Interaction between Longitudinal Shear and Transverse Bending in Prestressed Concrete Box Girders

In box girder bridges, the quantity and distribution of reinforcement to be put in concrete elements of sections can be evaluated only by considering the deformation of the cross section in addition to the longitudinal analysis of the static scheme, establishing the entire state of stress of box sections. This leads to a need to evaluate the interaction between internal forces obtained by the global analysis and the ones obtained by the local analysis of the cross sections. The frame effect implies the elastic deformation of slabs and webs, whereas eccentrically applied loads lead to cross-section distortion with the loss of the box shape. Neurovascular EGFL7 regulates adult neurogenesis in the subventricular zone and thereby affects olfactory perception

Adult neural stem cells reside in a specialized niche in the subventricular zone (SVZ). Throughout life they give rise to adult-born neurons in the olfactory bulb (OB), thus contributing to neural plasticity and pattern discrimination. Here, we show that the neurovascular protein EGFL7 is secreted by endothelial cells and neural stem cells (NSCs) of the SVZ to shape the vascular stem-cell niche. Loss of EGFL7 causes an accumulation of activated NSCs, which display enhanced activity and re-entry into the cell cycle. PSA-NCAM is expressed in immature, but not recently generated, neurons in the adult cat cerebral cortex layer II

Neuronal production persists during adulthood in the dentate gyrus and the olfactory bulb, where substantial numbers of immature neurons can be found. These cells can also be found in the paleocortex layer II of adult rodents, but in this case most of them have been generated during embryogenesis. Recent reports have described the presence of similar cells, with a wider distribution, in the cerebral cortex of adult cats and primates and have suggested that they may develop into interneurons. Motor cortical plasticity induced by motor learning through mental practice

Several investigations suggest that actual and mental actions trigger similar neural substrates. Current feeding behaviors contribute to the epidemic levels of obesity and diabetes observed in Europe and worldwide. Both the quantity and the quality of ingested food are incriminated. Together with other sensory modalities, olfaction is involved in the control of food intake. This lecture summarizes some recent results and ideas about interrelations between degradation and mechanical behaviour of polyolefins. Aspects of the heterogeneous nature of oxidative degradation in the solid state, the feedback mechanism in degradation, effects of morphology, particularly orientation, on the degradation process, and the influence of degradation on plasticity and on the ultimate mechanical behaviour are discussed.

Numerical and experimental analysis of load capacity of pressure vessels for large deformations

Abstract A method of theoretical and experimental investigations of large deformations and load capacity of pressure vessels has been proposed. Algorithms and programs for numerical analysis (with the finite element method) of spatial stress and strain state and load capacity have been worked out according to the Prandtl-Reuss theory of plastic flow. Loading in the vessel was realized in an incremental way. Presynaptic CB1 Receptors Regulate Synaptic Plasticity at Cerebellar Parallel Fiber Synapses

Endocannabinoids are potent regulators of synaptic strength. They are generally thought to modify neurotransmitter release through retrograde activation of presynaptic type 1 cannabinoid receptors (CB1Rs). In the cerebellar cortex, CB1Rs regulate several forms of synaptic plasticity at synapses onto Purkinje cells, including presynaptically expressed short-term plasticity and, somewhat paradoxically, a postsynaptic form of long-term depression (LTD).
