Positivity bound on the imaginary part of the right-chiral tensor coupling $g_R$ in polarized top quark decay

2017

We derive a positivity bound on the right-chiral tensor coupling Im $g_R$ in polarized top quark decay by analyzing the angular decay distribution of the three-body polarized top quark decay $t(\uparrow)\to b+\ell^+ +\nu_\ell$ in NLO QCD. We obtain the bound $-0.0420 \le$ Im $g_R \le 0.0420$.

Slope units-based flow susceptibility model: using validation tests to select controlling factors

2011

A susceptibility map for an area, which is representative in terms of both geologic setting and slope instability phenomena of large sectors of the Sicilian Apennines, was produced using slope units and a multiparametric univariate model. The study area, extending for approximately 90 km2, was partitioned into 774 slope units, whose expected landslide occurrence was estimated by averaging seven susceptibility values, determined for the selected controlling factors: lithology, mean slope gradient, stream power index at the foot, mean topographic wetness index and profile curvature, slope unit length, and altitude range. Each of the recognized 490 landslides was represented by its centroid po…

Robustness of the Gaussian concentration inequality and the Brunn–Minkowski inequality

2016

We provide a sharp quantitative version of the Gaussian concentration inequality: for every $r>0$, the difference between the measure of the $r$-enlargement of a given set and the $r$-enlargement of a half-space controls the square of the measure of the symmetric difference between the set and a suitable half-space. We also prove a similar estimate in the Euclidean setting for the enlargement with a general convex set. This is equivalent to the stability of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality for the Minkowski sum between a convex set and a generic one.

Noise Induced Phenomena in point Josephson junctions

2008

We present the analysis of the mean switching time and its standard deviation of short overdamped Josephson junctions, driven by a direct current and a periodic signal. The effect of noise enhanced stability is investigated. It is shown that fluctuations may both decrease and increase the switching time.

Effects of Grade Retention Policies: A Literature Review of Empirical Studies Applying Causal Inference

2021

The identification of the causal effects of grade retention policies is of enormous relevance for researchers and policymakers alike. Taking advantage of the availability of more detailed longitudinal datasets, researchers have been able to apply different identification strategies that address the classical problems of selection bias and unobserved heterogeneity that have plagued previous studies on the effect of retention. We present a systematic literature review of empirical studies aiming to unveil the causal effects of retention. This study underlines the need to consider and evaluate different kinds of grade retention polices as their effects vary depending on several dimensions (suc…

Some analytical considerations on two-scale relations

1994

Scaling functions that generate a multiresolution analysis (MRA) satisfy, among other conditions, the so-called «two-scale relation» (TSR). In this paper we discuss a number of properties that follow from the TSR alone, independently of any MRA: position of zeros (mainly for continuous scaling functions), existence theorems (using fixed point and eigenvalue arguments) and orthogonality relation between integer translates. © 1994 Società Italiana di Fisica.

Fuzzy temporal random sets with an application to cell biology

2007

Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Microscopy (TIRFM) greatly facilitates to imaging the first steps of endocytosis, a process whereby cells traffic cargo from the cell surface to endosomes. Using TIRFM, fluorescent-tagged endocytic proteins are observed as overlapped areas forming random clumps of different sizes, shapes and durations. A common procedure to segment these objects consists of thresholding the original gray-level images to produce binary sequences in which a pixel is covered or not by a given fluorescent-tagged protein. This binary logic is not appropriate because it leaves a free tuning parameter to be set by the user which can influence on the conclusions of the statist…

Probabilities to Accept Languages by Quantum Finite Automata

1999

We construct a hierarchy of regular languages such that the current language in the hierarchy can be accepted by 1-way quantum finite automata with a probability smaller than the corresponding probability for the preceding language in the hierarchy. These probabilities converge to 1/2.

A naive relevance feedback model for content-based image retrieval using multiple similarity measures

2010

This paper presents a novel probabilistic framework to process multiple sample queries in content based image retrieval (CBIR). This framework is independent from the underlying distance or (dis)similarity measures which support the retrieval system, and only assumes mutual independence among their outcomes. The proposed framework gives rise to a relevance feedback mechanism in which positive and negative data are combined in order to optimally retrieve images according to the available information. A particular setting in which users interactively supply feedback and iteratively retrieve images is set both to model the system and to perform some objective performance measures. Several repo…
