Anthropogenic lead distribution in soils under arable land and permanent grassland estimated by Pb isotopic compositions

International audience; The role of land use on fate of metals in soils is poorly understood. In this work, we studied the incorporation of lead in two neighboring soils with comparable pedogenesis but under long-term different agricultural management. Distributions of anthropogenic Pb were assessed from concentrations and isotopic compositions determined on bulk horizon samples, systematical 5–10 cm increment samples, and on 24-h EDTA extracts. Analytical precision of the isotope ratios measured by quadrupole-based ICP-MS is drastically controlled by the low- frequency noises which originate from nebulisation and vaporisation processes, and from sample introduction systems. Incomplete retention of radiation damage in zircon from Sri Lanka

A suite of 18 zircon gemstones from placers in the Highland/Southwestern Complex, Sri Lanka, were subjected to a comprehensive study of their radiation damages and ages. The investigation included X-ray diffraction, Raman and PL spectroscopy, electron microprobe, PIXE and HRTEM analysis, as well as (U-Th)/He and SHRIMP U-Th-Pb age determinations. Zircon samples described in this study are virtually homogeneous. They cover the range from slightly metamict to nearly amorphous. Generally concordant U-Th-Pb ages averaging 555 ± 11 Ma were obtained. International audience; L’ensemble de Moyencourt constitue à l’heure actuelle l’une des plus importantes séries de rouelles en plomb connue. L’examen détaillé de ces pièces a permis de définir un module principal, centré sur 7 mm, ainsi que probablement deux autres modules, respectivement de 6 mm et 8 mm de diamètre. La série, très homogène morphologiquement, est caractérisée par la rareté des rouelles individualisées et par une datation couvrant la période romaine. Eine Suchschnittprospektion bei Bonneuil-en-France (Val-d’Oise), hat eine stark holzkohlehaltige Schicht zum Vorschein gebracht, die reich an verbrannten oder durch Feuereinwirkung beeinträchtigten archäologischem Fundgut war. Dieses kann in die zweite Hälfte des 1. oder an den Beginn des 2. Jh. n. Chr. datiert werden. Die archäologische Fundstelle, die sich im Talboden am Zusammenfluss von Crould und Morée befindet, gehört zu einer seit der späten Hallstattzeit genutzten Gräberlandschaft. The Roman cemetery of le Clos au Duc in Évreux (Eure) lasted from the 1st to the 4th c. AD. The most common funerary practice in the 1st c. AD was cremation. From the beginning of the 2nd c. AD this rapidly gave place to inhumation burials. By the end of the 3rd c. lead coffins could be found in burials, but it remained a minority practice reserved for an elite. The 2010 excavation in Évreux allowed the recovery of an example of these. It was incomplete, but the good preservation of its remains made a multidisciplinary study possible. Apart from the bones of a young woman, the lead coffin contained coins, textile, fur, calcite (CaCO3) and insects. These results make it possible to retrace t…
