SUMMARYIn order to study the infection dynamics of 2 renal myxozoans, Zschokkella hildae Auerbach, 1910 and Gadimyxa atlanticaKøie, Karlsbakk and Nylund, 2007 in cultured Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua L. aged 3–19 months, a specific single-round PCR assay and a double-label in situ hybridization protocol were developed. Characterization of the apical membrane antigen-1 in Italian strains of Babesia bigemina

Babesia bigemina is a parasite endemic in different parts of the world, including Europe and the Americas. One of the few genes characterized in this species codifies for the Apical Membrane Antigen 1 (AMA-1), a trans-membrane antigen recently identified. In this research, we characterized the ama-1 gene from three Italian B. bigemina strains, two B. bigemina strains obtained from Ragusa, Sicily (ITA1 and ITA3) and a third one obtained from Benevento, Campania (ITA2). Abstract Background Although the extent of horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in complete genomes has been widely studied, its influence in the evolution of natural communities of prokaryotes remains unknown. The availability of metagenomic sequences allows us to address the study of global patterns of prokaryotic evolution in samples from natural communities. However, the methods that have been commonly used for the study of HGT are not suitable for metagenomic samples. Molecular phylogeny of parabasalids with emphasis on the order Cristamonadida and its complex morphological evolution

Kudoa trifolia sp. n. ? molecular phylogeny suggests a new spore morphology and unusual tissue location for a well-known genus

A new species of myxozoan, Kudoa trifolia sp. n., was found in various organs of the golden grey mullet, Liza aurata (Risso), and the thinlip mullet, L. ramada (Risso), from the western Mediterranean. Spores developed in subspherical plasmodia of 0.28-1 mm diameter within connective tissue, predominantly in the spleen, the outer wall of the gall bladder and the gut, the mesenteries and occasionally also in the gills. Karyotypic diversity among Blastocystis hominis isolates

Fifteen Blastocystis hominis strains, 13 axenic and 2 monoxenic, have been included in the present study. The chromosomal pattern was analyzed by the contour-clamped homogeneous electric-field (CHEF) system. The number of chromosomes detected ranged between 9 and 13, with sizes from 2200 kbp to 260 kbp. Eleven karyotypic profiles, with a common pattern constituted by 8 chromosomes of 2200, 1280, 890, 840, 700, 650, 540 and 260 kbp, were observed. Occurrence and genotypes of Giardia isolated from lambs in Spain

Three hundred and eighty six faecal specimens were randomly collected from 1- to 3-month-old lambs from 16 farms in Spain to investigate the presence of different genotypes of Giardia duodenalis. Individual specimens were examined by IFA (Immunofluorescence assay) and beta-giardin PCR polymerase chain reaction. Cysts of G. duodenalis were shed by lambs in every flock analyzed, showing a prevalence by farms of 100%. Myxobolus albin. sp. (Myxozoa) from the Gills of the Common GobyPomatoschistus micropsKrøyer (Teleostei: Gobiidae)

A recent investigation into the myxozoan fauna of common gobies, Pomatoschistus microps, from the Forth Estuary in Scotland, revealed numerous myxosporean cysts within the gill cartilage. They were composed of polysporous plasmodia containing myxobolid spores that were morphologically different from the other known species of Myxobolus and from the myxosporeans previously recorded from this host (i.e. the ceratomyxid Ellipsomyxa gobii, infecting the gall bladder, and the kudoid Kudoa camarguensis, infecting the muscle tissues). Interaction of iron(II)-heme and artemisinin with a peptide mimic of Plasmodium falciparum HRP-II

Abstract The interaction of heme or heme-artemisinin adducts (heme-art) with different peptides mimicking repeat sequences of the Histidine-Rich-Protein-II of Plasmodium falciparum (PfHRP-II) was investigated. The pseudo-first order rate constants of the coordination of heme or heme-art onto a histidine rich peptide, used as a mimic of PfHRP-II putative heme binding sequence, are of the same order of magnitude, namely 42 and 14 s −1 , respectively. Humoral immune response in IL-12 and IFN-gamma deficient mice after infection with Cryptosporidium parvum.

Infection with Cryptosporidium spp. causes diarrhoeal disease and has become an important medical and veterinary problem especially in the immunocompromised host. The importance of the adaptive immune response, with CD4+ T-lymphocytes being the major players, has been clearly demonstrated. The requirement of IL-12 and IFN-gamma identifies this response as a Th1-dominated reaction. IFN-gamma is also important in the early phase of the host-parasite interaction.
