Uncontrolled early morning blood pressure in medicated patients: the ACAMPA study

2002

BACKGROUND A blood pressure surge during the early morning may help to precipitate cardiovascular events. The objective of this study was thus to assess the blood pressure behaviour profile of early morning blood pressure in patients receiving antihypertensive treatment. DESIGN The ACAMPA study is a multi-center, open, prospective, observational study that was carried out by 24 investigators in Spain. METHODS Two hundred and ninety patients with essential hypertension who had been receiving the same antihypertensive treatment for at least 2 months were included in the study. Office blood pressure was measured before taking medication in the morning, and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monito…

Effect of Lowering LDL Cholesterol Substantially Below Currently Recommended Levels in Patients With Coronary Heart Disease and Diabetes

2006

OBJECTIVE—The Treating to New Targets study showed that intensive lipid-lowering therapy with atorvastatin 80 mg/day provides significant clinical benefit beyond that afforded by atorvastatin 10 mg/day in patients with stable coronary heart disease (CHD). The objective of our study was to investigate whether similar benefits of high-dose intensive atorvastatin therapy can be achieved in patients with CHD and diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS—A total of 1,501 patients with diabetes and CHD, with LDL cholesterol levels of <130 mg/dl, were randomized to double-blind therapy with either atorvastatin 10 (n = 753) or 80 (n = 748) mg/day. Patients were followed for a median of 4.9 years…

Ambulatory blood pressure during diseases of the kidney

1999

During the last few years there has been a renewal of interest in blood-pressure-induced kidney damage due to a progressive increase in the incidence and prevalence of hypertension and vascular diseases as a cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The need to prevent ESRD demands a continuation of effort to make the early identification of hypertensives who are at risk possible and to provide them with effective antihypertensive therapy. Since ambulatory blood pressure monitoring has been used successfully to assess blood pressure and identify risk markers for cardiovascular diseases, a logical approach would be to use it also to identify the risk markers for ESRD. Higher than normal perce…

Effective Henry's law partitioning and the salting constant of glyoxal in aerosols containing sulfate.

2013

The reversible partitioning of glyoxal was studied in simulation chamber experiments for the first time by time-resolved measurements of gas-phase and particle-phase concentrations in sulfate-containing aerosols. Two complementary methods for the measurement of glyoxal particle-phase concentrations are compared: (1) an offline method utilizing filter sampling of chamber aerosols followed by HPLC-MS/MS analysis and (2) positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis of aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) data. Ammonium sulfate (AS) and internally mixed ammonium sulfate/fulvic acid (AS/FA) seed aerosols both show an exponential increase of effective Henry's law coefficients (KH,eff) with AS concentr…

Drop-on-demand sample introduction system coupled with the flowing atmospheric-pressure afterglow for direct molecular analysis of complex liquid mic…

2012

One of the fastest developing fields in analytical spectrochemistry in recent years is ambient desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (ADI-MS). This burgeoning interest has been due to the demonstrated advantages of the method: simple mass spectra, little or no sample preparation, and applicability to samples in the solid, liquid, or gaseous state. One such ADI-MS source, the flowing atmospheric-pressure afterglow (FAPA), is capable of direct analysis of solids just by aiming the source at the solid surface and sampling the produced ions into a mass spectrometer. However, direct introduction of significant volumes of liquid samples into this source has not been possible, as solvent loads c…

High Pressure Inside Nanometer-Sized Particles Influences the Rate and Products of Chemical Reactions

2021

International audience; The composition of organic aerosol has a pivotal influence on aerosol properties such as toxicity and cloud droplet formation capability, which could affect both climate and air quality. However, a comprehensive and fundamental understanding of the chemical and physical processes that occur in nanometer-sized atmospheric particles remains a challenge that severely limits the quantification and predictive capabilities of aerosol formation pathways. Here, we investigated the effects of a fundamental and hitherto unconsidered physical property of nanoparticles-the Laplace pressure. By studying the reaction of glyoxal with ammonium sulfate, both ubiquitous and important …

Real-Time Analysis of Ambient Organic Aerosols Using Aerosol Flowing Atmospheric-Pressure Afterglow Mass Spectrometry (AeroFAPA-MS).

2015

Organic compounds contribute to a major fraction of atmospheric aerosols and have significant impacts on climate and human health. However, because of their chemical complexity, their measurement remains a major challenge for analytical instrumentation. Here we present the development and characterization of a new soft ionization technique that allows mass spectrometric real-time detection of organic compounds in aerosols. The aerosol flowing atmospheric-pressure afterglow (AeroFAPA) ion source is based on a helium glow discharge plasma, which generates excited helium species and primary reagent ions. Ionization of the analytes occurs in the afterglow region after thermal desorption and pro…

Identification of organic hydroperoxides and hydroperoxy acids in secondary organic aerosol formed during the ozonolysis of different monoterpenes an…

2009

On-line ion trap mass spectrometry (ITMS) enables the real-time characterization of reaction products of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). The analysis was conducted by directly introducing the aerosol particles into the ion source. Positive-ion chemical ionization at atmospheric pressure (APCI(+)) ITMS was used for the characterization of constituents of biogenic SOA produced in reaction-chamber experiments. APCI in the positive-ion mode usually enables the detection of [M+H](+) ions of the individual SOA components. In this paper the identification of organic peroxides from biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by on-line APCI-ITMS is presented. Organic peroxides containing a hydroper…

Comparison of UV and charged aerosol detection approach in pharmaceutical analysis of statins

2009

Abstract CAD (charged aerosol detector) has recently become a new alternative detection system in HPLC. This detection approach was applied in a new HPLC method for the determination of three of the major statins used in clinical treatment—simvastatin, lovastatin and atorvastatin. The method was optimized and the influence of individual parameters on CAD response and sensitivity was carefully studied. Chromatography was performed on a Zorbax Eclipse XDB C18 (4.6 mm × 75 mm, 3.5 μm), using acetonitrile and formic acid 0.1% as mobile phase. The detection was performed using both CAD (20 pA range) and DAD (diode array detector—238 nm) simultaneously connected in series. In terms of linearity, …

Characterization of oligomeric compounds in secondary organic aerosol using liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization Fourier transfor…

2009

The components of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) generated from the gas-phase ozonolysis of two C(10)H(16)-terpenes (alpha-pinene; sabinene) and a cyclic C(6)H(10) alkene (cyclohexene) were characterized by the use of a Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometer equipped with an electrospray ionization source operated in the negative ion mode. Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography was used to achieve chromatographic separation of highly oxidized organic compounds. In addition to the well-known group of low molecular weight oxidation products (monomers; e.g. dicarboxylic acids), higher molecular weight compounds (dimers) were also detected and their exact elemental …
