Introduction to the Pontryagin Maximum Principle for Quantum Optimal Control

2021

Optimal Control Theory is a powerful mathematical tool, which has known a rapid development since the 1950s, mainly for engineering applications. More recently, it has become a widely used method to improve process performance in quantum technologies by means of highly efficient control of quantum dynamics. This tutorial aims at providing an introduction to key concepts of optimal control theory which is accessible to physicists and engineers working in quantum control or in related fields. The different mathematical results are introduced intuitively, before being rigorously stated. This tutorial describes modern aspects of optimal control theory, with a particular focus on the Pontryagin …

Optimal Local Routing Strategies for Community Structured Time Varying Communication Networks

2017

International audience; In time varying data communication networks (TVCN), traffic congestion, system utility maximization and network performance enhancement are the prominent issues. All these issues can be resolved either by optimizing the network structure or by selecting efficient routing approaches. In this paper, we focus on the design of a time varying network model and propose an algorithm to find efficient user route in this network. Centrality plays a very important role in finding congestion free routes. Indeed, the more a node is central, the more it can be congested by the flow coming from or going to its neighborhood. For that reason, classically, routes are chosen such that…

A Formal Passage From a System of Boltzmann Equations for Mixtures Towards a Vlasov-Euler System of Compressible Fluids

2019

A formal asymptotics leading from a system of Boltzmann equations for mixtures towards either Vlasov-Navier-Stokes or Vlasov-Stokes equations of incompressible fluids was established by the same authors and Etienne Bernard in: A Derivation of the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes Model for Aerosol Flows from Kinetic Theory Commun. Math. Sci., 15: 1703–1741 (2017) and A Derivation of the Vlasov-Stokes System for Aerosol Flows from the Kinetic Theory of Binary Gas Mixtures. KRM, 11: 43–69 (2018). With the same starting point but with a different scaling, we establish here a formal asymptotics leading to the Vlasov-Euler system of compressible fluids. Explicit formulas for the coupling terms are obtained i…

Numerical study of shock formation in the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation and dispersive regularizations

2013

The formation of singularities in solutions to the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (dKP) equation is studied numerically for different classes of initial data. The asymptotic behavior of the Fourier coefficients is used to quantitatively identify the critical time and location and the type of the singularity. The approach is first tested in detail in 1+1 dimensions for the known case of the Hopf equation, where it is shown that the break-up of the solution can be identified with prescribed accuracy. For dissipative regularizations of this shock formation as the Burgers' equation and for dispersive regularizations as the Korteweg-de Vries equation, the Fourier coefficients indicate as …

Hidden Strange Nonchaotic Attractors

2021

In this paper, it is found numerically that the previously found hidden chaotic attractors of the Rabinovich–Fabrikant system actually present the characteristics of strange nonchaotic attractors. For a range of the bifurcation parameter, the hidden attractor is manifestly fractal with aperiodic dynamics, and even the finite-time largest Lyapunov exponent, a measure of trajectory separation with nearby initial conditions, is negative. To verify these characteristics numerically, the finite-time Lyapunov exponents, ‘0-1’ test, power spectra density, and recurrence plot are used. Beside the considered hidden strange nonchaotic attractor, a self-excited chaotic attractor and a quasiperiodic at…

Scenario of the Birth of Hidden Attractors in the Chua Circuit

2017

Recently it was shown that in the dynamical model of Chua circuit both the classical selfexcited and hidden chaotic attractors can be found. In this paper the dynamics of the Chua circuit is revisited. The scenario of the chaotic dynamics development and the birth of selfexcited and hidden attractors is studied. It is shown a pitchfork bifurcation in which a pair of symmetric attractors coexists and merges into one symmetric attractor through an attractormerging bifurcation and a splitting of a single attractor into two attractors. The scenario relating the subcritical Hopf bifurcation near equilibrium points and the birth of hidden attractors is discussed.

Application of isotope-dilution laser ablation ICP-MS for direct determination of Pu concentrations in soils at pg g(-1) levels.

2003

The methods available for determination of environmental contamination by plutonium at ultra-trace levels require labor-consuming sample preparation including matrix removal and plutonium extraction in both nuclear spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. In this work, laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was applied for direct analysis of Pu in soil and sediment samples. Application of a LINA-Spark-Atomizer system (a modified laser ablation system providing high ablation rates) coupled with a sector-field ICP-MS resulted in detection limits as low as 3x10(-13) g g(-1) for Pu isotopes in soil samples containing uranium at a concentration of a few microg g(-1). …

Multielemental determination of trace mineral elements in seawater by dynamic reaction cell inductively coupled plasma- mass spectrometry after Al(OH…

2020

Abstract A simple method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of 12 trace mineral elements in seawater using, in some cases, several target isotopes (51V, 52Cr, 55Mn, 58,60Ni, 59Co, 63,65Cu, 64,66,68Zn, 75As, 78Se, 111,113Cd, 206,207,208Pb y 238U) in seawater. The method combined a simple and fast Al(OH)3 co-precipitation method, to pre-concentrate mineral elements and to separate them from the seawater matrix, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry using the dynamic reaction cell with NH3 gas to do quantitative determinations free from polyatomic interferences. The recoveries of trace elements after Al(OH)3 co-precipitation varies between 80% for 111Cd and 116% f…

Lead speciation in rainwater samples by modified fused silica capillaries coupled to a direct injection nebulizer (DIN) for sample introduction in IC…

2001

Lead speciation using modified silica capillaries for the introduction of liquid samples to a direct injection nebulizer of an inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometer is described and demonstrated. The fused silica capillaries were coated by covalently bonding a cation exchange active organic molecule to the activated capillary surface. The best results were obtained by introducing a bifunctional reagent in a prior step. In this case, a silane reagent was chosen which acted as a methacrylic acid group for further binding. The influence of the chemical modification of the surface of the sample capillary of the DIN on the selective retention of inorganic lead (Pb2+) and trieth…

Production of negative osmium ions by laser desorption and ionization.

2010

The interest to produce negative osmium ions is manifold in the realm of high-accuracy ion trap experiments: high-resolution nearly Doppler-free laser spectroscopy, antihydrogen formation in its ground state, and contributions to neutrino mass spectrometry. Production of these ions is generally accomplished by sputtering an Os sample with Cs(+) ions at tens of keV. Though this is a well-established method commonly used at accelerators, these kind of sources are quite demanding and tricky to operate. Therefore, the development of a more straightforward and cost effective production scheme will be of benefit for ion trap and other experiments. Such a scheme makes use of desorption and ionizat…
