Schemata, Acculturation, and Cognition : Expatriates in Japan's Software Industry
2016
This multiple case based empirical study expands the knowledge around North American software and IT workers in Japan as well as the expatriate literature and discussion of cognitive schemata in cross cultural settings. The study includes eleven individuals, nine of them in software. Evidence of selection, rejection, and adjustment of cognitive schemata found in Japan's business world is presented. Changes in schemata drive cultural adjustment and acculturation. North American software and IT workers in Japan must maneuver through unfamiliar and often complex schemata to motivate, lead, manipulate, and communicate with coworkers and partners and thereby gain success.
Utilizing online serious games to facilitate distributed requirements elicitation
2015
Online serious games are used to facilitate distributed requirements elicitation.Interactive games enhance collaboration and communication between project members.Serious games raise individuals' confidence to engage in requirements elicitation.Using serious games can improve both quality and quantity of software requirements.Serious games specially enhance the performance of less-experienced stakeholders. Requirements elicitation is one of the most important and challenging activities in software development projects. A variety of challenges related to requirements elicitation are reported in the literature, of which the lack of proper communication and knowledge transfer between software …
Internet Adoption at the User Level: Empirical Evidence from The Gambia
2014
The unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) are used to investigate technology adoption. However, its application in Sub-Saharan Africa is rare and barely extended to the validation phase. In this paper, we introduce six new moderating factors for UTAUT core determinants and two other direct determinants of Internet adoption. The objective of this approach is to identify relevant elements of Internet adoption at the user level in The Gambia. Moderating factors are interacting terms used when the relationship between independent and dependent variable is weak, inconsistent or non-existent. A case study research design was employed and the data were gathered in Autumn of 20…
Looking for Peace of Mind? Manage your (Technical) Debt : An Exploratory Field Study
2017
Background: In the last two decades Technical Debt (TD) has received a considerable amount of attention from software engineering research and practice. Recently, a small group of studies suggests that, in addition to its technical and economic consequences, TD can affect developers’ psychological states and morale. However, until now there has been a lack of empirical research clarifying such influences. Aims: In this study, we aim at taking the first step in filling this gap by investigating the potential impacts of TD and its management on developers’ morale. Method: Drawing from previous literature on morale, we decided to explore the influence of TD and its management on three dimensio…
How news affect the trading behavior of different categories of investors in a financial market
2015
We investigate the trading behavior of a large set of single investors trading the highly liquid Nokia stock over the period 2003-2008 with the aim of determining the relative role of endogenous and exogenous factors that may affect their behavior. As endogenous factors we consider returns and volatility, whereas the exogenous factors we use are the total daily number of news and a semantic variable based on a sentiment analysis of news. Linear regression and partial correlation analysis of data show that different categories of investors are differently correlated to these factors. Governmental and non profit organizations are weakly sensitive to news and returns or volatility, and, typica…
Emerging and Traditional Donors in the ‘Post-Busan’ Context: Assessing Brazil’s and Finland’s Cooperation Practices in Mozambique
2015
At the same time as the ‘emerging donors’ have gained relevance in the development cooperation system, they have also challenged established principles of aid. This article compares Brazil's and Finland's development cooperation practices in the light of recent global tendencies in the aid architecture. Based on empirical research carried out in Mozambique, Brazil, and Finland, the article gives a detailed review of the institutional and historical settings of each bilateral cooperation. The authors then analyse how two central concepts reinforced during the Busan High Level Forum have been put into practice by a ‘new emerging’ and a ‘traditional Nordic’ donor. For ‘development effectivenes…

Changing people’s attitudes and beliefs toward driving through floodwaters : Evaluation of a video infographic
2018
Abstract Despite awareness of campaigns such as ‘Turn Around, Don’t Drown’ and the Australian state of Queensland’s ‘If It’s Flooded, Forget It’, people continue to drive through floodwaters, causing loss of life, risk to rescuers, and damage to vehicles. The aim of this study was to develop a video infographic that highlights the dangers of driving through floodwaters and provide safety tips to reduce the risk, and to evaluate its effectiveness in changing the beliefs and intentions of Australian adults toward this risky driving behaviour. This study adopted an online three-wave non-controlled pretest–posttest design. Australian licensed drivers (N = 201, male = 41, female = 160; Mage = 34…
Jaunākā pirmsskolas vecuma bērnu intereses sekmēšana rokdarbos
2017
Pētījuma ‘’Jaunākā pirmsskolas vecuma bērnu intereses sekmēšana rokdarbos’’ mērķis ir teorētiski un praktiski izzināt jaunākā pirmsskolas vecuma bērnu intereses sekmēšanas iespējas rokdarbos. Pētījuma pirmajā nodaļā - dažādu pedagogu, psihologu ( J. A. Students, J. Arājs, A. Kovaļovs, L. Žukovs, A. Špona, A. Sorokina, R. Baltušīte, A. Šteinberga u.c.) autoru atziņas par interesēm un to attīstību pirmsskolas vecumā, aprakstīti rokdarbi, pedagogu (A.Ozoliņa,K. Cīrulis, L. Priede, V.Dirnēna, V. Zelmenis u.c.) autoru atziņas par rokdarbiem, to nozīmi bērna vispusīgai attīstībai. Aprakstīts ir autoru viedoklis par skolotāja, kā intereses par rokdarbiem sekmētāja, nozīmi bērna attīstības veicināš…
Sensoro spēju attīstība 4-5 gadus veciem bērniem rotaļās
2018
Kvalifikācijas darba temats: Sensoro spēju attīstība 4-5 gadus veciem bērniem rotaļās. Darba autore: Jeļena Orlova. Zinātniskā vadītāja: Docente, Dr. paed. Ingūna Lāce. Pētījums izstrādāts ar mērķi teorētiski pētīt un empīriski pamatot rotaļu izmantošanas iespējas 4-5 gadus vecu bērnu sensoro spēju attīstības sekmēšanai. Lai sasniegtu doto mērķi, darba autore teorētiski pētījusi sensoro spēju jēdzienu un attīstības likumsakarības, sensoro spēju nozīmi bērna personības attīstībā kopumā, kā arī raksturojusi 4-5 gadu vecu bērnu attīstību pētījuma kontekstā. Teorētiskās daļas izstrādē izmantoti galvenokārt tādu zinātnieku pētījumi kā D. Dzintare un I. Stangaine (2005), K. Erikosons (Ericsson, 1…
