Physical Education (PE) generally, and Chilean one, specifically, is in the middle of an identity crisis. There is a vision of the body as a production object. This vision has been generated in the light of social Darwinism, and at the same time there are other more conciliatory and global approaches. This investigation tries, with a holistic approach based on participating observation, to look into the practices carried out in relation to PE in schools in the Chilean context. Burning the Book: A Biographical Study of a Pedagogically Inspired Identity Crisis in Physical Education

This paper focuses upon a fateful moment in the life of a Spanish student of physical education called Guillem (a pseudonym) in which the reading of a particular text as part of his course requirements instigated a powerful identity crisis. Biographical data are provided to contextualize the crisis and the impact it had on the life of this student. Next, the strategies used by Guillem to resolve his identity crisis are considered and the problems of self-change are highlighted. Finally, attention is given to the implications of this case for those who seek to engage in critical forms of pedagogy.

The aim of the present study is to determine the treatment given to the pictures of the body and physical activity in Physical Education’s textbooks for Primary School. The sample consists of 997 images of nine textbooks published by five publishers. A descriptive analysis was performed on the variables gender, age, race, and somatotype that refer to the body, and type, scope, space, and level of practice referred to physical activity. Results show that stereotypes still remain regarding the body and physical activity, emphasizing the male, white, thin and youth body that practices sports and motor skills. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar las imágenes que aparecen en los libros de texto de Educación Física en el tercer ciclo de Educación Primaria y comprobar si los estereotipos con respecto al género y la raza han sido eliminados en sus contenidos. Se realiza un estudio descriptivo que utiliza el análisis de contenido como técnica central de la investigación. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo diseñar una herramienta, a partir de dos sistemas de categorías validados previamente, que pudiera analizar las imágenes impresas en los libros de texto de Educación Física (EF) en la etapa de Educación Primaria. Para ello se desarrolló SAIMEF (Sistema de Análisis de Imágenes en Educación Física), una aplicación php diseñada ad hoc, que facilita el acceso al sistema y minimiza los errores de análisis.
