Short-Time Non-work-related Computing and Creative Performance

2014

It has been argued that non-work-related computing (NWRC) takes time away from work and, hence, decreases work productivity. On the other hand, it has also been claimed that short-time non-work-related computing (STNWRC) (a maximum of 15 minutes), has a positive impact on work productivity, including relief from boredom, higher creativity, and the underlying recovery mechanisms. To examine the impact of STNWRC on creative performance, we draw on Fredrickson's broaden-and-build theory, the concept of recovery with mental well-being and low cognitive effort. A 2 × 2 factorial experiment with 40 subjects was conducted. The results indicate that STNWRC has a positive effect on creative performa…

Visualising maritime vessel open data for better situational awareness in ice conditions

2018

Situational awareness of maritime vessels in ice conditions is important for the operation of supply chains. In the artic sea areas, the ice conditions pose a major challenge for maritime vessels getting stuck in the ice and being significantly delayed in arrival to harbor. Data science and open data provide new opportunities to overcome these challenges. This paper introduces available open data sources and data visualizations that can be used to develop applications, for example, for detecting maritime vessel collision, predicting estimated time of arrival to harbor, as well as maritime vessel route optimization in ice conditions. The paper begins by introducing available open data source…

Government policy failure in public support for research and development

2014

peer-reviewed Promoting Research and Development (R&D) and innovative activity is a key element of the EU Lisbon Agenda and is seen as playing a central part in stimulating economic development. In this paper we argue that, even allowing for benevolent policy-makers, informational asymmetries can lead to a misallocation of public support for R&D, hence government policy failure, with the potential to exacerbate preexisting market failures. Initially, we explore alternative allocation mechanisms for public support, which can help to minimize the scale of these government policy failures. Of these mechanisms (grants, tax credits, or allocation rules based on past performance), our results sug…

FUNCTIONAL STUDY ON THE ROLE OF TACHYKININS IN COLONIC PERISTALTIC ACTIVITY IN MICE

2009

Because the role of tachykinin receptors in colonic peristalsis remains incompletely understood, we studied the effect of tachykinin receptor antagonists on mouse colonic peristaltic activity. Peristaltic activity was assessed by quantifying the amplitude and interval of distension-induced pressure waves in proximal and distal colon segments of mice using a modified Trendelenburg set-up. We studied the effect of the NK1, NK2 and NK3 tachykinin receptor antagonists RP67580 (2 mM), nepadutant (1 mM) and SR142801 (0.3 mM) respectively. Gradual distension of proximal and distal colon segments induced repetitive rhythmic pressure waves which were blocked by tetrodotoxin (1 mM) and virtually abol…

An Atypical Case of Taravana Syndrome in a Breath-Hold Underwater Fishing Champion: A Case Report

2013

Dysbaric accidents are usually referred to compressed air-supplied diving. Nonetheless, some cases of decompression illness are known to have occurred among breath-hold (BH) divers also, and they are reported in the medical literature. A male BH diver (57 years old), underwater fishing champion, presented neurological disorders as dizziness, sensory numbness, blurred vision, and left frontoparietal pain after many dives to a 30–35 meters sea water depth with short surface intervals. Symptoms spontaneously regressed and the patient came back home. The following morning, pain and neurological impairment occurred again and the diver went by himself to the hospital where he had a generalized to…

The role of temperament in children's affective and behavioral responses in achievement situations

2013

Abstract Although students' affects and behaviors in achievement situations have been shown to be influenced by their previous learning experiences, less is known about how they relate to students' dispositional characteristics, such as temperament. This study examined to what extent children's temperament is related to their affective and behavioral responses in achievement situations. Teachers rated first-graders' ( n  = 153) temperamental characteristics in the Fall semester. Children's active task avoidance, anxiety, and helplessness were rated in test situations in the Fall and Spring semesters. The results showed that the more easily distracted the children were, the more task avoidan…

Expression and characterization of the human sweet taste receptor expressed in a mammalian inducible cell line

2018

International audience; Sweet taste perception is mediated by a heterodimeric receptor composed of the two distinct protein subunits, TAS1R2 and TAS1R3. TAS1R2 and TAS1R3 subunits are members of the small family of class C GPCRs. Class C GPCRs share a large N-terminal domain (NTD) linked to the heptahelical transmembrane domain by a cysteine-rich region. TAS1R2/TAS1R3 is the primary receptor for a diverse range of sweet compounds including natural sugars, sweet amino acids, artificial sweeteners and plant sweet-tasting proteins. In order to understand the molecular mechanisms that govern receptor – ligand interactions and the relative contribution of the two subunits to the detection of swe…
