A PSO algorithm for designing 3d highway alignments adopting polynomial solutions

2017

Intelligent optimization algorithms for highway alignments have produced good results so far. However, considering the numerous constraints and factors directly implied in the infrastructure design, the researchers' efforts usually focus only on simplifying the alignment choice, supporting engineers in the design phase. Implementing strategic considerations regarding comfort and safety would be also very important. In this paper, the authors propose a method for designing improved 3D highway alignments using a specific optimization algorithm, based on a Swarm Intelligence technique, adopting an innovative polynomial transition curve as the unique horizontal curvature element, called PPC (Po…

A Monitoring and Management System for Energy Storage Integration in Smart Grids

2019

The integration of distributed storage systems (DSSs) at users and prosumers level can significantly contribute to energy efficiency and increase profits from renewable energy exploitation, thanks to suitable scheduling of charging and discharging periods. On the other hand, to preserve network stability and secure operation, Distribution Systems Operators (DSOs) are interested in DSSs control and cooperation with the grid. In this framework this work proposes a simple monitoring and management system for DSSs scheduling and its integration in a distributed measurement and control system architecture for smart grids. In the paper the proposed algorithm is tested on a simple case study at ho…

Simulating soil freeze/thaw cycles typical of winter alpine conditions: Implications for N and P availability

2007

Abstract Seasonally snow-covered alpine soils may be subjected to freeze/thaw cycles, particularly during years having little snow and during the late winter and early spring periods. Freeze/thaw cycles can stimulate soil mineralization and could therefore be one factor regulating nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability and cycling. In this study laboratory incubation experiments using four soils having contrasting properties have been used to characterize the change in N and P forms (microbial and soluble inorganic/organic) that occur after simulated freeze/thaw cycles. Soil samples were collected from locations representing extreme examples of either direct human management (grazed m…

1989 10. Las elecciones generales de 29 de octubre de 1989. La tercera mayoría socialista: 175 diputados

2014

Quercomys bijmai gen. nov. sp. nov., a new dormouse of the subfamily Myomiminae, is described from the Oligocene/Miocene Boundary Interval of Santa Cilia (Huesca), Quel-1 and Fuenmayor-2 (La Rioja). Quercomys gen. nov. is characterized by its medium size, its hypsodont teeth, and its simple dental pattero. It is related to other genera, like Praearmantomys, Armantomys or Pseudodryomys , and its appearance is at a moment of high diversity of the family.

Solid-solid phase transition in hard ellipsoids

2009

We present a computer simulation study of the crystalline phases of hard ellipsoids of revolution. A previous study [P. Pfleiderer and T. Schilling, Phys. Rev. E 75, 020402 (2007)]. showed that for aspect ratios a/bor=3 the previously suggested stretched-fcc phase [D. Frenkel and B. Mulder, Mol. Phys. 55, 1171 (1985)] is unstable with respect to a simple monoclinic phase with two ellipsoids of different orientations per unit cell (SM2). In order to study the stability of these crystalline phases at different aspect ratios and as a function of density we have calculated their free energies by thermodynamic integration. The integration path was sampled by an expanded ensemble method in which …

IL-6 Regulates Neutrophil Microabscess Formation in IL-17A-Driven Psoriasiform Lesions

2014

The lack of a generally accepted animal model for human psoriasis has hindered progress with respect to understanding the pathogenesis of the disease. Here we present a model in which transgenic IL-17A expression is targeted to the skin in mice, achievable after crossing our IL-17A(ind) allele to the K14-Cre strain. K14-IL-17A(ind/+) mice invariably develop an overt skin inflammation bearing many hallmark characteristics of human psoriasis including dermal infiltration of effector T cells, formation of neutrophil microabscesses, and hyperkeratosis. IL-17A expression in the skin results in upregulated granulopoiesis and migration of IL-6R-expressing neutrophils into the skin. Neutralization …

MALIGNANT TUMOR-LIKE GAASTRIC LESION DUE TO CANDIDA ALBICANS IN A DIABETIC PATIENT TREATED WITH CYCLOSPORIN: A CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATU…

2012

The gastrointestinal tract of healthy individuals is colonized by hundreds of saprophytes and mycetes, especially the Candida species, are habitual ones. Under certain conditions, the fungal flora may overgrow, resulting in lesions of the digestive mucosa which, rarely, can have a local diffusion and/or spread to the lympho-hematogenous system. Mycotic infections of the stomach can sometimes look like benign gastric ulcers. Here, we present the case report of a woman, aged 64, who presented with type II diabetes mellitus and psoriasis, on chronic treatment with cyclosporin A and with endoscopic evidence of an ulcerated, vegetating gastric lesion secondary to Candida albicans infection. Alth…
