Finnish mergers : Change in the Context of Continuity

This chapter focuses on three prominent university mergers in Finland which took place during the last decade. In order to understand the mergers and the developments that led to them, we highlight broader higher education policy change, most notably the making and implementation of the new Universities Act (558/2009). ABSTRACT During the 15 years that Quality in Higher Education has held a focal position in the field of higher education assessment, the concept of quality has evolved from a debatable and controversial concept to an everyday matter in higher education. The author takes a personal look into the development of the field by first tracking the discursive changes in the debate, and then reflecting on the shift of the quality discussion from a matter of political substance debate to a matter of technical implementation. This chapter describes the general history of research and development work in the Finnish pulp and paper industry from the mid-nineteenth century until roughly 1990, a period that witnessed it undergo drastic changes because of the altered political environment in Europe and general globalization. In addressing its subject, this chapter is mainly concerned with the operation of paper mills, but it also addresses the related subjects of technical research, formal higher education and work-related, practical learning. At the crossroads of the renewal of political history and cultural history, a new research area has been open to historians after a heavy occupation of the land by sociologists and political scientists. The article goes into the methodological stakes that accompany the examination of this public treatment of culture. A new approach of the social stakes of our societies could take effect, by giving to contemporary history a goal that has not been very much in evidence until now: the well-argued study of locality.

Este artículo narra la historia de cómo se reescribió en la España peninsular una obra fundamental de la Ilustración francesa, las Lettres d’une péruvienne (1747) de Françoise de Graffigny, en un proceso tejido de conexiones personales y culturales –amistosas, clientelares, de afinidad o rivalidad intelectual y literaria– entre las dos orillas del mundo hispánico. Se pretende enriquecer el mero análisis textual de la traducción castellana firmada por María Rosario Romero en 1792, reconstruyendo el perfil biográfico de su traductora y el contexto político e intelectual en el que fue gestada y se insertó.
