Lipoprotein Subfractions in Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity: Clinical Significance and Therapeutic Approaches
2013
Small, dense low density lipoprotein (sdLDL) represents an emerging cardiovascular risk factor, since these particles can be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) independently of established risk factors, including plasma lipids. Obese subjects frequently have atherogenic dyslipidaemia, including elevated sdLDL levels, in addition to elevated triglycerides (TG), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and apolipoprotein-B, as well as decreased high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. Obesity-related co-morbidities, such as metabolic syndrome (MetS) are also characterized by dyslipidaemia. Therefore, agents that favourably modulate LDL subclasses may be of clinical value in t…
Obesity and diabetes-Not only a simple link between two epidemics
2018
Summary Diabetes (DM) as well as obesity, due to their increasing incidence, were recognized as epidemic by the World Health Organization. Obesity is involved not only in the aetiopathogenesis of the most common worldwide type of DM—type 2 diabetes—but also in the development of its complications. There is also increasing scientific evidence regarding the role of obesity and overweight in type 1 diabetes. Weight gain may be considered as a complication of insulin treatment but also reveals significant pathophysiological impact on various stages of the disease. Another very important aspect related to DM as well as obesity is the microbiome, which is highly variable. The function of the gut …
Oligonucleotide-capped nanoporous anodic alumina biosensor as diagnostic tool for rapid and accurate detection of Candida auris in clinical samples.
2021
[EN] Candida auris has arisen as an important multidrug-resistant fungus because of several nosocomial outbreaks and elevated rates of mortality. Accurate and rapid diagnosis of C. auris is highly desired; nevertheless, current methods often present severe limitations and produce misidentification. Herein a sensitive, selective, and time-competitive biosensor based on oligonucleotide-gated nanomaterials for effective detection of C. auris is presented. In the proposed design, a nanoporous anodic alumina scaffold is filled with the fluorescent indicator rhodamine B and the pores blocked with different oligonucleotides capable of specifically recognize C. auris genomic DNA. Gate opening modul…
Onihomikožu epidemioloģija Latvijā
2015
Characteristics of day hospitalized melanoma patients
2022
Melanoma ir ļaundabīgs ādas audzējs, kam piemīt tendence ātri metastāzēties. Kopumā retrospektīvajā pētījumā iekļauti 325 melanomas pacienti, kas ārstējušies Rīgas Austrumu klīniskās universitātes slimnīcas Latvijas Onkoloģijas centra dienas stacionārā laika posmā no 2017. līdz 2021.gadam. Ats…
"Kun tietotekniikkaa hyödynnetään pedagogiikka edellä, päästään syvään oppimiseen" : opetusteknologia Helsingin Sanomien mielipidekirjoituksissa vuos…
2016
Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kartoittaa opetusteknologiasta käytyä julkista keskustelua Helsingin Sanomien mielipidepalstalla vuosina 2010-2015. Aihetta lähestyttiin selvittämällä, mistä aihepiireistä käsin opetusteknologiaa Helsingin Sanomien mielipidepalstalla käsiteltiin. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin, kuinka opetusteknologia mielipidekirjoituksissa asemoitui. Tutkimuksen aineistona oli 116 mielipidekirjoitusta ja 34 lehtiartikkelia. Aineisto analysoitiin hyödyntämällä kvalitatiivisen ja kvantitatiivisen sisällönanalyysin menetelmiä. Tutkimuksen tulokset muodostuivat kahdesta osiosta: opetusteknologiaan liittyvien aihepiirien kategorisoinnista sekä mielipidekirjoitusten jakautumisesta ase…
Epidemiology, clinical manifestations, risk-reduction and treatment strategies of jaw osteonecrosis in cancer patients exposed to antiresorptive agen…
2014
Osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ) is an adverse side event of bisphosphonates and denosumab, antiresorptive agents that effectively reduce the incidence of skeletal-related events in patients with metastatic bone cancer and multiple myeloma. Available data suggest that 0–27.5% of individuals exposed to antiresorptive agents can develop ONJ. There is increasing evidence that avoidance of surgical trauma and infection to the jawbones can minimize the risk of ONJ, but there are still a significant number of individuals who develop ONJ in the absence of these risk factors. Bone necrosis is almost irreversible and there is no definitive cure for ONJ with the exclusion, in certain cases, of surgica…

UV-B exposure causes DNA damage and changes in protein expression in northern pike (Esox lucius) posthatched embryos.
2012
The ongoing anthropogenically caused ozone depletion and climate change has increased the amount of biologically harmful UV-B radiation, which is detrimental to fish in embryonal stages. The effects of UV-B radiation on the levels and locations of DNA damage manifested as cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs), heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and p53 protein in newly hatched embryos of pike were examined. Pike larvae were exposed in the laboratory to current and enhanced doses of UV-B radiation. UV-B exposure caused the formation of CPDs in a fluence rate-dependent manner, and the CPDs were found deeper in the tissues with increasing fluence rates. UV-B radiation induced HSP70 in epidermis, and…
