Continuous Femoral Catheter for Postoperative Analgesia After Total Knee Arthroplasty

2020

Introduction Postoperative pain management in the total knee replacement (TKR) represent a fundamental step for a positive outcome, allowing rapid mobilization, already on the first day. Further, continuous peripheral nerve block techniques have been reported to allow effective and safe control of acute postoperative pain, ensuring the implementation and completion of an accurate and intensive joint rehabilitation program. Aim The aim of this study was to assess early mobility and compliance of patients that underwent TKR surgery using the femoral block. Methods For the study, all patients that underwent TKR from 2015 to 2018 with ASA score between II-III was evaluated. Patients underwent v…

Obstructive sleep apnoea independently predicts lipid levels: Data from the European Sleep Apnea Database

2018

Background and objective: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and dyslipidaemia are independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease. This study investigates the association between OSA and plasma lipid concentrations in patients enrolled in the European Sleep Apnea Database (ESADA) cohort. Methods: The cross-sectional analysis included 8592 patients without physician-diagnosed hyperlipidaemia or reported intake of a lipid-lowering drug (age 50.1 ± 12.7 years, 69.1% male, BMI: 30.8 ± 6.6 kg/m2, mean apnoea–hypopnoea index (AHI): 25.7 ± 25.9 events/h). The independent relationship between measures of OSA (AHI, oxygen desaturation index (ODI), mean and lowest oxygen saturation) and lipid profil…

DNA Methylation in Inflammatory Pathways Modifies the Association between BMI and Adult-Onset Non-Atopic Asthma

2019

A high body mass (BMI) index has repeatedly been associated with non-atopic asthma, but the biological mechanism linking obesity to asthma is still poorly understood. We aimed to test the hypothesis that inflammation and/or innate immunity plays a role in the obesity-asthma link. DNA methylome was measured in blood samples of 61 non-atopic participants with asthma and 146 non-atopic participants without asthma (non-smokers for at least 10 years) taking part in the Swiss Cohort Study on Air Pollution and Lung and Heart Diseases in Adults (SAPALDIA) study. Modification by DNA methylation of the association of BMI or BMI change over 10 years with adult-onset asthma was examined at each CpG sit…

Polycitemia vera and pulmonary embolism: case report

2013

Pulmonary embolism is a rare clinical onset of chronic myeloproliferative diseases. Early diagnosis is very important because medical therapy reduces both mortality and morbility. We describe a case of pulmonary embolism as clinical onset of an unknown myeloproliferative disorder. On the basis of our experience is very important early diagnosis and therapy to reduce incidence of later major thrombotic complications.

Effect of pseudo-gravitational acceleration on the dissolution rate of miscible drops

2017

The effect of pseudo-gravitational acceleration on the dissolution process of two phase miscible systems has been investigated at high acceleration values using a spinning drop tensiometer with three systems: 1-butanol/water, isobutyric acid/water, and triethylamine/water. We concluded that the dissolution process involves at least three different transport phenomena: diffusion, barodiffusion, and gravitational (buoyancy-driven) convection. The last two phenomena are significantly affected by the centrifugal acceleration acting at the interface between the two fluids, and the coupling with the geometry of the dissolving drop leads to a change of the mass flux during the course of the dissol…

Pressure dependence of density and structural relaxation of glass near the glass transition region

2017

International audience; A simplified and effective pressure cell together with an experimental procedure has been developed and applied to compress samples of SCHOTT N-BK7 glass under static high pressures in a piston-cylinder apparatus. Results from the density and volume recovery measurements show that, the glass samples were effectively densified in piston-cylinder apparatus with the density at room temperature increasing linearly with frozen-in pressure. To explain the experimental data, we developed a mathematical model based on a suggestion by Gupta (1988) with two internal parameters, named fictive temperature (Tf) and fictive pressure (Pf), which fits the experimental data well.

Retinal nerve fibre layer thickness measurements in myopia by optical coherence tomography

2014

Aim: Our study aimed to evaluate through OCT, in a homogeneous group of subjects with various degrees of myopia, the macular thickness and that of the RNFL with the purpose of highlighting the possible presence of a correlation between their impairment and the degree of myopia. Material and Methods : 83 students of the Faculty of Medicine were considered, distinguished into 4 groups, 3 of them according to the degree of myopia and the last group (control group) was made of emmetropic subjects. Each subject was submitted to a determination of visual acuity and refractive defect and evaluation of the thickness of the macular fibres and of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) through OCT (Stra…

[Coronary artery ectasia: etiopathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment].

2014

Coronary ectasia is a dilation of coronary arteries, angiographically defined if the diameter of the artery is ≥ 1.5 times greater than that of the intact adjacent vascular segment. An association has been found between coronary artery ectasia and a broad spectrum of different diseases, first of all atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. The mechanisms that determine the abnormal dilatation of the vascular lumen and the etiology of coronary artery ectasia are still poorly understood. Various hypotheses have been formulated over the time, the most accredited between these recognizes as main responsible an uncontrolled activity of a particular family of enzymes that degrade the extracellula…
