THE HOUSE THAT IS NOT THERE: THE HOME FEELING IN JONATHAN RABAN’S LANGUAGE IN FOREIGN LAND

2021

This work aims to analyse the novel of the journalist and novelist Jonathan Raban, Foreign Land, trying to highlight how, through the language used, the author manages to elaborate a personal, intimate and even dramatic vision of themes such as the relationship between man and the environment, the sense of uprooting and the love for the sea that are typical themes of travel literature within which this novel is enrolled. More specifically, the text, taken from a work of reading analysis and translation of the Rabanian work from English to Italian, aims to highlight the metaphorical dimension of the home feeling made particularly effective by the parallelism between the inner dimension of th…

2020

This work introduces a method to estimate reflectance, shading, and specularity from a single image. Reflectance, shading, and specularity are intrinsic images derived from the dichromatic model. Estimation of these intrinsic images has many applications in computer vision such as shape recovery, specularity removal, segmentation, or classification. The proposed method allows for recovering the dichromatic model parameters thanks to two independent quadratic programming steps. Compared to the state of the art in this domain, our approach has the advantage to address a complex inverse problem into two parallelizable optimization steps that are easy to solve and do not require learning. The p…

On the volume of unit vector fields on spaces of constant sectional curvature

2004

A unit vector field X on a Riemannian manifold determines a submanifold in the unit tangent bundle. The volume of X is the volume of this submanifold for the induced Sasaki metric. It is known that the parallel fields are the trivial minima.

Fuzzy selecting local region level set algorithm

2015

In this work, we introduced a novel localized region based level set model which is simultaneously effective for heterogeneous object or/and background and robust against noise. As such, we propose to minimize an energy functional based on a selective local average, i.e., when computing the local average, instead to use the intensity of all the pixels surrounding a given pixel, we first give a local Gaussian fuzzy membership to be a background or an object pixel to each of these surrounding pixels and then, we use the fuzzy weighted local average of these pixels to replace the traditional local average. With the graphics processing units' acceleration, the local lattice Boltzmann method is …

Solutions of elliptic equations with a level surface parallel to the boundary: stability of the radial configuration

2016

A positive solution of a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary value problem or initial-value problems for certain elliptic or parabolic equations must be radially symmetric and monotone in the radial direction if just one of its level surfaces is parallel to the boundary of the domain. Here, for the elliptic case, we prove the stability counterpart of that result. We show that if the solution is almost constant on a surface at a fixed distance from the boundary, then the domain is almost radially symmetric, in the sense that is contained in and contains two concentric balls $${B_{{r_e}}}$$ and $${B_{{r_i}}}$$ , with the difference r e -r i (linearly) controlled by a suitable norm of the deviation…

Evaluation Of Massive Parallel Sequencing As A Diagnostic Tool For Familial Hypercholesterolemia

2015

Abstract Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is one of the most common single gene disorders, which is mostly inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. The physical signs of FH are elevated low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), elevated total cholesterol (TC) levels and tendon xantomas. Identification and early treatment of affected individuals is desirable and in lack of physical symptoms DNA-based diagnosis provides confirmation of diagnosis and enables early patient management. The majority of FH cases are caused by mutations in four genes (APOB, LADLR, PCSK9, and LDLRAP1). There are commercial kits available for testing of the 20 most common FH causing mutations, but the spectrum …

A new suggested class of organic tubular structures

2004

A DFT study has been performed on monomers and dimers of new cyclic structures, cyclodioxabislactams, which are expected to bring about tubular structures through a stacking process settled by hydrogen-bonding between antiparallel peptidic groups. Different stacking modes have been found with significant effects on the energetics of the assembling process.

Efficient parallel tempering for first-order phase transitions

2007

We present a Monte Carlo algorithm that facilitates efficient parallel tempering simulations of the density of states g(E) . We show that the algorithm eliminates the supercritical slowing down in the case of the Q=20 and Q=256 Potts models in two dimensions, typical examples for systems with extreme first-order phase transitions. As recently predicted, and shown here, the microcanonical heat capacity along the calorimetric curve has negative values for finite systems.

A new control system prototype for the energy production maximization of a unequally irradiated PV system

2011

This paper deals with the mismatch effect due to a unequally irradiation on a PV (PhotoVoltaic) system. The mismatch effect due to the partial shading of a PV module can be limited thanks to the installation of both bypass and block diodes. Unfortunately, this solution cannot fully solve the disvantages related to the mismatch effect. The Authors, in previous papers [1, 2], have theoretically demonstrated that the mismatch effect can be solved by changing the parallel/series connections of the modules of a PV system, taking into account each module radiating condition. This paper represents a first step of the experimental development of the above mentioned theoretical result. Specifically,…
