Quantitative Transfer Function Approaches in Palaeoclimatic Reconstruction Using Quaternary Ostracods

2012

Abstract Quantifying (palaeo-)environmental changes is a key challenge for aquatic biological proxies, but the number of published transfer functions is increasing rapidly for the main palaeoecologically relevant groups such as diatoms and chironomids, and several transfer functions have also been developed during the past decades based on ostracod findings. The main environmental variables influencing the species assemblage composition in ostracod training sets are specific ion concentrations or ratios, salinity, water temperature and/or water depth. The available transfer functions and training sets are globally scattered, but often regionally restricted in their application. The most com…

Cross-Diffusion Driven Instability in a Predator-Prey System with Cross-Diffusion

2013

In this work we investigate the process of pattern formation induced by nonlinear diffusion in a reaction-diffusion system with Lotka-Volterra predator-prey kinetics. We show that the cross-diffusion term is responsible of the destabilizing mechanism that leads to the emergence of spatial patterns. Near marginal stability we perform a weakly nonlinear analysis to predict the amplitude and the form of the pattern, deriving the Stuart-Landau amplitude equations. Moreover, in a large portion of the subcritical zone, numerical simulations show the emergence of oscillating patterns, which cannot be predicted by the weakly nonlinear analysis. Finally when the pattern invades the domain as a trave…

Fracture Resistance of Partial Indirect Restorations Made With CAD/CAM Technology. A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

2019

Background: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the fracture resistance and survival rate of partial indirect restorations inlays, onlays, and overlays fabricated using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology from ceramics, composite resin, resin nanoceramic, or hybrid ceramic and to analyze the influence of proximal box elevation on fracture resistance. Materials and methods: This systematic review was based on guidelines proposed by the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA). An electronic search was conducted in databases US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health …

Rotationally symmetric 1-harmonic flows from D2 TO S 2: Local well-posedness and finite time blowup

2010

The 1-harmonic flow from the disk to the sphere with constant Dirichlet boundary conditions is analyzed in the case of rotational symmetry. Sufficient conditions on the initial datum are given, such that a unique classical solution exists for short times. Also, a sharp criterion on the boundary condition is identified, such that any classical solution will blow up in finite time. Finally, nongeneric examples of finite time blowup are exhibited for any boundary condition.

Multivariate Methods Based Soft Measurement for Wine Quality Evaluation

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/740754 Open Access Soft measurement is a new, developing, and promising industry technology and has been widely used in the industry nowadays. This technology plays a significant role especially in the case where some key variables are difficult to be measured by traditional measurement methods. In this paper, the quality of the wine is evaluated given the wine physicochemical indexes according to multivariate methods based soft measurement. The multivariate methods used in this paper include ordinary least squares regression (OLSR), principal c…

Partial discharge tests using CIGRE method II

2000

In this paper, the results of an experimental project on insulating material aging, performed in both Denmark and Italy, are reported. This study was concerned with partial discharge (PD) behavior at temperatures between 30 and 80/spl deg/C using CIGRE method II. The material tested was a commercial polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) which was chosen not for its good dielectric properties but rather because much of its discharge resistance data at ambient temperature is already well documented. A description is given of the theoretical and experimental methodology followed in this work. Mixed Weibull analysis techniques in terms of the PD amplitude and phase distribution characteristics were emp…

Some Theoretical Results About Stability for IMEX Schemes Applied to Hyperbolic Equations with Stiff Reaction Terms

2010

In this work we are concerned with certain numerical difficulties associated to the use of high order Implicit–Explicit Runge–Kutta (IMEX-RK) schemes in a direct discretization of balance laws with stiff source terms. We consider a simple model problem, introduced by LeVeque and Yee in [J. Comput. Phys 86 (1990)], as the basic test case to explore the ability of IMEX-RK schemes to produce and maintain non-oscillatory reaction fronts.

On the a posteriori error analysis for linear Fokker-Planck models in convection-dominated diffusion problems

2018

This work is aimed at the derivation of reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimates for convection-dominated diffusion problems motivated by a linear Fokker-Planck problem appearing in computational neuroscience. We obtain computable error bounds of the functional type for the static and time-dependent case and for different boundary conditions (mixed and pure Neumann boundary conditions). Finally, we present a set of various numerical examples including discussions on mesh adaptivity and space-time discretisation. The numerical results confirm the reliability and efficiency of the error estimates derived.

Engagement with Travel Web Sites and the Influence of Online Comparative Behaviour

2015

We propose a Web site engagement measurement, and study the influence of potential antecedents and consequences. Utilising partial least squares path modeling, we contrast a model with data obtained from respondents choosing a holiday in the Seychelles, on a Web site capable of tracing online within-page and within-site behaviour.
