Gaia DR2 reveals a star formation burst in the disc 2-3 Gyr ago

2019

We use Gaia DR2 magnitudes, colours and parallaxes for stars with G<12 to explore a 15-dimensional space that includes simultaneously the initial mass function (IMF) and a non-parametric star formation history (SFH) for the Galactic disc. This inference is performed by combining the Besancon Galaxy Model fast approximate simulations (BGM FASt) and an approximate Bayesian computation algorithm. We find in Gaia DR2 data an imprint of a star formation burst 2-3 Gyr ago, in the Galactic thin disc domain, and a present star formation rate (SFR) of about 1 Msun. Our results show a decreasing trend of the SFR from 9-10 Gyr to 6-7 Gyr ago. This is consistent with the cosmological star formation …

Are long gamma-ray bursts biased tracers of star formation? Clues from the host galaxies of the Swift/BAT6 complete sample of LGRBs

2015

Aims: Long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) are associated with massive stars and are therefore linked to star formation. However, the conditions needed for the progenitor stars to produce LGRBs can affect the relation between the LGRB rate and star formation. By using the power of a complete LGRB sample, our long-term aim is to understand whether such a bias exists and, if it does, what its origin is. Methods: To reach our goal we use the Swift/BAT6 complete sample of LGRBs. In this first paper, we build the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the 14 z ⋆) from SED fitting. To investigate the presence of a bias in the LGRB-star formation relation we compare the stellar mass distribution of the LG…

The Gaia-ESO survey: Discovery of a spatially extended low-mass population in the Vela OB2 association

2015

The nearby (distance~350-400 pc), rich Vela OB2 association, includes $\gamma^2$ Velorum, one of the most massive binaries in the solar neighbourhood and an excellent laboratory for investigating the formation and early evolution of young clusters. Recent Gaia-ESO survey observations have led to the discovery of two kinematically distinct populations in the young (10-15 Myr) cluster immediately surrounding $\gamma^2$ Velorum. Here we analyse the results of Gaia-ESO survey observations of NGC 2547, a 35 Myr cluster located two degrees south of $\gamma^2$ Velorum. The radial velocity distribution of lithium-rich pre-main sequence stars shows a secondary population that is kinematically distin…

The Second APOKASC Catalog: The Empirical Approach

2018

We present a catalog of stellar properties for a large sample of 6676 evolved stars with APOGEE spectroscopic parameters and \textit{Kepler} asteroseismic data analyzed using five independent techniques. Our data includes evolutionary state, surface gravity, mean density, mass, radius, age, and the spectroscopic and asteroseismic measurements used to derive them. We employ a new empirical approach for combining asteroseismic measurements from different methods, calibrating the inferred stellar parameters, and estimating uncertainties. With high statistical significance, we find that asteroseismic parameters inferred from the different pipelines have systematic offsets that are not removed b…

Gamma-lactone-Functionalized antitumoral acetogenins are the most potent inhibitors of mitochondrial complex I.

2001

To study the relevance of the terminal alpha,beta-unsaturated gamma-methyl-gamma-lactone moiety of the antitumoral acetogenins of Annonaceae for potent mitochondrial complex I inhibition, we have prepared a series of semisynthetic acetogenins with modifications only in this part of the molecule, from the natural rolliniastatin-1 (1) and cherimolin-1 (2). Some of the hydroxylated derivatives (1b, 1d and 1e) in addition to two infrequent natural beta-hydroxy gamma-methyl gamma-lactone acetogenins, laherradurin (3) and itrabin (4), are more potent complex I inhibitors than any other known compounds.

Natural substances (acetogenins) from the family Annonaceae are powerful inhibitors of mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I).

1994

Natural products from the plants of the family Annonaceae, collectively called Annonaceous acetogenins, are very potent inhibitors of the NADH-ubiquinone reductase (Complex I) activity of mammalian mitochondria. The properties of five of such acetogenins are compared with those of rotenone and piericidin, classical potent inhibitors of Complex I. Rolliniastatin-1 and rolliniastatin-2 are more powerful than piericidin in terms of both their inhibitory constant and the protein-dependence of their titre in bovine submitochondrial particles. These acetogenins could be considered therefore the most potent inhibitors of mammalian Complex I. Squamocin and otivarin also have an inhibitory constant …

Bulky Surface Ligands Promote Surface Reactivities of [Ag141X12(S-Adm)40]3+ (X = Cl, Br, I) Nanoclusters: Models for Multiple-Twinned Nanoparticles

2017

Surface ligands play important roles in controlling the size and shape of metal nanoparticles and their surface properties. In this work, we demonstrate that the use of bulky thiolate ligands, along with halides, as the surface capping agent promotes the formation of plasmonic multiple-twinned Ag nanoparticles with high surface reactivities. The title nanocluster [Ag141X12(S-Adm)40]3+ (where X = Cl, Br, I; S-Adm = 1-adamantanethiolate) has a multiple-shell structure with an Ag71 core protected by a shell of Ag70X12(S-Adm)40. The Ag71 core can be considered as 20 frequency-two Ag10 tetrahedra fused together with a dislocation that resembles multiple-twinning in nanoparticles. The nanocluster…

Sterile neutrino portal to Dark Matter II: exact dark symmetry

2017

We analyze a simple extension of the Standard Model (SM) with a dark sector composed of a scalar and a fermion, both singlets under the SM gauge group but charged under a dark sector symmetry group. Sterile neutrinos, which are singlets under both groups, mediate the interactions between the dark sector and the SM particles, and generate masses for the active neutrinos via the seesaw mechanism. We explore the parameter space region where the observed Dark Matter relic abundance is determined by the annihilation into sterile neutrinos, both for fermion and scalar Dark Matter particles. The scalar Dark Matter case provides an interesting alternative to the usual Higgs portal scenario. We also…

Cosmic microwave background constraints on secret interactions among sterile neutrinos

2017

Secret contact interactions among eV sterile neutrinos, mediated by a massive gauge boson $X$ (with $M_X \ll M_W$), and characterized by a gauge coupling $g_X$, have been proposed as a mean to reconcile cosmological observations and short-baseline laboratory anomalies. We constrain this scenario using the latest Planck data on Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies, and measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). We consistently include the effect of secret interactions on cosmological perturbations, namely the increased density and pressure fluctuations in the neutrino fluid, and still find a severe tension between the secret interaction framework and cosmology. In fact, taking i…
