitivity of silica-based glasses. We characterized the behaviors of these canonical samples before, during and after 10 keV X-ray irradiation through several spectroscopic techniques, to obtain global information (in situ absorption measurements, electron paramagnetic resonance) or spatially-resolved information (confocal microscopy, absorption and luminescence on preform). These tests showed that, for the Ge-doped fiber and in the 300–900 nm range, the radiation-induc…

Hydrogen-Related Paramagnetic Centers in Ge-Doped Sol-Gel Silica Induced by γ-Ray Irradiation

2006

We have studied the generation mechanisms of H(II) paramagnetic centers in Ge-doped silica by investigating up to 104 mol ppm sol-gel Ge-doped silica materials. We have considered materials with the same concentrations of Ge but that are produced by two different densification routes that give rise to different concentrations of Ge-related oxygen deficient centers (GeODC(II)). These centers are characterized by an optical absorption band at ∼5.2 eV (B2 β band) and two related emissions at ∼3.2 eV and ∼4.3 eV. The GeODC(II) content was estimated by absorption and emission measurements. The H(II) centers were induced by room temperature γ-ray irradiation and their concentration was determined…
