Dense Mosi2 produced by reactive flash sintering: Control of Mo/Si agglomerates prepared by high-energy ball milling
2011
The objective of this work is to determine the influence of the agglomeration state of the MA mixture on the microstructure and the chemical composition of SPS end-products. In order to produce MoSi2 with a microstructure and a density perfectly controlled via reactive sintering implying an SHS reaction, the characteristics of Mo/Si mechanically activated (MA) powder mixtures were investigated. Indeed, the MA powders have been characterized in terms of their surface specific area, size, phase composition and microstructure. The high-energy milling allows the formation of agglomerates (0.8 to 800 μm) composed of nanometric crystallites of molybdenum and silicon, as a consequence of a continu…
Residual crystalline silicon phase in silicon-rich-oxide films subjected to high temperature annealing
2002
Structural properties of silicon rich oxide films (SRO) have been investigated by means of micro-Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The layers were deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition using different SiH4/O2 gas mixtures. The Raman spectra of the as-deposited SRO films are dominated by a broad band in the region 400-500 cm-1 typical of a highly disordered silicon network. After annealing at temperatures above 1000°C in N2, the formation of silicon nanocrystals is observed both in the Raman spectra and in the TEM images. However, most of the precipitated silicon does not crystallize and assumes an amorphous microstructure. © 2002 The Electrochem…
Thermal and plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition of SiO2 using commercial silicon precursors
2014
In this paper, we report ALD deposition of silicon dioxide using either thermal or plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD). Several aminosilanes with differing structures and reactivity were used as silicon precursors in R&D single wafer ALD tools. One of the precursors was also tested on pilot scale batch ALD using O3 as oxidant and with substrates measuring 150 × 400 mm. The SiO2 film deposition rate was greatly dependent on the precursors used, highest values being 1.5-2.0 Å/cycle at 30-200°C for one precursor with an O2 plasma. According to time-of-flight-elastic recoil detection analysis measurements carbon and nitrogen impurities were relatively low, but hydrogen content i…

Steady state and transient thermal-hydraulic characterization of full-scale ITER divertor plasma facing components
2008
Abstract In the frame of the activities related to ITER divertor R&D, ENEA CR Brasimone was in charge by EFDA (European Fusion Development Agreement) to investigate the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of the full-scale divertor plasma facing components, i.e. the outer vertical target, the inner vertical target and the dome-liner, both in steady state and during draining and drying transient. The investigation was performed by means of both experimental test campaigns performed at ENEA CR Brasimone and theoretical simulation developed in RELAP5 Mod.3.3 environment at the Department of Nuclear Engineering of the University of Palermo (DIN). This paper presents the achieved experimental results fo…
Stochastic resonance in a metal-oxide memristive device
2021
Abstract The stochastic resonance phenomenon has been studied experimentally and theoretically for a state-of-art metal-oxide memristive device based on yttria-stabilized zirconium dioxide and tantalum pentoxide, which exhibits bipolar filamentary resistive switching of anionic type. The effect of white Gaussian noise superimposed on the sub-threshold sinusoidal driving signal is analyzed through the time series statistics of the resistive switching parameters, the spectral response to a periodic perturbation and the signal-to-noise ratio at the output of the nonlinear system. The stabilized resistive switching and the increased memristance response are revealed in the observed regularities…
Biomaterial Surface Hydrophobicity-Mediated Serum Protein Adsorption and Immune Responses.
2019
The nature of the protein corona forming on biomaterial surfaces can affect the performance of implanted devices. This study investigated the role of surface chemistry and wettability on human serum-derived protein corona formation on biomaterial surfaces and the subsequent effects on the cellular innate immune response. Plasma polymerization, a substrate-independent technique, was employed to create nanothin coatings with four specific chemical functionalities and a spectrum of surface charges and wettability. The amount and type of protein adsorbed was strongly influenced by surface chemistry and wettability but did not show any dependence on surface charge. An enhanced adsorption of the …
Microanalytical characterization of decorations in handmade ancient floor tiles using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-O…
2013
In this study a total of 114 glazed decorations of 42 ceramic floor tiles, manufactured in Sicily fromthe 16th to 19 the 21th AD, were investigated. The micro sampling method, proposed by us, using a cotton swab soaked in hydrofluoric acid, includes advantages of high sensitivity, high selectivity, simplicity, speed, not expensive and can be considered non-destructive because the point of sampling remains invisible to the human eye. ICP-OES technique was used in this study. Twenty-four elements (Al, As, B, Be, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Si, Sn, Ti, V and Zn) were determined in each colored enamel. Enameled decorations in Sicilian tiles were varied in tones an…
