Skin is the first barrier of defense on fish, which is crucial to protection against different stressors, including pathogens. Skin samples obtained from dorsal and ventral part of Sparus aurata specimens were incubated with Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida (a pathogen for this fish species), with Shewanella putrefaciens Pdp11 (a probiotic bacteria isolated from healthy gilthead seabream skin) or with both bacteria. The effect of probiotics on the genotoxicity of furazolidone.

Antigenotoxic activity of probiotic bacteria against furazolidone was studied using the short-term bacterial assay SOS chromotest, with Escherichia coli PQ37 as the test organism. The supernatants from probiotic and furazolidone co-incubation exhibited rather strong suppression on SOS induction produced by furazolidone on E. coli PQ 37 (sfiA: lacZ). Genotoxicity inhibition was found for all strains of the examined bacteria belonging to three genera. The highest genotoxicity inhibition was detected for Bifidobacterium lactis Bb-12 (92.0%) and for Lactobacillus acidophilus T20 (81.9%).

Within the scope of the DEPROHEALTH project, a range of wild-type strains of Lactobacillus were analysed for their ability to interact with the host immune system. While the studied isolates interacted in a strain-specific way with immune cells, they seemed to have little and non-discriminative effect on epithelial cells. However, they were shown to facilitate the cross-talk between intestinal and immune cells. AbstractThe aim of the study was to determine the effect of Jerusalem artichoke and probiotics on defence activity of intestinal cells of weaning pigs. One hundred eighty piglets (7 weeks old) were fed with basal feed supplemented with Jerusalem artichoke, Lactobacillus reuteri and Pediococcus pentosaceus. After 5 weeks, the piglets were slaughtered and the gastrointestinal contents and intestine samples were taken for analysis.
