Present participles in the new Gothic palimpsest

A new Gothic text has recently been discovered and it is contained in a palimpsest bifolium of the Archive of the Board of Trustees of San Petronio’s Basilica in Bologna. Two scholars of Milan, R. Bianca Finazzi and Paola Tornaghi, have studied the palimpsest. The author received their paper directly from the two colleagues, who had received word of the interest the discovery of the new Gothic text had kindled in him. Strong-Verb Paradigm Leveling in Four Germanic Languages: A Category Frequency Approach

We investigated strong-verb paradigm leveling in German, Dutch, English, and Swedish, and found significant differences in ablaut leveling and class change towards the weak conjugation. Swedish favors ablaut patterns retaining a difference between the preterite and the past participle, while German, Dutch, and English favor a common vowel for both forms. In change from the strong to the weak conjugation in Swedish, the preterite is more resistant than the past participle, while in the other languages it is the reverse. The work targets two areas of Italian morphosyntax: auxiliary selection (AS) and past participle agreement (PPA). In selecting such inflectional morphemes, learners of Italian commit frequent errors, even after a long period of constant study. We aim to enclose AS and PPA within the boundaries of NLP in order that a tool can be developed with a twofold purpose: first, it helps experts to build specific computer drills regarding AS and PPA; second, it assists self-taught learners in verifying whether their periphrastic sentences in Italian are well-turned.
