Spatial variation of soil magnetic susceptibility in relation to different emission sources in southern Poland

2015

Abstract The study in the area surrounding the Rybnik urban agglomeration (southern Poland) was conducted to determine the influence of various emission sources on the occurrence of local magnetic anomalies observed in the forest topsoils. For this reason field measurement of volume-specific magnetic susceptibility (κ) was conducted in forest topsoil on the area of study. The measurements were performed twice: directly on the surface and after removal of forest litter to see the influence of the litter on the magnetic signal measured on the soil surface. The maps of surface distribution of κ value revealed that magnetic anomalies were observed 2.0 km around the residential areas dominated b…

Total absorption spectroscopy of fission fragments relevant for reactor antineutrino spectra

2016

International audience; The accurate determination of reactor antineutrino spectra remains a very active research topic for which new methods of study have emerged in recent years. Indeed, following the long-recognized reactor anomaly (measured antineutrino deficit in short baseline reactor experiments when compared with spectral predictions), the three international reactor neutrino experiments Double Chooz, Daya Bay and Reno have recently demonstrated the existence of spectral distortions in their measurements with respect to the same predictions. These spectral predictions were obtained through the conversion of integral beta-energy spectra obtained at the ILL research reactor. Several s…

Total Absorption Spectroscopy of Fission Fragments Relevant for Reactor Antineutrino Spectra and Decay Heat Calculations

2015

Volume: 111 Host publication title: WONDER-2015 Host publication sub-title: 4TH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON NUCLEAR DATA EVALUATION FOR REACTOR APPLICATIONS Isbn(print): 978-2-7598-1970-6 Beta decay of fission products is at the origin of decay heat and antineutrino emission in nuclear reactors. Decay heat represents about 7% of the reactor power during operation and strongly impacts reactor safety. Reactor antineutrino detection is used in several fundamental neutrino physics experiments and it can also be used for reactor monitoring and non-proliferation purposes. Rb-92,Rb-93 are two fission products of importance in reactor antineutrino spectra and decay heat, but their beta-decay properti…

Synergistic effects of Janus particles and triblock terpolymers on toughness of immiscible polymer blends

2017

Abstract By influencing both the interfacial adhesion and the morphology, compatibilizers determine the mechanical properties of polymer blends. Here, we study the mechanical properties, in particular the fatigue crack propagation (FCP) of immiscible blends of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether)/poly(styrene- co -acrylonitrile) (PPE/SAN), compatibilized with Janus nanoparticles (JPs) and linear polystyrene- block -polybutadiene- block -poly(methyl methacrylate) (SBM) triblock terpolymers. Synergistic effects of a mixture of both compatibilizers improve the FCP behavior and reveal the important role of interface stiffness and flexibility on the mechanical properties of polymer blends. The…

Synthesis and Characterization of Monodisperse Manganese Oxide Nanoparticles−Evaluation of the Nucleation and Growth Mechanism

2009

Magnetic nanoparticles of the 3d transition metal oxides have gained enormous interest for applications in various fields such as data storage devices, catalysis, drug-delivery, and biomedical imaging. One major requirement for these applications is a narrow size distribution of the particles. We have studied the nucleation and growth mechanism for the formation of MnO nanoparticles synthesized by decomposition of a manganese oleate complex in high boiling nonpolar solvents using TEM, FT-IR, and AAS analysis. The exceptionally narrow size distribution indicates that nucleation and growth are clearly separated. This leads to a uniform growth with a very narrow size distribution on the existi…

Model for T2K indication with maximalθ23and trimaximalθ12

2011

Recently T2K experiment gives hint in favor of large reactor angle ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{13}$. Most of the models, with tribimaximal mixing at the leading order, can not reproduce such a large mixing angle since they predict typically corrections for the reactor angle of the order ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{13}\ensuremath{\sim}{\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{C}^{2}$, where ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{C}\ensuremath{\sim}0.2$. In this paper, we discuss the possibility to achieve large ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{13}$ within the T2K region with maximal atmospheric mixing angle, ${sin}^{2}{\ensuremath{\theta}}_{23}=1/2$, and trimaximal solar mixing angle, ${sin}^{2}{\ensuremath{\theta}}_{12}=1/3$, through th…

Advanced Virgo Status

2015

Abstract The detection of a gravitational wave signal in September 2015 by LIGO interferometers, announced jointly by LIGO collaboration and Virgo collaboration in February 2016, opened a new era in Astrophysics and brought to the whole community a new way to look at - or “listen” to - the Universe. In this regard, the next big step was the joint observation with at least three detectors at the same time. This configuration provides a twofold benefit: it increases the signal-to-noise ratio of the events by means of triple coincidence and allows a narrower pinpointing of GW sources, and, in turn, the search for Electromagnetic counterparts to GW signals. Advanced Virgo (AdV) is the second ge…

Recent advances on aptamer-based biosensors to detection of platelet-derived growth factor.

2018

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF-BB), a significant serum cytokine, is an important protein biomarker in diagnosis and recognition of cancer, which straightly rolled in proceeding of various cell transformations, including tumor growth and its development. Fibrosis, atherosclerosis are certain appalling diseases, which PDGF-BB is near to them. Generally, the expression amount of PDGF-BB increases in human life-threatening tumors serving as an indicator for tumor angiogenesis. Thus, identification and quantification of PDGF-BB in biomedical fields are particularly important. Affinity chromatography, immunohistochemical methods and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), conventional m…

Not just for tumor targeting: unmet medical needs and opportunities for nanomedicine.

2015

During the last 3 decades, nanomedicines have provided novel opportunities to improve the delivery of chemotherapeutics in cancer therapy effectively. However, many principles learnt from there have the potential to be transferred to other diseases. This perspective article, on the one hand, critically reflects the limitations of nanomedicines in tumor therapy and, on the other hand, provides alternative examples of nanomedicinal applications in immunotherapy, noninvasive drug deliveries across epithelial barriers and strategies to combat intra- and extra-cellular bacterial infections. Looking ahead, access to highly complex nanoparticular delivery vehicles given nowadays may allow further…
