Processes affecting the stable isotope composition of calcite during precipitation on the surface of stalagmites: Laboratory experiments investigatin…
2016
Abstract We present a theoretical derivation of the exchange time, τex, needed to establish isotopic equilibrium between atmospheric CO2 in a cave and HCO3− dissolved in a thin water film covering the surface of a speleothem. The result is τ ex = τ red ex · [ HCO 3 - ] K H · p CO 2 cave , where τ red ex depends on the depth, a, of the water film and on temperature. [ HCO 3 - ] is the concentration of bicarbonate, p CO 2 cave the partial pressure of CO2, and KH is Henry’s constant. To test the theory we prepared stagnant or flowing thin films of a NaHCO3 solution and exposed them at 20 °C to an CO2 containing atmosphere of p CO 2 500, 12,500, or 25,000 ppmV and defined isotope composition. T…
Experimental conditions for respiration and growth studies of F0 and F1 larval and juvenile European seabass Dicentrarchus labrax
2022
Water parameters in the 2 years before spawning of F0 (08.02.2016-06.03.2018) and during larval and juvenile phase of F1: Larval period until 17.05.2018 (48 dph, 900 dd) and 01.06.2018 (63 dph, ~900 dd) for warm and cold life condition respectively, for the juveniles until 28.09.2018 (180 dph, ~4000 dd) and 12.02.2019 (319 dph, ~5100 dd) for warm and cold conditioned fish respectively. Means ± s.e. over all replicate tanks per condition. Temperature (Temp.), pH (free scale), salinity, oxygen and total alkalinity (TA) were measured weekly in F1 and monthly in F0; sea water (SW) measurements were conducted in 2017 and 2018. Water parameters during larval and early juvenile phase of F0: Larval…
Calibration of misonidazole labeling by simultaneous measurement of oxygen tension and labeling density in multicellular spheroids
1995
To correlate misonidazole concentrations and oxygen pressures (Po2) at identical locations within EMT6/Ro multi-cell spheroids (mean diameters +/- SD: 867 +/- 20 microns), Po2 measurements were performed with oxygen-sensitive microelectrodes during incubation of these spheroids with tritiated misonidazole (10 mg/I; 445 microCi/mg). In each individual spheroid, Po2 profiles were correlated with the corresponding spatial distribution of misonidazole as quantified by conventional autoradiography and grain counting. To compare the oxygenation status of spheroids in the measuring chamber with that of spheroids in spinner culture, misonidazole labeling was performed in both environments following…
Vascularity, perfusion rate and local tissue oxygenation of tumors derived from ras-transformed fibroblasts.
2007
Tumors derived from ras-transformed rat fibroblasts were investigated in order to gain insight into possible interrelationships between oncogenic transformations and therapeutically relevant parameters of the metabolic micromilieu of solid tumors in vivo. Tumors grew in nude mice after injection of in vitro-passaged cells. Growth rates, early stages of angiogenesis, perfusion and tissue oxygenation were assessed. Compared with the parental cell line, both ras transformants grew very rapidly and exhibited an early onset of angiogenesis. Perfusion rates of one ras-transformed tumor line were similar to those of the parental tumors whereas reduced flow values were detected in tumors of the oth…
Blood flow and metabolic microenvironment of brain tumors
1994
Summarizing thesein vivo data in the context of brain tumor therapy, the following aspects are of particular importance: Low and heterogeneous tumor blood flow may — in addition to the limiting effects of the blood-brain barrier — result in compromised delivery of drugs from blood to the tissue. Low tumor pO2 reduces sensitivity to standard radiation and ‘O2-dependent’ anticancer drugs. Treatment efficacy may be further altered by changes of tumor pH. Particularly acidosis can decrease radiation sensitivity and modulate the cytotoxicity of anticancer drugs. In the following presentations, these aspects will be discussed regardingin vivo data obtained with positron emission tomography.
Der O2-Austausch zwischen Capillaren und Gewebe I. O2-Konzentrationsprofile in Blutcapillaren und deren Umgebung
1968
The differential equations valid for technical heat exchangers can also describe the O2 exchange in the blood capillaries and the exchange of molecules like THO and acetamid in the renal tubules. Differences in the boundary conditions occur, however. Hence, these differential equations were resolved for the corresponding boundary conditions. The results permit us to conclude that the concentration profiles occurring in the capillaries and renal tubules, as a result of diffusion in the capillary cross-section, can, generally speaking, be disregarded for the following reason: Although the differences in partial pressure between the capillary wall and capillary centre, at the beginning of the …
Optimal Pre-Oxygenation: The Nasoral-System
1994
The human body’s intra-and extrapulmonary O2 reserves, i.e. the oxygen stores of the functional residual capacity (FRC) and the blood, will be rapidly depleted during any kind of respiratory arrest (apnea). Application of oxygen prior to iatrogenic apnea (e.g. for endotracheal intubation procedures), therefore, commonly is discussed [e.g. Miller, 1990] as the proposed measure designed to achieve an increase in the human body’s oxygen stores sufficient to avoid hypoxemia. This prophylactic application of oxygen simply has become to be termed “pre-oxygenation”, regardless of the amount of increase in the O2 stores actually achieved. A myriad of different techniques and procedures are practica…
Intracoronary application of C1 esterase inhibitor improves cardiac function and reduces myocardial necrosis in an experimental model of ischemia and…
1997
Background Myocardial injury from ischemia can be aggravated by reperfusion of the jeopardized area. The precise underlying mechanisms have not been clearly defined, but proinflammatory events, including complement activation, leukocyte adhesion, and infiltration and release of diverse mediators, probably play important roles. The present study addresses the possibility of reducing reperfusion damage by the application of C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH). Methods and Results Cardioprotection by C1-INH 20 IU/kg IC was examined in a pig model with 60 minutes of coronary occlusion, followed by 120 minutes of reperfusion. C1-INH was administered during the first 5 minutes of coronary reperfusion…
Differential contribution of dead space ventilation and low arterial pCO2 to exercise hyperpnea in patients with chronic heart failure secondary to i…
2003
In chronic heart failure (CHF), the abnormally large ventilatory response to exercise (VE/VCO(2) slope) has 2 conceptual elements: the requirement of restraining arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO(2)) from increasing (because of an increased ratio between increased physiologic dead space and tidal volume [VD/VT]) and the depression of arterial pCO(2) by further increased ventilation, which necessarily implies an important non-carbon dioxide stimulus to ventilation. We aimed to assess the contribution of these 2 factors in determining the elevated VE/VCO(2) slope in CHF. Thirty patients with CHF underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing (age 65 +/- 11 years, left ventricular e…
Experimental set up for determining the temperature-oxygen partial pressure conditions during synthesis of spinel oxide nanoparticles
1997
Abstract Nanometric spinel oxide powders, Fe 3− x M x O 4 , where M is a transition element, have been synthetized by soft chemistry. This method generally leads to a non-stoichiometric phase, Fe 3− x M x O 4+δ where δ is the deviation from stoichiometry so that further annealing at low temperatures around 450°C and low oxygen partial pressure around 10 −25 Pa given by N 2 /H 2 /H 2 O gas mixtures is required: this enables a stoichiometric compound to be obtained and a nanometric size to be maintained. The complete set up consisting of a gas mixer, a thermogravimetric apparatus and a preparative furnace is described. Some results concerning the conditions of temperature and oxygen partial p…
