Striving at partnership: parent–practitioner relationships in Finnish early educators' talk

2010

ABSTRACT In Finnish early childhood education and care, partnership has been introduced as a general approach in the parent–practitioner collaboration. Based on qualitative interviews with practitioners, the article studies, from a social constructionist and discourse analytic perspective, whether partnership is actualised in parent–practitioner relationship and how it is done. The results show that the ideas about parent–practitioner collaboration are not coherent. In the vertical frame the collaboration is considered as a hierarchical relationship but in the horizontal frame, which reflects the partnership approach, parallel expertise and proximity are emphasised. However, the ideal of pa…

Trust in the educational partnership narrated by parents of a child with challenging behaviour

2019

This study examined trust in educational partnership in the context of early childhood education and care (ECEC) in Finland, from the viewpoint of parents of a child with challenging behaviour. Typically, such children have difficulties in regulating their behaviour and emotions. Semi-structured interviews with 23 parents were content-analysed in a narrative framework. The analysis revealed two critical elements of trust in educational partnership: (1) Child well-being in the day care centre, and (2) a supportive parent–educator relationship and collaboration. Critical factors in the first element of trust were educators’ respectful and good-quality relationships with the child and fair and…

Local development partnership programmes in Sicily: planning cities without plans?

2005

As it is generally known, the main goal of classical town planning is to carefully plan the use of the territory and its resources in order to protect them against incompatible economic activities. Historically, in Italy, as in a number of other European countries, the legal equirement that is derived from this assumption is the acknowledgement that the physical development of cities and territories falls within the main goals of the state. The clash of interests between private, state and community calls for the creation of a set of rules standardising the use of the territory by means of town-planning instruments and laws regulating private actions in the general public interest. The safe…

The EU-Africa Trade Agreements

2021

This chapter scrutinizes the successive rounds of EU-Africa agreements and the four-tier preference system of the European Union for developing countries, with special attention to the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA). Full EPAs and interim EPAs are reviewed in terms of the resulting country configurations in Africa and their impact on the officially intended consolidation of African regional communities. The analysis concludes that the artificial EPA configurations do not correspond to any existing REC in Africa. If they last, they will have a very critical effect on Africa’s regional economic integration, all the more as they start to be emulated in other trade agreements between Afr…

The challenge of constructing regional advantages in peripheral areas: The case of marine biotechnology in Tromsø, Norway

2011

The idea of constructing regional advantage (CRA) has recently been emphasized by scholars as a new way for firms to gain competitiveness in a globalizing learning economy. The rationale behind the idea is that advantages in a regional industry can be constructed by proactive public–private partnership. This article uses, and examines the relevance of, the CRA framework in analysing the development and functioning of the marine biotechnology industry in Tromso, which is a fairly peripheral region in Norway. Despite the fact that much effort has been put into education and R&D at the University of Tromso and related research institutes, and the fact that many public policy tools have intende…

Conclusion has been drawn that experts and social partners express increasing awareness regarding the need of VET innovation. This requires continued research, especially on the interests and mo…

Le partenariat public-OSBL dans les services sociaux. Le cas espagnol

1997

The article considers the social services supply in the Spanish area of Valencia. The objective is double. First the authors analyse what describes the partnership between public sector and NPO in this area, by using a systemic conception of the social services sector where three main functions can be identified (financing, production and distribution, and regulation). Secondly they search for theoretical arguments explaining this partnership principle. This second section is mainly based on the NPO approach.

Ethical preferences for influencing superiors: A 41-society study

2009

With a 41-society sample of 9990 managers and professionals, we used hierarchical linear modeling to investigate the impact of both macro-level and micro-level predictors on subordinate influence ethics. While we found that both macro-level and micro-level predictors contributed to the model definition, we also found global agreement for a subordinate influence ethics hierarchy. Thus our findings provide evidence that developing a global model of subordinate ethics is possible, and should be based upon multiple criteria and multilevel variables.
