Epidemiology, Physiology and Clinical Approach to Sleepiness at the Wheel in OSA Patients: A Narrative Review

2022

Sleepiness at the wheel (SW) is recognized as an important factor contributing to road traffic accidents, since up to 30 percent of fatal accidents have been attributed to SW. Sleepiness-related motor vehicle accidents may occur both from falling asleep while driving and from behavior impairment attributable to sleepiness. SW can be caused by various sleep disorders but also by behavioral factors such as sleep deprivation, shift work and non-restorative sleep, as well as chronic disease or the treatment with drugs that negatively affect the level of vigilance. An association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and motor vehicle accidents has been found, with an increasing risk in OSA pati…

The United Sections have clarified that the crime of homicide committed against the same offended person as the crime of persecutory acts integrates a complex crime. This article examines the consequences that this principle has on the parallel theme of the relationship be…

Conseguenze metaboliche dell'ipossia

2011

2015

Patellar fractures are relatively uncommon, accounting for approximately 1% of all fractures. Non-operative treatment represents the best choice for undisplaced patellar fractures. However, surgery becomes necessary when fractures are displaced by more than 2 mm, and may include open reduction and internal fixation. Accurate reduction and rigid fixation are required in order to allow early knee mobilization and to obtain a better clinical outcome. Several techniques have been described for patellar fracture fixation, such as tension band wiring, interfragmentary screw fixation, and the combination of screw fixation and cerclage. In this article up-to-date diagnosis, classification and treat…

Safety of intra-articular hip injection of hyaluronic acid products by ultrasound guidance: an open study from ANTIAGE register.

2013

Abstract. – OBJECTIVE: We developed a standardized technique for ultrasound guided intra-articular injection of the hip joint with the purpose of extending routine intra-articular injection of hyaluronans and steroids to the hip, as commonly used in the knee. In this article we report the safety of this technique in an extended series of patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients were injected supine with an anterosuperior approach under ultrasound guidance. The Us probe is applied with a target device for biopsy. RESULTS: The standardised technique was used to inject 1906 patients with 4002 injections of hyaluronan products over a four-year period. The treatment was well tolerated with few, …

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD): Should it be Considered a Systemic Disease?

2016

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked muscle disease characterized by progressive skeletal muscle loss and development of respiratory failure due to involvement of respiratory muscles. Similar to human DMD, the mdx mouse model lacks dystrophin but is characterized by relatively mild muscle injury, allowing testing the effects of mild endurance exercise training on dystrophic skeletal muscle. We were interested to study the effects of exercise training on airway cells in trained mdx mice by applying the same protocol previously tested in Swiss mice. We found that mdx mice showed little airway inflammation associated with training, but developed increasing apoptosis of airway cells…
