Modelling molecular iodine emissions in a coastal marine environment: The link to new particle formation

2006

International audience; A model of iodine chemistry in the marine boundary layer (MBL) has been used to investigate the impact of daytime coastal emissions of molecular iodine (I2). The model contains a full treatment of gas-phase iodine chemistry, combined with a description of the nucleation and growth, by condensation and coagulation, of iodine oxide nano-particles. In-situ measurements of coastal emissions of I2 made by the broadband cavity ring-down spectroscopy (BBCRDS) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) techniques are presented and compared to long path differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) observations of I2 at Mace Head, Ireland. Simultaneous me…

Bidirectional cell-matrix interaction dictates neuronal network formation in a brain-mimetic 3D scaffold

2022

Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC) derived neurons are emerging as a powerful tool for studying neurobiology, disease pathology, and modeling. Due to the lack of platforms available for housing and growing hPSC-derived neurons, a pressing need exists to tailor a brain-mimetic 3D scaffold that recapitulates tissue composition and favourably regulates neuronal network formation. Despite the progress in engineering biomimetic scaffolds, an ideal brain-mimetic scaffold is still elusive. We bioengineered a physiologically relevant 3D scaffold by integrating brain-like extracellular matrix (ECM) components and chemical cues. Culturing hPSCs-neurons in hyaluronic acid (HA) gels and HA-chondroitin…

Brain responses of dysphoric and control participants during a self‐esteem implicit association test

2021

Previous studies have reported lowered implicit self‐esteem at the behavioral level among depressed individuals. However, brain responses related to the lowered implicit self‐esteem have not been investigated in people with depression. Here, event‐related potentials were measured in 28 dysphoric participants (individuals with elevated amounts of depressive symptoms) and 30 control participants during performance of an implicit association task (IAT) suggested to reflect implicit self‐esteem. Despite equivalent behavioral performance, differences in brain responses were observed between the dysphoric and the control groups in late positive component (LPC) within 400–1,000 ms poststimulus lat…

On the Complexation of Cu(II) and Cd(II) With Polycarboxyl Ligands. Potentiometric Studies With ISE-H+, ISE-Cu2+, and ISE-Cd2+

2009

The interaction of Cu2+ and Cd2+ ions with polyacrylates (PAA, 2 kDa and 100 kDa), polymetacrylate(PMA, 5.4 kDa), and alginate (AA, 70 kDa to 100 kDa) was studied by potentiometry, using ISE-Cu2+, ISE-Cd2+, and ISE-H+ electrodes. The investigations were performed in NaNO3 aqueous solutions, in the ionic strength range 0.10 e I (mol ·L-1) e 0.75, at T ) 298.15 K. The “diprotic-like model” was used to explain the acid-base behavior of the polycarboxylates under investigation (for this model, the monomeric unit of the polyelectrolyte is considered as a dicarboxylate). The results give evidence for the formation of the ML species in all the systems investigated. In addition, the MLH species was…

A step forward in the development of superoxide dismutase mimetic nanozymes: the effect of the charge of the surface on antioxidant activity

2019

Two binucleating hezaaza macrocycles containing a pyridinol spacer have been prepared and characterised. Protonation studies indicate the deprotonation of the phenol group at relatively low pH values with the concomitant occurrence of a keto-enolic equilibrium. These ligands readily form binuclear Cu2+ and Zn2+ complexes as denoted by potentiometric and spectroscopic studies. The binding of the metals yields to the ready deprotonation of the phenol with the stabilisation of the keto form that results in complexes of greater stabilities than the analogous ones containing pyridine as spacer instead of pyridine. Mixed Cu2+–Zn2+-complexes were also detected in aqueous solutions containing equim…

An Off-On-Off Fluorescent Sensor for pH Windows Based on the 13aneN4-Zn 2+ System

2016

International audience; The new ligand L was prepared and features a 13-membered tetraaza macrocyclic ring with a 1,8-naphthalimide fluorophore appended to a C atom of its backbone. The protonation constants of L as well as its complexation constants with Zn2+ ions were determined in 1:1 water/methanol solutions by potentiometric titrations. Fluorimetric pH titrations were performed with L alone and L in the presence of Zn2+ ions (1:1), and the species distributions (%) versus pH were compared. A window-shaped fluorescence trend was observed with pH for the L/Zn2+ system, which behaves as an off-on-off pH sensor. The on window is centred in the 6.5-7.5 pH range, in correspondence with the f…

Synthesis, Characterization, and Cu(2+) Coordination Studies of a 3-Hydroxy-4-pyridinone Aza Scorpiand Derivative.

2016

The synthesis, acid-base behavior, and Cu(2+) coordination chemistry of a new ligand (L1) consisting of an azamacrocyclic core appended with a lateral chain containing a 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4(1H)-pyridinone group have been studied by potentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, and NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy. UV-vis and NMR studies showed that phenolate group was protonated at the highest pH values [log K = 9.72(1)]. Potentiometric studies point out the formation of Cu(2+) complexes of 1:2, 2:2, 4:3, 1:1, and 2:1 Cu(2+)/L1 stoichiometries. UV-vis analysis and electrochemical studies evidence the implication of the pyridinone moieties in the metal coordination of the 1:2 Cu(2+)/L1 complexes. L1 shows …

Atomistic Insights into Nitrogen-Cycle Electrochemistry: A Combined DFT and Kinetic Monte Carlo Analysis of NO Electrochemical Reduction on Pt(100)

2017

Electrocatalytic denitrification is a promising technology for the removal of NOx species in groundwater. However, a lack of understanding of the molecular pathways that control the overpotential and product distribution have limited the development of practical electrocatalysts, and additional atomic-level insights are needed to advance this field. Adsorbed NO has been identified as a key intermediate in the NOx electroreduction network, and the elementary steps by which it decomposes to NH4+, N2, NH3OH+, or N2O remain a subject of debate. Herein, we report a combined density functional theory (DFT) and kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) study of this reaction on Pt(100), a catalytic surface that i…

Capsaicin desensitization in vivo is inhibited by ruthenium red.

1990

The effect of systemic administration of Ruthenium Red on the excitatory and desensitizing effect of capsaicin was investigated in rats. Ruthenium Red was injected s.c. 30 min before capsaicin was administered. The excitatory effect of capsaicin on corneal, perivascular and visceral afferents was not influenced by treatment with Ruthenium Red. However, determination of the neuropeptide content and evoked neuropeptide release in peripheral organs and dorsal spinal cord 48 h after treatment showed that Ruthenium Red attenuated the 'desensitizing' effect of capsaicin at peripheral, but not at central, endings of primary afferents. On the other hand, a capsaicin-elicited autonomic reflex mediat…
