Collisional ionization as a sensitive detection scheme in collinear laser-fast-beam spectroscopy

Abstract State-selective collisional ionization of fast atomic beams is used to detect optical pumping. Counting of these ions is superior in sensitivity by several orders of magnitude to the conventional fluorescence detection, provided that the energy levels involved in the optical pumping process are sufficiently well separated. A straightforward application is envisaged in the collinear laser-fast-beam spectroscopy of rare-gas isotopes far from stability of which only very weak beams are available from on-line isotope separators.

Evidence for anI=1 isomeric state in96Rb

Aβ-RADOP (β-Radiation Detected Optical Pumping) experiment on the short lived (T1/2=203 ms)96Rb isotope has been performed at the on line mass separator for fission produced alkali isotopes at the TRIGA reactor in Mainz. Irradiation of r.f. onto the polarized sample to induce Zeeman transitions resulted in two signals for nuclear spinsI=2 andI=1. The previously undetermined component withI=1 is interpreted as evidence for an isomeric state in96Rb.
Laser spectroscopy with an electrostatic ConeTrap

A compact electrostatic trap has been designed and installed as part of the recent upgrades to the IGISOL IV facility. The ConeTrap provides an in vacuo optical pumping site for low energy (800 eV) ionic ensembles available for interaction periods of 10-100 ms. At present, 6.7(3) % of injected mass A=98 ions can be trapped, stored for 5 ms, extracted and transported to a laser-ion interaction region. This fraction represents those ions for which no perturbation to total energy or energy spread is observed. Purpose: Analyze the role of somatostatin analogues (SSAs) in the treatment of sporadic and MEN1-related gastrinomas, trying to define whether recent trials have changed the landscape of gastrinoma therapy. Methods: We evaluate the rationale of SSA use in the treatment of gastrinomas, summarize the current literature concerning the effect of SSAs on the control of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) and gastrinomas tumor progression and discuss their role in the most recent guidelines. Long-wavelength monolithic GaInNAs vertical-cavity optical amplifiers

We report on the continuous-wave amplification characteristics of an optically pumped 1.3-μm multiple-quantum-well GaInNAs-GaAs vertical-cavity semiconductor optical amplifier (VCSOA). The VCSOA structure was monolithically grown by molecular beam epitaxy and operated in reflection mode in a fiber-coupled system. The maximum on-chip gain attained, limited by the onset of laser action, was 15.6 dB at 196 mW of 980-nm pump power. For a chip gain of 10.4 dB, the optical bandwidth was 10.8 GHz and the saturation output power was -9 dBm. By varying the pump laser power, a maximum extinction ratio of 22.3 dB was obtained. This paper aims to review recent developments in the field of doped fiber-based optical amplifiers and serve as a reference for promising optical signal amplification techniques that may be useful for practical implementation in high-capacity and cost-efficient telecommunications systems. GaInNAs/GaAs Bragg-mirror-based structures for novel 1.3μm device applications

We report the use of GaInNAs/GaAs material system for a range of 1.3 μm vertical-cavity devices namely VCSELs, VCSOAs, VECSELs and SESAMs. Using optical pumping, we demonstrate that up to 4 mW of 1290 nm output power can be fibre-coupled from a VCSEL. We also show that tayloring the VCSEL structure allows to produce a monolithic long-wavelength VCSOA with up to 16 dB of gain. We also report the first demonstration of a 1.3 μm VECSEL with more than 0.5 W of CW ouptut power. Finally, annealing effects on the properties of a GaInNAs SBR and modelocking of two Nd:doped solid state lasers using this element are described.
Diode-pumped bulk Er:Yb:Glass 1.54μm pulsed laser with 1.2J output and 25% optical efficiency

We report a pulsed transversely diode-pumped compact Er:Yb:Glass laser of uncomplicated design, delivering output energy of approx. 1.2J in free-running operation and 25% optical slope efficiency.
